Can we chat floor now? So happy for Chiles but heartbroken for the Romanian.
That was rough.
I’m aggravated they didn’t show the medal ceremony. When Simone and Jordan bowed to show their respect to Rebecca, the stunned look on Rebecca’s face, her joy when they placed the medal on her neck…it was just one of the the moments and they don’t show it in primetime? NBC dropped the ball.
Agreed!
Simone's interview on the Primetime program was so charming I almost forgave them. But, nah. They're the worst.

Aussie tv showed it thankfully. I have many complaints about how they keep dropping out, but at least the coverage is good.
The balance beam medal ceremony was super wholesome. Gold and bronze medalists posed for the "bite the medal" picture-- silver clearly had no idea what was going on but bit it anyway. I can't find a linkable video but it was adorable.
Also did you see that Suni put out a tiktok of her falling off the beam with the caption "Unfortunately I *was* chosen for the Olympic team" LOL.

There’s been a lot on social media about the power of not just watching amazing athletes WIN, but on how they act when they DON’T win. Especially the women. Athletes like Biles and Chiles bowing down to Andrade, or Suni Lee being able to find humor in her fall from the beam. Good sports (wo)man ship matters and should be celebrated just as much as winning.

The women are giving each other flowers all over the place. I freaking love it.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Certainly not Olympic level, but I remember my friendships with competitors meant so much to me in my athletic days. We were genuinely happy for each others' successes. I love when they show this among world class athletes.
So, what’s going on with Romania and this gymnastics medal? Here’s what I understand :
1. If you think an error was made in your score, you place an inquiry. You must place your inquiry before the next gymnast finishes their routine. If you were the last to go(like Jordan) you must place the inquiry 1 minute after your score is posted. You can NOT question the execution score. You can only question the difficulty score or out of bounds deductions.
2. Jordan’s routine was always designed to have a 5.9 difficulty. In qualifications and team finals, it was scored as 5.8 difficulty. Losing the .1 did not impact the overall results so they never questioned it. Especially since when they review the routine, they may find something else they missed and your score can get lowered. In the floor final, it was worth having them review the rotund to see if they missed anything.
3. Ana(4th place) started celebrating too early. Yes, the scores were posted but results were not officially finalized yet. Her coach should have told her that there was an inquiry for Jordan in place. Yes, she still would have been heartbroken but she still should have been prepared that the results could be changed so it wasn’t such a big shock when it happened. I assume the competition makes an announcement or something that an inquiry has been made so Ana’s coaches should have known that Jordan’s score was under review and results could change.
4. Now the Romanians are upset about Sabrina(5th place). Both Ana and SabrIna had tying scores but the tiebreaker went to Ana because her execution score was higher. They are now protesting the .1 deduction Sabrina received, saying she did not go out of bounds. Sabrina was the gymnast before Jordan. I believe the coaches did place an inquiry into her score at the competition but the inquiry was unsuccessful. I remember the commentators saying something about an inquiry in process and then a couple minutes later saying the inquiry was denied/unsuccessful and the results are unchanged(meaning Ana placed higher than Sabrina)
So the Romanians tried to “take” Ana’s third place and “give it” to Sabrina because they thought a mistake was made. But their inquiry failed. But now they are mad that Jordan “took” the medal from either Romanian? Jordan’s coach did the same thing as Sabrina’s. She thought there was a mistake and questioned it. Only difference was they agreed with Jordan’s coach.
It is worth noting that if Sabrina didn’t have that .1 penalty, she would have scored higher than Jordan.
Why do the synchronized swimmers all have 1 piece thong bathing suits? It's a weird combo.
The French team with the faces on the back of their swim caps was . . . I don’t even know what word to use to describe it. A combo of fascinating, disorienting, creative . . .

The athleticism of that event was really surprising to me. But the thong suits here and in water polo seem like the worst. Add it to the list of why I'll never be an Olympic contender.

I figure the one piece is for costume reasons along with the fact that you’d have less riding up than you would in a two-piece. I’m assuming that’s the reason for the thong too - I can’t imagine the discomfort of bathing suit bottoms riding up your butt as you’re doing all these moves. Might as well go full thong.

The divers too. I keep thinking about how they must all have gotten electrolysis because there's 0 visible hair and they are, um, actively exposing places where hair grows.
These Olympics have been so great. Paris really nailed it. Makes me bummed that Tokyo never had this chance given the lack of crowds.
Quincy Hall’s final 50m in the 400m was incredible. He really did run like he was being chased lol.
After watching Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone casually Sunday jog her way to a massive lead in the 400 hurdles semifinal, it was also gratifying to see the effort to achieve that sort of success on his face. 😄
