Shallow alert: all of the women on the US gymnastics team have gorgeous skin. Like, flawless, pore-free. I know they're wearing makeup, but it can't be that heavy given that they're literally working out.
Actually Jordan suffers from cystic acne. If you look closely you can see her acne scars. And she wears a lot of make up to cover it up.
She talks about it here and how she has learned to love and embrace her skin.
I keep getting excema treatment ads featuring a gymnast (I switch tabs and mute so I honestly don't remember who). I've worn stage makeup, and I assume it's similar to that pancake nastiness. I cannot imagine the effort it takes to remove it after the event.
With floor, I'm not sure if I love or hate these orchestral versions of queen and madonna and the like. I prefer Lindsey Stirling who's always amazing and very well fitted to floor routines which I doubt she ever envisioned.
I'm of mixed thoughts about the dance-y differences between mens and womens floor. With women, it's always seemed perfunctory and weirdly interspersed. These games it's seemed more integrated and fluid. Then men it's just fuck yeah, it's tumbling. We're gymnasts, not dancers, and I respect that. But I found women's more enjoyable to watch. I'm just a confused puddle over here.
And, yeah, I'm late on my gymnastics commentary. I do occasionally sleep! Spoilers never bother me (hazard of more than 15 years of on and off living in wildly different time zones), so keep them coming because it's impossible to watch it all.
The torch did look like a giant blunt! Perhaps we can stop demonizing the whacky tobaccy which was a racist policy from the beginning. How many teams have those white billionaire tech bros sponsored? How often do they meet with the kids of today and future olympians?

OK, I just heard Britney Spears instrumental. Is this like the middle aged experience of rocking out to grocery store music? Pop tunes of our your or early adulthood are turned into muzak!

I would be livid if I was a competitor or teammate. He should be isolating. He should not be allowed to swim while positive. I see they have learned nothing.
Olympics 2024: Adam Peaty has COVID-19 after Paris silver medal
“The 29-year-old does not have to isolate from other athletes and does not have to test negative before competing again, but he will avoid making contact with others for the next few days.”
3v3 basketball… it’s like driveway basketball for a medal.
I find it fascinating just how many street games have become mainstream sports now. Skateboarding, snowboarding, breakdancing, 3v3 basketball. Heck, even beach volleyball seems far less “elite” and “snobby” versus the Olympics of my youth.
Their gymnasts seem sweet though and I felt bad for this group today, so I can’t hate them. Also, I was annoyed in 2008 and then a few years later Russia showed their cheating asses so I’m cool with China again.
China cheated in swimming and there were no ramifications. So now every time I see one of their swimmers excelling I wonder if they’re doping.
Yeah after I posted I remembered the swimming. I’ll consider the gymnasts innocent until proven guilty though…for now.

I mean, yeah they probably are. I feel like china and Russia are either doping or using some seriously unethical training practices or both.

The men's Tour de France finished on July 21, and several riders went home with COVID. Except Geraint Thomas, a Welch rider who rides for Ineos. He tested positive and STAYED IN THE RACE. What the actual fuck? The team sports director said - actual quote - "These things are like a head cold now per se but if it would progress to a point where he would be in danger, of course it doesn't make sense to start,"
No, you fucking asshole. It's not just like a head cold, and I don't care what 'precautions' you are taking, Geraint was still out riding in the Peloton, unmasked. It's not just about G - it's about all the other riders. I would have been absolutely livid if I were one of the other riders. A bunch of them are currently riding in the Olympics, so there was more on the line than just the Tour.

Watching diving. There is a team from North Korea competing and I always wonder how they feel in these competitions, being around other people whom they’ve probably been spoonfed so much propaganda about, and seeing places that are clearly unlike NK. Must be jarring for them and I’m surprised NK allows them to compete.

They're highly escorted and prevented from contact with others. I read, or maybe a news piece I saw, something about this very thing a few years ago.
It reminds me of something I was told about (former) Yugoslavia that when USSR fell they were convinced they were the leading front of tech with their 20 year old pos Soviet cars on blocks and how shocked they were when they saw what the rest of the world was driving. Now, there's a good chance that my being told this in school was also pro-us pro-capitalist propaganda as well.
Fittingly, as I'm typing this in my local, we didn't start the fire is playing which my social studies teacher made us look up all the references when it was still a billboard top. Does he still refuse to play it?

Oh man. Who remembered the Yugo? I had some friends who drove them in high school.

Yes, I remember wondering that and reading something similar when there was a North Korean pairs team at the 2018 Winter Olympics. I was really surprised when I heard that they trained in Canada and then read that they essentially had a minder everywhere they went.

BJ played it the 2 concerts I've been to in the last several years. I love that song. MH makes fun of it.
Egyptian fencer made it to the top 16 while 7 months pregnant. And my male-dominated fencing groups are all like “she should have withdrawn. That’s dangerous!” Ummm, sit down. That’s between her and her doctor. Probably the father too. But not you.
In other news, I am super happy with peacock coverage. It took some time to get use to, but the ability to see everything, especially on reply, is awesome. Obviously i appreciate it for the sport I can’t stop discussing (bless y’all for humoring me, even if you just skim over all my info dumping).
Tonight, rather than putting on the prime time stream and seeing more swimming and gymnastics. I put on a peacock channel called “Best of Paris” and *chefs kiss* it was several hours of highlights of all the things. Handball! Wow, that impressed me. Windsurfing on hoverboards 😳! Some trap shooting. Synchronized diving. I don’t even know what else was there. But just wow.

I wonder who minds the minder.
Minders most certainly have minders. Think of the fever pitch of the great leap forward where everyone was spying on everyone, even family members, to avoid them being at the receiving end of forced self recrimination and punishments. I don't think it's like that in prk, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's still a heavy culture of spies spying on spies spying on spies.

Maybe I just haven’t been looking hard enough, but I would like to see more medal ceremonies.
I've been loving the "gold zone" coverage. Definitely the "red zone" of the Olympics (even the same commentator!), but I've seen so many different sports and coverage of different countries.

Agreed! The only sport I've seen the medal ceremony for is gymnastics. Everything else, the replay ends before the ceremony. Otherwise, I do think the coverage through peacock has been excellent.
I just moved a meeting because gymnastics is not over.
And ditto the Laurie Hernandez love. She's great. She caught herself and laughed at her very surprised reaction at seeing Seth Rogan was in the audience.
