See, this is how far Trump and DeSantis have moved the needle on conversations about republicans. Pence isn't nothing and bland. He is terrifying and hateful. He just isn't as verbally vitriolic about those hateful policies.
Whoever all runs in the R primary doesn't really matter in the end. Both Trump and DeSantis' profiles are so big that possibly the best case scenario would be for DeSantis to win the nom, and Trump run anyway in the general as an Independent (as I've heard suggested he might do). Because Trump would massively split the conservative vote. If Trump is the nominee again, I feel pretty confident that Biden wouldn't have trouble beating him again, but I think beating DeSantis would be way harder.
In a lot of states that’s not legal, though. So he would have to concede very early in the primary season. Sore loser laws prevent someone from losing a primary and appearing on the ballot for the general with another party or independently.

This is a really dumb question but I wanted to tune TFG out last night, but...did he ever explicitly say he's running for the Republican nomination? Because he could just be doing all this for an independent run, theoretically.

He'd be stupid to not run under R, they're paying all his bills right now.

Oh, 100%. His politics are disgusting and harmful. He's a trash human being.
I just meant his on camera persona is so bland. There's no inflection in his voice, no energy. Not even a hint of excitement while pushing his new book or talking about possibly running for president. Barely cracking a smile when talking about his family. I don't know that he would draw much attention compared to big personalities like Trump or DeSantis.

I didn’t watch, so I can’t say. But since the party is paying for a ton for him I don’t think he could run not with them.
DeSantis is gonna run against him. They’re gonna eat their own, and hopefully, it rips the party to shreds.
We drove out into the more middle section of PA today and the number of Trump 2024 signs was wild. These are people that are loyal to Trump and only Trump- if he didn’t run at all then they’d happily vote for Desantis, but if Trump spends a year tearing him down, giving him shitty nicknames, making wild accusations, etc, they’re going to eat it right up and no way will they just flip their vote if Trump doesn’t win the primary. I might actually enjoy watching the whole situation implode.
I know this is so anecdotal but my mom HATED Trump during the 2016 primaries. She liked Rubio I think. But she really would rant and rave about how awful Trump was. As soon as he became the nominee, she jumped right on that train. As did all the other republicans.
My only hope is that Trump is so freaking petty he will never support anyone else and his supporters will hold on long enough to fracture the 2024 GOP vote.

Plus (at least locally) a lot of people think he’s a traitor for turning his back on TFG.
I mean, the flies like Pence- remember the one on his head during the debate?? That says something about him
And didn't the RNC say that they would stop paying his bills once he announced? Which makes me wonder why he announced so early, knowing this. I guess he expects his base to foot his bills now.
I suspect he announced simply to stop the Desantis momentum and to be able to claim "political persecution" once he's indicted.
Confession: because this board called Cory Gardner "Cory effing Gardner" aka "CFG" for so long, I have a hard remembering that TFG does not stand for him in some way.
I literally can not say his name without the "effing" in the middle.

Me too. This thoroughly confuses my husband, especially given that we live in CA and don't follow CO politics closely lol.

But why they have even been paying them two years after he left office is beyond me...... unless they money they get from donations faaaaarrrrr exceeds what they pay in his legal bills so they use him for that?? IDK. Lawyers are expensive AF.
