It’s not ageism to accept that being elderly during Covid makes it more likely you are going to die, know he is past the average age of death in our country, that he works a grueling job for anyone at any age and to think that maybe if you are the president, you should be thinking of your country and the people who elected you first.
Democratic Party voters don’t want him to run and we are given no other options.
You can't really just throw out the average life span as proof of anything when we're talking about a rich, active, white man. His race, economic status, and privilege make him much more likely to outlive the average American. Hell, he's probably healthier than I am. The only "bad" habit he seems to have is the ice cream.
I honestly think that the opinion article that Pixy posted hits the nail on the head. Trump is four years younger than Biden and seems to lead a a less healthy lifestyle.
Yet, talk to any Trump-er and the idea is that Biden is at death's door with Dementia while Trump is some virile soldier fighting for America.
On social media, you see A LOT of videos that have perpetuated this idea that Biden is just too frail to carry on.
Yes, humans have a max lifespan. But, Biden was old at the start of this presidency. He is a little older now. He has the best access to healthcare and could reasonably pull a Jimmy Carter and live to over 100.
This is where I think republican media sway is powerful. That singular refrain repeated over and over and over again. It is powerful. They are good at this type of manipulation.
I think what I shared raises some good points about assumptions people make about old age and about American's implicit biases in regard to age and how they don't line up with the facts. It's something to think about even if just for ourselves and our own eventual old age.
Yes, this. You can't just say "Oh the average lifespan is this." That's not how statistics work.
And like msmerymac pointed out, there are all sorts of other variables to account for as well, not the least of which is the level of access to medical care the president has.

They managed to keep Trump alive during his bought of covid, which I thought for sure would make him leave this mortal plane.

He may well live to 100! Who knows! But he is already past the average lifespan for American men and in a high risk category for Covid. The vaccinations aren’t effective against the newer strains, he doesn’t require masks or seem to mask himself. Tests aren’t accurate anymore. People infected with Covid are more likely to die in the next 18 months than people who didn’t have covid and risks of strokes, heart problems etc increase.
Being a rich white man can only take you so far. I know at least 8 well off, privileged “healthy” athletic white men half his age who have died or had a massive stroke in the last year after a bout of “mild” Covid.
He can keep rolling the dice and hoping for the best but personally I hope the party has some sort of a back up plan.
Not really. He's been vaccinated with all the recommended shots, plus he's already had covid. Your hope that he dies by covid most likely isn't going to happen.
Who said anything about hope? I literally said the opposite. In what you quoted.
We all know the current vaccination isn’t effective against the new variants and you can get Covid more than once. We also know that repeated bouts of Covid increases the risk of long Covid and other poor health outcomes by quite a bit. Having had Covid before is not a positive!

You keep moving your goalposts here, since you implied death before. LOL!
This is a weird fucking tack, as stated before.
I really don’t know what you are going on about.
It’s really tiresome and frankly strange how you keep putting words in my mouth and twisting what I say over and over again. What do you get out of it?
He is an elderly man. If he keeps getting Covid, there is a not small chance he will die or be unable to fulfill the duties of his office. That link is from over a year ago. We know a lot more now about not only deaths directly from Covid but the increased risk of other deaths and poor health outcomes after having Covid than we did then.

There is plenty of current info online.
You were the one that said "Maybe he will get sick or die. Hope they have a backup!" When I said there was no chance the Dems were going to nominate anyone else, in response to your comment that Biden should get a clue and drop out. Not sure you understand that the tone of your comment came across as callous and sarcastic and like this is what you are hoping will happen. I also don't feel that Biden is in any more danger of adverse effects to exposure to covid than anyone else who would be likely to run for office, certainly less than any Republican who isn't vaccinated.
You are weirdly all in on the take that Biden's death is imminent. Maybe take a step back, here.

I’m puzzled why you think you can tell me what to do or what I am thinking.
Biden’s age, previous bout of Covid and level of contact he has with other people puts him at a higher risk than a younger person, a person who has not had Covid before, a person who masks and/or requires other people to mask around them. The vaccine isn’t the magic solution we all hoped it was years ago.
I truly do hope they have a plan in place because I’m not seeing a viable alternative being presented. The demands of the campaign and being a president would difficult for anyone physically. It seems foolish to put our collective heads in the sand and hope for the best in this political climate. We’ve seen how that has turned out.

This is so weird. He’s vaccinated. He’s boosted. His chances of dying from Covid are extremely low. The vaccines are still effective? There are still treatments? I don’t get your points.

The back up plan while he is president is the VP… as is always the case?
Do you think they should be saying, “Hey, guys, in case something happens, here is our back up plan?” That wouldn’t be a very good campaign strategy.
I am fairly certain there is always a contingency plan they think about with every candidate…
You can’t really think they haven’t run different scenarios?

We know what happens when a president dies. I don’t think anyone is confused about that or talking about that at all.
As I said, I don’t know who the nominee would be if he can’t run again for some reason. They have not been highlighting Harris at all. No one wants him to run. I don’t see a ton of support for her. Are there alternatives? It’s a very basic, common sense question to ask during an election.
I mean Biden wasn’t my choice but he’s the nominee. I don’t think there were any great options and hope going forward there is a better succession plan.
Trust me I’m tired of old men but Covid is the least of my concerns with this election cycle.

So, you don't actually have resources that you want to post and discuss. Ok then.
I’m not sure why it is my responsibility to endlessly educate you. There are many, many sources at that link, click on any of them. You have agency. No one is keeping you in the dark against your will.

Because that's the entire purpose of this fucking board. If you don't want to participate in the accepted practices here, then why are you engaging?

I have posted many links about all of these issues for a long time now, even quite recently, that you’ve clearly ignored. It’s a waste of my time. You can Google if you are truly interested in learning anything.
I’m not sure why you think you get to dictate what I do or say.

I think Biden having post covid issues is a valid concern. I do not see him as having covid before as a positive in any way. You can get it multiple times, even if you have been vaccinated. Each time comes with an increased risk of a disability or complications. Is he more at risk for post covid issues given his age and the stress of his job and any pre-existing conditions he had? Maybe, I don't think he is any more at risk than #45. Potentially more at risk than VP Harris. Part of the problem is you don't know if you are going to be one of the people suddenly impacted by a long term complication. We have no standard for post covid testing to see if you have micro-clots or immune damage or whatever new bad thing they are warning about this week. They don't seem to be doing anything to prevent any of this either. We are just continuing to let covid spread. So the risk for re-infection remains high.
After COVID-19, experts say watch for these potential heart and brain problems www.stroke.org/en/news/2022/03/31/after-covid-19-experts-say-watch-for-these-potential-heart-and-brain-problems The possible long-term effects include "a myriad of symptoms affecting different organs," said Dr. José Biller, director of the COVID-19 neurology clinic at Loyola Medicine in Maywood, Illinois. "So, it could be the lungs, it could be cardiovascular, it could be the nervous system, it could be mental health or behavioral problems."
Estimates vary widely on how many people may be affected. Research suggests about 10% to 20% of people experience mid- or long-term issues from COVID-19, according to the World Health Organization.
Portion of the abstract We show that, beyond the first 30 d after infection, individuals with COVID-19 are at increased risk of incident cardiovascular disease spanning several categories, including cerebrovascular disorders, dysrhythmias, ischemic and non-ischemic heart disease, pericarditis, myocarditis, heart failure and thromboembolic disease. These risks and burdens were evident even among individuals who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection and increased in a graded fashion according to the care setting during the acute phase (non-hospitalized, hospitalized and admitted to intensive care). Our results provide evidence that the risk and 1-year burden of cardiovascular disease in survivors of acute COVID-19 are substantial.
The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States is unknown since our case reporting system has become unreliable and substantially undercounts cases. In England, as of the week ending March 7, 2023, 1 in 40 people is positive for COVID-19, and reinfections are frequently occurring. Fayette Klaassen, MD, et al estimate that as of November 9, 2022, 94% of the U.S. population has been infected by SARS-CoV-2, and 65% of the United States population has been infected multiple times. Between December 2, 2021, to November 9, 2022, almost twice as many reinfections as primary infections have occurred. During this period, it is estimated there have been over 200 (118-292) million cases of reinfections. Scott Burkholz, MD, et al concluded, "Our analysis suggests that a single infection from SARS-CoV-2 may not generate the protective immunity required to defend against reinfections from emerging Omicron lineages.”
One of the most concerning long-term effects of COVID-19 is immune dysfunction or hypofunction. Confirmatory research by Fei Gao, PhD, et al was reported this week and summarized in a National Institute of Health news release, which stated:
"… findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infection damages the CD8+ T cell response, an effect akin to that observed in earlier studies showing long-term damage to the immune system after infection with viruses such as hepatitis C or HIV." The authors conclude that this dysfunction causes lasting damage and may “contribute to long COVID, perhaps rendering patients unable to respond robustly to subsequent infections by SARS-CoV-2 variants or other pathogens.”
Do Repeat COVID Infections Increase the Risk of Severe Disease or Long COVID?
Many repeat infections are mild, but some studies suggest people who have been infected with COVID more than once are at a greater risk of severe disease or long COVID

Thank you for posting this! This is very clear and concise.
Hopefully this will click with those who are still in the dark, clearly the links that have been posted before haven’t for some reason.
I’d add
Compared to uninfected individuals, the likelihood of COVID-19 patients dying was up to 81 times higher in the first three weeks of infection and remained five times higher up to 18 months later.
