I've been lurking so apologizes if this was already covered. Does Vance understand that a lot of younger voters are waiting (longer) to have kids, or not having kids at all? People are having fewer kids (more 1 - 2 tops families). I'm child free by choice and medical, but the comment that politicians that were running a few years ago "had no stake in the game" because they don't have kids left a baaad taste in my mouth. I was glad to see a TV host (I forget which channel) address that with Buttigeg, but then felt horrible he had share a heart breaking story about his own journey to parenthood.
I think it comes down to not being able to comprehend of caring about something that doesn’t have a direct impact on themselves. Like why would you care if people you don’t know have an education or health care?
Because it is on the backs of those people that we made America great when they had jobs and left high school with some common sense. As much as we want to automate the world, we still need people to fix the computers and robots when they break so your stock prices stay nice and high. It's basically the circle of life.
You (as in MAGAs) can opt to not care, but then also don't complain that no one wants to work. Don't be surprised when stock prices drop because one of your favorite companies (United Health via Change Healthcare data breach, Microsoft via CrowdStrike, etc.) has a data meltdown from cutting corners. Guarantee your constituents will be MAD that stuff isn't being fixed.

I think this is it. It’s an admission that he can only grasp caring about people that he is directly connected to. Caring about someone other than direct relatives and those who can bring you power/wealth is incomprehensible to far too many people.
I love that if he steps down and Trump replaces him, the Republicans lose their dumb argument about people “not voting for” Kamala. (Except they did, of course, because she was on the ticket as VP, but facts mean nothing.) The delegates voted for a Trump/Vance ticket.
I hope people keep highlighting what a train wreck he is. Trump is a known danger, but the likelihood of him dying in office is high enough that people REALLY need to know who they’re voting for as potential future president. Vance is possibly even worse than Trump. I don’t think he has what it rams to build a cult following, though.
I truly don't mean to be insensitive, but I wondered if he was a religious nut part of a "church" (as I use that term somewhat loosely) that promotes having 800 children as "god's will" or whatever. I saw on one of the Duggard documentaries that they openly admit to having many children and putting them in to politics with the goal of eventually taking over the Gov with their policies/views etc. Sadly it sounds like this guy is on that train.
TR I didn't know he changed his name (many times). I didn't change my name when I got married so I'm a bit biased, but shouldn't a guy who promotes having children to be successful want to "keep" his (family) name as "men don't change their names"? Shouldn't the Trumpers not support that/say he's not a "real man" etc.? Obviously there's more to the story that he kept picking names to suit his political motive at that time, and that's gross.
Wikipedia says he was born Evangelical and converted to Catholicism as an adult (2019). So maybe he's influenced by that a little. He was born with his bio dad's last name. That name was changed to the last name of one of his mother's later husbands while he was still a kid. Then I stopped reading.
Ok so I somewhat take it back as my H doesn't have the same last name as the man who raised him and I think that has an emotional toll. I have another friend who changed her last name in college to be the same as her step dad/mom's name at the time. I still wouldn't put it past him though to later change his name to something that furthers his political future and that's not ok.

Yeah the first name change (or 2? Seems like they changed just his middle name and then later his last name, but whatever) is whatever, I can understand doing that. But you can’t convince me that later taking his maternal grandparents’ last name right before he wrote a book playing on his limited connection to their family in Appalachia wasn’t a calculated PR thing.
@@@ I keep seeing the justification that ‘but actually she does have kids, she has step kids’ which, I understand the point but I also feel like it is reinforcing the argument of Vance that you need a stake in the game in the form of a (step) child to care.
@@@
I’m going to push back on this a bit because while I absolutely agree that you don’t need to have children to deserve representation in this country or to have a stake in the game, it’s also true that she IS a mom.
It makes me angry on that level because both H and I have stepparents that have played a vital role in our lives and we know and love people who have adopted their children.
They’re all valid conversations. Denying parenthood is equally as enraging as the implication that you need to be a parent to have value.
And, also, we never ask men to demonstrate parenthood. That’s a part of the conversation too.
I think that’s true but using it as a “gotcha” for Vance’s statement is not how you convey the value of step parenting and is not the intent of the people responding to his statement. They are quite clearly only bringing it up to show that since she does have step children she is able to understand what is important to families/the future which reinforces Vance’s position.
A better rebuttal would be that any functional adult, much less an elected representative, should be able to understand the world beyond their own personal lives and issues. The discussion of the value of different ways of parenting and being a parent can and imo should be a separate one as bringing it up in this context only muddles the discussion and reinforces Vance’s views.
I actually do think we expect elected men to demonstrate parenthood (and marriage). That’s why we see their children front and center in election materials and mentioned in speeches and interviews. I think most people count adopted and step children in there (sorry Vance!) but when a someone doesn’t have any it is def part of the conversation about their fitness.

I don’t disagree. Shutting down the narrative that you need to be a parent is essential. But as a stepchild, I had a visceral reaction to the idea that she is not a mom. And I think that’s okay too.

And the final name change was when he took his maternal grandmother’s name. Shortly before publishing Hillbilly Elegy. And that’s the name that gets him back to Appalachian root.

@@ The GOP is really pushing the idea that everyone needs kids since they are worried about our population decrease....but not by IVF or Surrogacy of course.

They want to force women to have kids, but they don’t want to help those children in any way after they are born. The value in a woman is solely in her ability to produce kids, but they don’t care about the kids at all. It’s about the control.

But only have kids if they’re the “right” kind ie white evangelical Christians.
I think Vance would almost be worse than Trump, if that's even possible.
There are ABSOLUTELY worse candidates than Trump, who will come out if the woodwork one day unless the Republican party takes their collective head out of their ass.
Trump is hateful and stupid. Imagine hateful and smart. BAD combo!
I didn’t read the whole article, but my takeaway…A broken clock is right twice a day. They’re right on this one. Vance is the dream VP candidate for Democrats. He brings nothing different to the table. I don’t think there’s a single person in America who was on the fence before but will now vote for Trump. Pence helped him a lot because some people thought Pence would help mellow out the rhetoric. It obviously didn’t, but it gave people the false hope. Vance has nothing to offer the politically homeless who don’t identify as D or R. He’s more of the same, but with less yelling.
Not a news source but a lot of SM commentary is comparing him to Palin. Energized the base for a very short amount of time (though Palin ran the wave longer) but is going to be blamed when he crashes and burns. The amount of jokes at Vance's expense are at a peak and even though the "couch thing" isn't true enough people assume it is and will be hard to kick that rumor

I just cannot with the MAGA's and the fake news. My aunt just posted the picture where Doug was photoshopped out of a picture with him and Kamala and replaced with Epstein and I am so sick and tired of not speaking up so I did and now I'm waiting for phone calls about how I'm a terrible human.

WHATEVER. FUCK OFF.
Good for you for speaking up. I can’t stand it when blatantly false garbage goes unchallenged.

I wasn’t too worried when they picked Vance for VP because I didn’t think he’d gain many voters that weren’t already voting R, but he is the gift that keeps on giving. I don’t think they vetted him very well. There’s so much audio recording of him saying ridiculous things. He tried to walk back his cat lady comments in a new interview and said of course he doesn’t hate cats or dogs…but he didn’t say he doesn’t hate women. Instead he doubled down about who he thinks should he in charge of the country. It’s ok, we already know he hates women!
These two fuckturds are coming to MN tomorrow (saturday) night and I want to throw up. No place anywhere near the Twin Cities would host them so they are going to St Cloud, which is a good hour north of the Mpls.

Trump said this tonight to a crowd in West Palm Beach:
”You have to get out and vote. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four years, it will be fixed, it will be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore.. In four years, you won’t have to vote again.”
