Under this article is a video story that DeSantis is floating the idea of building a state prison near Disney. I swear to the heavens if Disney scoured their security video they would find footage of this fool taking a dump outside the gates daily.
I learned recently that he got married at Disney World. Which made me laugh way more than reasonable.
REALLY?!? That definitely adds an extra dimension it.

Is it Desantis himself that was sued- he would have to pay his own legal expenses? or is this something the state will have to pay since he did this as governor?

No he was sued as a state official, not as a private person. There's actually a law preventing people from suing public officials as a private individual for their actions in office, maybe a lawyer knows the term for this. The costs of the lawsuit will be born by the state.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I can't find the article now, but I was reading about desantis wanting to create a FL specific exam as competition to sat/act. There is already an alternative called classical something or other that's big in the fundagelical homeschool crowd (remember the classical charter that objected to the david? That type). This is a fight that goes beyond AA studies, but that provided cover given the overall anti-crt bullshit.
Disney won't be building office complex in FL. Of course DeSantis says due to their poor finances, nothing to do with his hate and intolerance, of course

Way to bury the lede.
They're closing Galactic Starcruiser at the end of September! Before I got a chance to go!

We are sad about that too. We had hoped if it stayed open a while it wouldn't be like $1200 a day per person. I did see I could get a discount with my Disney Visa but it would still be like $550 each per night (we're a family of four), which is just absurd given that they require you to stay two nights.

I have no idea what this starcruiser thing is, but I think it's a little tone deaf right now to complain about not being able to visit something in Florida. People in the LGBTQ community and many immigrants can't visit or live there in peace because of fear for their safety and being taken away from family members, so I think being unable to visit something at Disney is ok. IMO nobody who cares about such things should be visiting Florida anytime soon anyway.

I don't have a lot of choice in not visiting Florida. My dad just died last month and my aging mother is too old to travel. So while yes, I would prefer her not live there, if I want my kids to see my last surviving parent and one of two grandparents they have left, then trips to Florida are in our future. And if I can spend some money at Disney so they can stick it to DeSantis while I'm there, then I will do that.

Thank you. We can no longer visit our family in Florida or even take a connecting flight there because of the bathroom ban that was just signed not to mention concerns about custody of our child having a trans parent. We “don’t have a choice” about going to Florida either if we want our child to have a relationship with my wife’s siblings and parents who cannot fly to us. I’d love for my kid to have a relationship with his family but we don’t get to do that because the state - my wife’s home state - has made it impossible to be safe there for even the length of a flight layover.
4 horrific anti LGBTQ bills were signed yesterday on international day against homophobia/etc and people are truly mad about how they are missing a ride at Disney.

Talk about two fucking Americas.
I didn't say I was truly mad.
Have some fucking perspective dude. Sad, mad, I don’t fucking care, your post and response were tone deaf and it’s offensive.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean it to come across as such. I get that it reads as such as I reflect on it. I only included my perspective on the travel because after losing my dad, I am not willing to forego a relationship with my mother. I am sorry that your family is going through this and sincerely apologize for the flippant response.

Well, this is certainly a take. I don’t know why you’d want to subject the people of Florida to only deal with super conservative asshole tourists. The governor (and his supporters) and douche bags, but the state is full of artists and musicians, small business owners, restaurants, gay bars, etc that still need patronage in order for them to survive. If someone feels safe to do so I don’t think it makes them an asshole.

We are really going to relitigate boycotts? Not today, so help me God. Equality Florida and every queer person we know in the state is begging people not to come to Florida anymore, not to spend money there, and to make it hurt for a bit because frankly that is the only currency anyone has to make change here.
You don’t have to like it but that’s what the community is asking for, and allies of the community should be paying attention to that and not concern trolling about tourism and the arts. Large scale boycott is what ended HB2 in North Carolina and let’s just say it’s painfully obvious how much has changed since 2016 in this country and not in a good way.

The state just recently decided to sanction genocide against people seeking transgender care, and you want people to visit and give the state money? Lol! Ok.
Look, living there and having to deal with the fallout even if you don't sanction it is one thing. Telling people to visit is shitty.

I didn't say anyone was an asshole, but one of the few ways we have to send a message - to government, companies, etc - is to refuse to spend our dollars supporting things that don't align with our values. I don't want the people of Florida to suffer, but in truth many of the people you mention are already suffering, and if the state starts losing a ton of money because people aren't visiting, they are going to have to rethink the policies that are causing this - which will ultimately help many of the people you list.
The article posted is about how Disney isn't expanding in Florida due to the lack of inclusion - the response to that shouldn't be "aw bummer I didn't get what I wanted from Disney in Florida". How about "good for Disney for standing up against hate, even if it means some (really unimportant) things will be lost in them doing so"
Also, good luck to the FL economy anyway with the new bill regarding immigrants. The hardest hit areas are going to be the hospitality, agricultural, and construction industries.

People are fucking scared for their lives, but sure let's encourage tourism.
My BIL’s family is in agriculture, and the new immigration laws are really damaging their business. While their employees are all documented, many of them have undocumented family members who are terrified to go to the doctor or even go to school.
And let's be perfectly fucking clear that if businesses tank because of boycotts, it's not from the people boycotting. It's from the fascist regime that is enacting laws ruining large swaths of lives that did it. So very many people are going to hurt because of FL's government.

The situation in Florida is terrifying. I have a family member who is directly affected by Florida’s shitty laws, and she doesn’t always a choice to not go there due to her job. She lived there safely for years and left in 2016, though many of her friends were not able to for one reason or another. Supporting her while she tries to figure this out (and while she continues to support her friends) is so hard (emotionally/mentally because I’m truly frightened for her and her community). I feel like the very least I can do is to not spend my money in that state.

WTF is going on in here? Could we maybe listen to the actual people on this board who are affected telling us their persepctives and not responding by reminding them that there are other, hypothetical people we could be supporting by doing the opposite? Be an ally or don't, but be honest with yourselves about it. Don't talk around us in circles and then pat yourselves on the back for using capitalism to justify doing what you want.
@rebeccawelton , so glad you're taking a stand against spending your precious tourism dollars in SF because there are too many unhoused people living there and spending them to Florida instead!
