Overall:

Biden was weak and concerning at the beginning…just heard he had a cold…has a studder..got stronger but still very concerning.

Trump was decent and the became his normal self.

I think Biden let Trump’s responses and comments get to him versus staying on target.

But where do we go from here from a party perspective? There are no other options except to support him and do what we can unless it’s going bro be Trump for another 4 years?

If all the lies and non answers this one I think bothered me the most.

How hard would it be to just say, not even meaning it because we all know everything is a lie, yeah, treatment centers, increased enforcement of regulators. Easily obtainable narcan. It's an easy win.

But in point scoring of bullshit blame everyone but yourself for the border, sure, pivot to not answering the question even when redirected to answer "people in throes of addiction". Just answer the fucking question!

(I've read the thread now.) I'm glad I missed the beginning but am sad to hear how Biden looked in the beginning. I loved Biden's "are you fucking kidding me" looks probably because I agreed with every single one. TFG's smug smile and frown made my blood boil. I knew what he would say, how Biden would react in responding, and knew Biden could have taken the TFG-road in his response (fight fire with fire). Biden tried to appeal to the reasonable masses when maybe he should have taken a cheap shot and stopped. (The golf stuff at the end was stupidly hilarious.)

I get the frustration with Dems not having a better candidate. Biden is experienced (as a Prez), religious, not "far left", and a rare parent of a (passed) Veteran... he is likely the best to combat TFG's lies. It it not ideal, but I agree he is the best option to beat TFG.

What people forget is that the presidency is about two things (IMHO): (1) Can you represent the country and (2) Are you hiring qualified people in your administration. Biden has both while TFG has neither. But, who knows how the election will go. For the sake of our country, I hope Biden is as good and better in the next debate compared to tonight.

If you meet an undecider, convince them to vote for integrity and ethics, which is Biden. Not voting means they are supporting corruption and violence. Jan 6 was violence. Assure them there will be a fresh crop of candidates for 2028.

Focus on the issues and the what Trump brings…Will birth control be available for those who need it, will children be separated at the border and treated inhumanly, will Putin have access to all of our top secret and classified information, when his term is up and he decides to stay in the office and says he’s immune from doing otherwise..

Yes, I DO think it’s possible. Incredibly difficult? Absolutely. I sure as hell hope that SOMEONE has thought of some kind of emergency backup plan! Both candidates are at the age where anything could change in the blink of an eye. We’re naive to not acknowledge that.

In this election, I’m voting for the Administration. Biden will absolutely surround himself with good people and have good policies, and he will absolutely have my vote in November. But for me personally, in conversations I’m having in person with people whose votes are still in play (largely trying to convince them to vote instead of not choosing anyone) in my very purple area, I will not pretend to think that he’s still as sharp as he was 40 years ago and that I’m excited that he is the D candidate. However, i absolutely trust that he has good people surrounding him. I’m not in charge of D Messaging, only my own. The official party line needs to be different, obviously, but in my circle, I only hurt my own credibility if I don’t *also* acknowledge his shortfalls & that I do wish we had someone different…but that he will still get my vote in November without a bit of hesitation.And then I get a chance to explain why. If I go in preaching that he’s the best option in the history of the world, people shut down.

This bed was made when people chose him in the 2020 primaries (which I didn’t do) and the rest of us who voted him in that fall (which I did).

The only realistic way we’d have a different democrat voted in this year was if he hadn’t been able to serve his full term and Kamala was running as sitting president.

This is what it comes down to:

One of these old white men has surrounded himself with good people and has made some good decisions and some bad ones and will likely continue in this way for another four years.

The other one will erode human rights, degrade our relationships with our international partners, and end democracy.

I am not optimistic, but I hope that by November, anyone who doesn’t already realize what is at stake figures it out. No sitting this one out. We have to vote for Biden. Or else, we are fucked.

I’m honestly not even sure what the point of these debates are. At this point everyone knows who they are voting for. I don’t know what it will change.

I don’t know what everyone else is hearing in their social circles but here it’s disbelief and sadness that this is the best we could do. The tone is so different from 2020. No one is excited to vote for an old guy. I concur. I think if a younger more articulate candidate was running it would be an easy D victory. At this point it’s too late and I can’t even predict what will happen. All that gives me hope is that no one is loving Trump either. I hope we can learn this from next election cycle. What a train wreck it’s been since 2016.

Someone pointed out to me yesterday that both Clinton and Bush are STILL younger than both our current candidates. That is truly unbelievable to me. Feels like their presidencies were forever ago.

I have been pretty cynical for awhile of the dem party. I don’t think it was even Joe who necessarily insisted on running. I think he was told he needed to run. I don’t think there were any strategic talks. Just run the playbook, rinse and repeat. Unbelievably frustrating. And if Trump wins, dems get to frundraise like crazy so not all will be lost. 🙄

Anyways last night was even worse than what my cynical brain could imagine. Unacceptable that we are in this position.

I’m in Denmark. People we’ve talked to here are super worried about a Trump presidency. They are very nervous about not having US protection from Russia and they are sure the US will stop protecting them if Trump wins ☹️.

Right? Like who are these people who were going to vote for Biden, watched the debate and now are like, nahhhh.  This narrative just doesn't make sense.  If they were going to vote for Biden before they still are now.  If they say that this changed their mind, they were never going to vote for him in the first place and were looking for any reason not to.

If I thought that Biden stepping aside and throwing his full support behind Kamala would be a winning strategy I'd be all for it. I voted for her in the primary. But after seeing a recent post by Attorney Crump in support of her and the absolute vitriol in the comments, comments that are usually incredibly progressive, I don't see her as an option. The amount of - she's not black enough, she hates black people, she is only here for Asians, etc. was disgusting.

Biden has surrounded himself with solid people, made solid policy decisions and has a solid plan for moving forward. We need to vote for him and then get younger people in office going forward.

Four years is a long time in an 80+ year old's life, maybe we'll have a K. Harris presidency after all...

Didn't watch. Followed here and on twitter. Morning news recaps are pretty hohum. Biden seemed sick and fumbled his answers early on. Trump lied through the entire night. Trump "won" but does it matter?

All I can say is that I am very happy this debate was at the end of June before the 4th and the Olymipics. The news cycle will move on quickly.

I am curious to see if this actually moves people. It's really just those "independents" in a handful of states.

Could Biden overcome a crappy performance with some in-person events in those areas? I hope so.
