The National Weather Service is calling this storm a "once in a generation" event. So apparently we're not done with unprecedented times yet.
I wasn't too worried (Northern CO) until I read that our gov had activated the National Guard. Our snow totals keep fluctuating, but we're between 2-7 inches, with 50 mph wind gusts. Wind chill is anything from -25 to -50. It's supposed to hit us around 8 pm and then be extremely unpleasant until Saturday. Xmas day it's supposed to be 50.

It's crazy. My sister in MS is going to see temperatures in the teens. She's used to cold weather from growing up in NY but everyone else she knows there...nope.
We are getting rain in NYC but then the temperature plunges quickly. I already told my mother if the roads are still really really icy, Christmas Eve at her house is not happening. I don't trust not just us, but anyone else out on frozen roads. But, our temperatures will still be warmer than much of the rest of the country, so I feel lucky that disruption of our plans is our main issue.

Meanwhile in northern New England it’s going to be in the 50s on Friday. The weather has been weird. We’ve only had one significant snowstorm so far this year because it’s been too warm for snow.
H said this is the coldest feel he can recall working in over the last decade. We’ve had actual temps lower in past years, but the windchill is brutal right now. He works in a three sided building so there is some protection from the elements, but not completely. The storm is supposed to get colder as it moves east so we didn’t even get the worst of it.

We're in a blizzard warning till the wee hours of Saturday. It's supposed to be done snowing tonight by like midnight but since it's so cold the snow is so light that the wind is going to create blizzard conditions tomorrow & Friday. Seems like the weekend is just supposed to be really cold so fingers crossed.
eddy , I can't believe you haven't had a blizzard warning in 10 years considering where you live. Where I think you live, I mean (Midwest? lol).
I know! I am in the midwest, but because we are in the more southern part we avoid quite a bit. We are in some sort of vortex that always avoids the worst of worst weather.
Philly -- we're supposed to get a ton of rain tomorrow and Friday but temps in the 50s. Until Friday afternoon, when it drops to teens (wcs in the negatives) and all that water freezes + 50 mph winds. Wheeee!
We're headed to MIL's tomorrow morning so that should be ok, but everyone else is supposed to drive / fly on Friday afternoon so...yeah. Plus she loses power on the regular.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Would watching Day After Tomorrow be a little too on the nose tonight. :-)
OOOOOOOOH! I may have to find it and watch it. LOL!
DONT! it's terrible. And yet I watched it in theater in Denver during a snow storm because a friend invited me, and I took the bus because despite my Subaru this Florida girl wasn't going to drive the entire mile. Yes, I walked home because buses had already given up.
I've experienced -40 in Colorado as a child. My FIL went to college in Fairbanks so thinks that was like spring break.
Regardless the temp if it's colder than your used to it prepared for it such. And it can be dangerous. Bundle up, keep your pets and people safe. I'd send you all hot cocoa but don't want delivery drivers out either
We are projected to hit the teens and have lows below freezing four days in a row—in Florida (northwest). I have my space heater ready, a load of wood chopped, and bought wool lined socks.
I have never prepared for a storm before but did run out and pick up some supplies last night. To be fair, until last May, I lived in the city of Chicago and just always figured stores would be open and I could just walk and everything would be fine.
I keep a screenshot on my phone of the day a few years ago it was -23F ("realfeel -52) just so I can't ever really complain about the temp ever again.

Up here in the PNW, we have been having snow and cold temps for the last week. Once the weekend hits, it's non-stop rain and thunder/lightning storms. So that's what we get.

I just looked and have a screenshot from Jan 2019 of -30. Without the wind chill. I know at one point the wind chills were down to like -70. It was ridiculous. That was my very first time off work due to weather and I had been there 7 years! So, I know it can always be worse 😂

this is crazy! in just 3 minutes....
According to the NWS in Great Falls, Montana, the temperature in Dillon, located in the southwestern corner of the state, fell a staggering 26 degrees in just three minutes when the cold front passed through early Wednesday.

This feels like a recipe for power outages, which would be ROUGH in those temps. Luckily for us we just today got two cords of firewood delivered, but it's going to be a huge issue if lines start going down.
This is stressing me out big time. We drop down into the teens tomorrow night (from the 60's!) and then have 4 nights of hard freezes. If the power stays on we will be fine but we are getting wind gusts of up to 45 mph. Losing power wouldn't surprise me and if that happens then we will get a burst pipe. Again. I can't deal with the stress from this at all. I just need it to be next week. Merry Christmas.

In MN and its snowing and really cold, so nothing we haven't seen before so far. However, the blizzard warning is ominous. I don't recall seeing the stern wording in the warnings from the NWS. I went to Super Target to get a few things last night, and it was cleared out. We usually don't see empty shelves here before weather events - not to this extent. I know the holidays have something to do with it, but even the yogurt section was cleared out.

That's the day! Jan 30, 2019. It's infamous. That's the day people were throwing water in the air to watch it freeze instantly.
pixy0stix we’re the opposite - 50s (though rainy) here Thursday and Friday, 20s this weekend, but with a much lower wind chill. I’m good, we’re not going anywhere, but our utility company has already warned about the wind.

Yeah, the saving grace is we live less than an hour away and we are on the power grid of the fire station, so if we lose it, it comes on quick. People could come here in an emergency, though my house isn’t big enough for 11 people and 3 dogs 😬

We're all freaking out here in Texas because we have PTSD (I'm not even joking) from Winterpocalypse in 2021. Remember when our electrical grid failed and the governor blamed it on windmills freezing up (they didn't) rather than the issue of petroleum lines freezing (they did)? And then ERCOT promised to do something to make sure the same catastrophe didn't happen again (they've done jack shit.)
So, yeah. I'm banking on a) not having an precipitation and b) warmer temps coming on Sunday to keep me from losing my shit.

Yes, I remember that! I want to say we were of the 29th, 30th, and went in late on the 31st? Something like that. There was only one other "code red" day before then and it was the year before when I was out. I think it was only an early out though. We ended up having more in 2019. That was a weird weather year!

The PTSD is REAL. We still haven’t totally fixed all the damage from last time. Good thing the drought already killed my new plants I guess because if not they’d certainly die from the freeze.
I think my husband is about to divorce me because my anxiety is off the charts and I’m driving him crazy. I have good reason though!
We're expecting just the tail of it in Ohio, so I'm planning for high winds possibly knocking out power. Stocked up on wood today. I'm thankful DH already works from home, so we don't have to worry about him driving across the city.
