Cherry picking what you want to believe and taking things out of context to make yourself feel better about doing nothing isn’t following the science.
We know masking greatly reduces personal risk. It’s in that link! We know disabled people are begging people to mask indoors and in medical settings so they can comfortably leave their homes and even receive needed medical care. I’m not sure why that isn’t enough to make a person care but go America!
It’s true, some kids were out of school for a few months in a some areas years ago and that totally sucked. If a kid is still struggling, I hope they can get some help. Therapy, tutoring should be available to all.
But this pesky virus just isn’t going away!
If only we could do something in 2023 while living our normal lives that both helps us as individuals and makes other people more comfortable leaving their homes and living their lives. Something that possibly might help someone—even yourself—not die or become disabled. Something you could wear would be ideal but I’m open to suggestions.
Wtf are you even talking about, cherry picking? You say you don't want to engage and then continue on like you're the only one here that still masks and are taking precautions.
I wasn’t responding to you, nor did I say any such thing.

Some kids were out of school for more than a few months. My daughter didn’t step foot in a classroom for well over 400 days. Her fourth grade teacher told me he has kids who didn’t know addition and subtraction. There is no free tutoring available for all. There is no therapy - we just got a referral for it, and the closest one with openings is 2.5 hours away without factoring in traffic. My sister and best friend are teachers and they are broken by the stress of it all and THAT is not going away.
This is an example of the exact kind of major failure of our federal government in response to Covid that I’m talking about. There is no reason why that is the situation for anyone or ever was. Biden could have stepped up and addressed these issues and never has. Instead everyone loses. Pushing it to the states then the starts to the counties and cities was a failure. It was an “unprecedented” event. He could have taken unprecedented steps to help the country he was elected to lead.
I will state my unpopular opinion. I am not a republican. I voted for Biden because he wasn’t Trump and most people I know voted the same. They didn’t vote for Biden, they voted for not Trump. And I live in a VERY blue state.. so if it’s not a Biden v. Trump election, I don’t have confidence that it’s a Biden win. (And I don’t want a Biden win. I want non geriatric extremist candidates.)

Our whole two party system is bullshit.
Is this unpopular? I think it’s truthful.
I live on a blue island in one of the three states that will apparently decide 2024. I also don’t know a single person who was excited about Biden in 2020; they were excited about not Trump. The yard signs for democratic candidates who were not Biden far outnumbered the Biden yard signs and they stayed out long past the primary.

On this forum and in my overall neighborhood? Any indication that you’re not 100% on board with the democrat agenda seems to be unpopular. There is no room for discussion or disagreement. You either agree or you’re a Trump loving republican.
FWIW, in my area, people loved masks because it was “easier to spot Trumpers.” It wasn’t about masks or protection, it was about virtue signaling.

Heard, but this is the whole fucking point of how trump got elected in the first place. the presumptive nominee “wasn’t likable” enough so she was primaried to hell, sabotaged by the goddamn FBI, and the GOP closed ranks around an unstable fascist.
Yknow who’s way fucking scarier than Orange foolius? DeSantis.
I realize I have a flair for the dramatic and might be overreacting, but this might be the last electoral process we actually have input in. The GOP has said the quiet part out loud.
We are literally battling for the soul of the nation, democracy, the great experiment, or whatever patriotic bullshit buzzwords I can throw in to wake people up.

I didn't want to say this earlier because of exactly what you said, it’s unpopular. I think his best chance at winning is if he runs against Trump again. I voted last time and made my apathetic husband vote too because I saw too many MAGA signs and it scared me even though we are a blue state. I still feel proud that I voted for Obama when I lived in a deep red state but now that I’m 13 years wiser and watching our freedoms erode, I’m disappointed that my vote will never count.
I do think if Trump isn’t it people will also vote for Biden simply as a vote against whoever is. It’s not like any nom the Republicans will put forth will be different than than Trump. They aren’t suddenly going to support some reasonable person.
And again, the core voting block of the Democratic Party consistently votes and will vote for any Democratic candidate because they know and understand the world. These are not people who are going to stay home and not vote because it’s Biden again and they don’t like him. They know no one is going to be great and you have to do what you have to do to get the least horrible option elected.

But just a few posts a go, you completely minimized the concern as basically some kids were out of school for a few months a long time ago and are fine now. And those few outliers who aren’t should get help.
Kids and their needs were completely railroaded by covid all in the act of “protecting them” when they were the least at risk population. Now those same people that are concerned because we don’t know the long term effects of covid itself are the first to completely dismiss the long term effects of isolation, shut downs, and subpar education for an extended period of time.
And if you live in a state where it was “just a few months” and your kids (if you have them) or the kids in your area are all just fine because it wasn’t a long period… it wasn’t because of democrats.
Are you saying that in areas where the pandemic was handled appropriately (or slightly appropriately) it was because of Republicans? Because if so I'd love to see some examples of that. (yes, I screwed up the quote box)

As I said, nothing was handled well by anyone, especially at the federal level. People needed support then, including @ children and they didn’t get it. They continue to need support now and aren’t getting it.
This is why as I said, the handling of Covid by Biden is an issue that is important to many people. He could have made healthy schools, children’s health and education a priority and he didn’t.
I am dreading this presidential campaign run with every fiber of my being. If this board becomes Covid rehash part billion I am quitting. If it’s already getting ugly here now it’s not a good sign for what’s to come nationally.
I am not excited for Biden. I don’t think he’s done nearly enough to protect the rights of those that aren’t straight white males. I think the concerns about his age were valid four years ago and are valid now. I am so sick of old white men. However it’s what we are getting. With him I at least have hope that laws protecting basic human rights will be enacted. So. Go Biden. I’ll try to get excited.
The other thing that The Daily mentioned yesterday was that at this point, Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee. Nobody is stepping up to challenge him, the GOP has completely left all of the state/local party leadership to the MAGA crowd, so there's very little chance that they nominate somebody besides Trump or even somebody that's moderate. The GOp just re-elected Rhonna McDaniel (Trump's appointee) to lead the RNC and there's really not much in his way of the nomination (beside his own medical issue or going to jail...)
I just can't imagine what happens if something happens to either of their health in the next 18 months, especially if it's after they've been officially nominated. Has there been anybody that's challenging Biden or will he run unopposed?
Primaries Start - Jan 22nd (Iowa) and Jan 30 (NH) for the GOP Dem 1st primary Feb 2nd (SC) RNC Convention - July 2024 DNC Convention - August 2024 2 months of campaigning between nomination and election
Can this please not turn in to an @@@ thread re: schools!
Agreed! I would have this discussion elsewhere if needed but i did not intend on turning this into an @ thread, which is why I stopped my comment above short. If someone else wants to hash it out in another designated thread, I'm willing.

They won't nominate anyone but Trump. In Michigan, the GOP lost every statewide office in a landslide, they lost solid R seats (Peter Meijer's seat for example) because they primaried him with a far right science denier and then a democrat was elected. They are still digging in on nonsense. They are physically fighting each other at GOP events:

He's done more to advance women's rights and gender equity than any past president. I wish people would do the slightest bit of research before they write off the biden administration because of optics--however I agree he is too old and wish someone else was the nominee.

Fair. Rights are eroding quickly in my state. It’s possible I’m holding Biden more accountable for that then I should be. I fully blame Abbott the most but I do think Biden has abandoned some states and wish he could do more.

Implying people who think Biden hasn’t done enough on equity issues haven’t researched or don’t know what is going on is so fucking insulting.
Maybe you’re the one who doesn’t know what is going on or you’re too in the bubble of your own issues that you are missing that other people have different experiences.

100! Like what in the actual fuck.
Yeah, not to pile on, but saying that he’s done more than past presidents is a pretty low bar.

I preaching to the choir , but I agree, some people are living with the fallout of his inaction, they are not just doing research. They are seeing their lives upended.

The major concern behind just November 2024 is how much more of a turnoff voting could become. Someone mentioned upthread about how it is always election season now. People are annoyed. Add in consistently unlikable candidates and, well, here we are. I don’t see how elections in the future won’t just be about “don’t vote for that other person.”
What? I think she’s saying that it wasn’t b/c of republicans.
I’m confused. So she’s NYC, was out of school for a significant amount of time, and the republicans there caused it?
Generally speaking the areas where schools went back to school early were not in democrat heavy areas.
Huh, I thought I was pretty clear. Schools resumed with at least a hybrid model in September 2020, and we are run by Democrats. You made a firm statement that schools reopened due to Republicans and I simply gave you an example that refuted your statement.
Now I will stop talking about schools/covid in this thread because I too am annoyed this turned into a covid thread.
