I am fascinated by the Chinese shot putter that doesn’t do the whole spinning thing-she just takes a step and launches. How?! Why doesn’t everyone do that? Or why doesn’t she spin?!
Sha'Carri Richardson just absolutely had another gear that nobody else had in that 4x100 relay. Amazing. Made me so mad for what could have been in the individual 100.

Wait, we are watching it now and she spinny spins. Unless it was someone else?

I'm sorry. I am completely obsessed with virtually every sport in the Olympics. I love curling. I love ping pong. I love the gymnastics with the twirly ribbon. I don't want to minimize anyone's passion, but I am having a lot of trouble taking breakdancing seriously. I kept getting that uncomfortable secondhand embarrassing feeling when they introduced themselves as "b-girls", and the battle format just makes me think of cheesy movie plots. ("It's a mothafucking walk off!")

I'm sorry I really wanted to like it.
I will try again with the guys.
Yeah….
I know nothing about this sport of course, but it seems like you could take any elite gymnast, train them up for a month or two, and they’d be a medalist at breaking. 🤷♀️
Oh i understand why her coach made the inquiry. I’m just confused why the Romanians are so upset and why they are asking for an appeal for Sabrina’s score. I thought you could only submit an inquiry about your difficulty score and that it literally has to happen as soon as your score is posted.
I'm pretty sure that a video was posted later in slo-mo that showed she did NOT put her heel out of bounds and, if that was the case, her score would've gotten her bronze.
From what I'm reading, you can only contest difficulty, not execution. I'm pretty sure staying in bound is under execution, but maybe it was a penalty? And they did it quite awhile after.
So, I definitely get being heartbroken about it, but it's a different situation than Chiles by their sport's rules.
I watched men’s modern pentathlon yesterday. Not just because it included fencing!! Lol I gotta say it was fascinating. One thing I noticed was no one seemed to be super anything. Like, there was no “damn he’s fast” or “man, he is GREAT.” Which I guess is the point, as it’s kind of an all around. Like even the horse jumping, they don’t bring a horse. They re shown to a paddock or horses, get to choose ones, and get 20 minutes to warm up with their new to them horse, to compete. The guy that was leading after fencing was eliminated in the horse because his horse refused 3 jumps.
So interesting tidbit, this is the last year modern pentathlon will include horse jumping. They are replacing that even with obstacle course. Like ninja warrior obstacle course. And there is a lot to contemplate here. On the one hand, it’s hard not to say “ninja warrior obstacle course? At the Olympic?!” On the other hand, if you look at the idea of modern pentathlon, it was modeled on the skills a great early 20th century military officer would need. Running, swimming, shooting, swordsmanship, and horsemanship. And 100+ years later, yeah, ok, ninja warrior does seem more like an army obstacle course and we don’t use horses in the military anymore. So maybe it makes sense. But that logic would replace fencing with… esports?
Clearly, I’ve contemplated modern pentathlon a lot. But this event was at Versailles. And they had a bit of fencing (the main ranking event was the day before). These folks got to fight a dual at Versailles! How fucking cool is that 🤣

Jordan Chiles might have to return bronze medal after CAS ruling
PARIS — Jordan Chiles might have to return her bronze medal.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Saturday that the judging panel at the women's floor exercise final improperly granted an inquiry that increased Chiles' score and moved her into bronze medal position. The Swiss-based court ruled that the appeal was submitted past the one-minute deadline for inquiries and therefore should not have been granted. As a result, it said, Chiles should have received a score of 13.666 in the event – which would've placed her fifth, just shy of the Olympic podium.

I am horrified for this poor girl. She’s gotten nothing but hateful and racist comments on her social media accounts and has deactivated. If anything Ana should be awarded bronze as well but no way should Jordan have to give her medal up. She’s innocent. What was a happy day for her has turned into a nightmare.

The whole Chiles situation is awful. I feel so bad for her. I hope they just award additional medals and do not take hers away. I do not know if that has been decided yet.
I also do not like how the Romanian federation has gone about all this.

This is really awful for Jordan, but the decision leaves it up to FIG to decide how to reallocate medals. I hope they do the right thing and allow her to maintain the bronze while upgrading the other gymnast to bronze too.
But I mean…wouldn’t they have also seen right then if the inquiry was submitted four seconds late? I’m skeptical about that part.

I do not routinely follow competitive gymnastics. I have no idea how common this 1 minute rule is or how it is worded. The whole 4 second thing seems petty to me. When does the clock on the 1 minute start? When the gymnast stops moving, when they step off the mat, something else??
4 seconds seems within an allowable margin of error.

And how far is it from where the coaches are to where the inquiry needs to be made. Is 1 minute even do-able?
I have also lost all respect for Nadia. She spent 5 days crying about how Romania got robbed. Now that she got her way she’s all oh I support all gymnasts. No you don’t. I see you. This was fueled by racism and nothing else.
What really makes me sad though was all the focus early on on mental health. There was joy. And now it’s a return to destroying mental health.
Anyways no idea what will happen but if I was Jordan I would not even entertain returning that medal.

Paul Hamm got to keep his gold medal because the appeal on behalf of the South Korean gymnast came beyond the time limit. I’m not sure of the optics if the rule isn’t uniformly applied.
But I am outraged that the judges didn’t catch that it was beyond the time limit when the appeal came in. It’s one minute to make a verbal appeal which then must be followed up with a written appeal by four minutes (I’m unclear if the four minute clock runs concurrently with or consecutively to the one minute clock).
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I am seeing things on Twitter that only the last gymnast has 1 minute for the inquiry. Everyone else has 3 or 4 minutes or until the next gymnast goes? Can anyone confirm this? If this is true then this is even more ridiculous. Why is it different for the last gymnast?

Yes, the other gymnasts have until the next gymnast finishes their routine. So yes, they have more time to submit an inquiry.
