My parents are in their car, headed to west palm beach. My mom finally accepted that she could ask hotel staff for help getting my dad out of the car again and into a wheelchair.
Edit: and she did get tons of help. A hotel manager took all their stuff directly to the room, another employee helped my mom, and a hotel guest assembled the hoyer lift in the parking lot. So grateful to all of these people for being there when it mattered.
I am so glad! My mom has to transfer with a hoyer. I know it's a lot.

Checking in from the east coast. Man. We are a county south of where the hurricane warning (we’re under a watch) and we have shutters up and have prepared. There have been continual tornado warnings and tornado touch downs in our area. It’s terrifying. Buildings destroyed, the middle school where my son plays basketball is very damaged. Power off everywhere. Our power just went down. It’s bad. And we aren’t even in it.
The tornado situation on the east coast during the last hour or two has been SO BAD. I have friends in Satellite Beach & am anxiously refreshing the page until they are clear of this band.

My parents are on the west coast, and the beach cam shows it's pretty calm. Some dude is holding up a harris walz sign, and cops are clearly telling him to get off the damn beach. Idiots can be in any party! I hope it stays that way. They took some pretty heavy damage from Ian which landed during my sister's funeral out of state, and I know they don't want to relive that horrible time.

I think we’re done for a little and power is back on. The level of destruction is incredible in spots. We have never seen anything like this, through multiple hurricanes and storms. We are close enough to the hurricane warning that we fully prepared, but the county south many people didn’t put up shutters (including my parents) so they’ve got broken windows. Etc.
I am just thinking of everyone in Milton's path. I've been watching news all day and it's so scary from afar, my heart really goes out to those impacted.
The rain is so bad. We have water seeping under our floors in parts of the house (corners to outside walls). I don’t see it unless I step on it. But can hear it. Few blocks away the water is in peoples houses. This is from rain not storm surge.
I mean the wind is bad too. But the rain. So. Much. Rain.
For anyone that follows baseball the fabric roof of Tropicana field has been ripped off
Which is where linemen and other recovery workers are being housed.
Wow. That's awful. I saw photos earlier of the whole place basically lined with cots.
I'm sure it's not so simple, but I can't imagine why they'd think a fabric roof would withstand a hurricane with that force enough to make it essentially an emergency shelter. I hope no one inside was injured.

I’m listening on radio since my internet keeps going out but they said no injuries.

When I saw on the news the last few days they were setting this up as a staging area, I was so confused. I literally said to my husband that this seemed like a very risky place to stage it..between wind, flood, etc. that was anticipated and given its location in St. Pete.
The dome has never struck me as hurricane proof given that it seemed paper thin…I truly don’t understand the decision to put people there but hope everyone is safe.
Seems like a horrible decision made by the government and a waste of resources.
Edit: I haven’t seen anyone confirm the national guard or linemen had arrived and were there but this was a place they were planning to come to after the storm. Such a waste of tax payers money.

It’s so dumb. No idea what anyone was thinking. I can’t confirm anything because I’m too tired to do a good search but I’m seeing that maybe the linemen etc may be in Ocala and were to come stay at the trop after. But honestly. I could be wrong. I’m waiting for the wind to die down so I can get some sleep.
BIL is a Canadian linesman and he's been relocated from Georgia to near Miami to ride out the storm. He said the tornado damage today was vicious in his area. I'm glad he wasn't staying in the stadium. Omg. What a disaster.
Big hugs to all our Floridian posters. Stay safe and I hope you and your loved ones are ok at the end of the day.

The news clip I saw said it's teflon coated fiberglass, so not exactly fabric, but not something I'd stake lives on. I've seen first hand what happens to fiberglass boats in powerful storms, and it ain't good.
And I don't think any of us forget what happened with the superdome during katrina, and it was theoretically supposed to withstand those winds by a comfortable margin.
I hope you get good rest. The days (weeks, months) following with be exhausting.
Pieces of the translucent, Teflon-coated fiberglass roof were seen flapping in the wind. Within minutes, videos posted to social media showed the flaps growing in size until large sections of the roof were completely missing.
Earlier this week, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida announced Tropicana Field was being converted into a 10,000-person base camp “to support ongoing debris operations and post-landfall responders.”
----------- Tropicana Field’s roof was built to withstand winds of up to 115 miles per hour, according to the Ray’s media guide. Wind speeds in St. Petersburg at 10:30 p.m. were 101 m.p.h., according to forecasters.
I surprisingly have power but the neighborhood is a mess. Houses flooded etc. if you have any friends/family in the area know that cell service is limited right now so that may be why you aren’t hearing from them. I already did a quick walk around the house and besides the water under my floors (lolsob) everything else is minor from what I can tell in the dark.
At around 10pm last night my uncle in Naples said that there had been 19 confirmed tornado touchdowns, “the most in any one day period.” I feel sick over this.

I think this was the total for the storm. I know there were confirmed touchdowns as far away as Miami, Broward, and West Palm, but I'm only seeing 2 from rural Collier cty, but of course, it's still early in assessment. Last I read Naples was 30% without power.

I wonder - many stadiums have substantial concourses and locker rooms and such that could function as storm shelters (surrounded by reinforced concrete feels like a decent gauge). Are we sure they intended to have folks stay on the field? Or simply in the building?

Yes, they set up the cots on the field. I did read the people at the ballpark sheltered in the cement concourse during the storm.

My brother is in Palm Bay not far from Satellite Beach. He said it was just like a bad storm and was mild enough that his skittish dog went out to do his business in the middle of it with no stress. Hopefully your friends are well.

It will be interesting to see if there will be any accountability or lawsuits related to the stadium roof being destroyed in lower wind speeds than it was rated for.

I would be surprised if there aren't. At the very least there's going to be some forensic engineering going on to figure out what went wrong.
