Legitimate question for those who turn off lights and don't pass out candy because of your pets - how come you don't set yourself up on your porch or the like so no one has to ring/knock? Sincerely no judgement around not passing out candy I'm just curious!
We don’t get many trick or treaters and I would be sitting there by myself.

When my dog was younger hearing us talking to people still set her off and she would bark and be annoying. Also in the PNW most of the time it is rainy and cold and I don't want to sit outside and freeze. Now the dog is 15 I can walk her around the neighborhood if the weather is good and she just likes being out and about so I would rather do that than sit at home and have her bark at the door/voices.

Both kids are going to be with friends for ToTing tonight, and that's new for us. I will be dropping DS off to go with his buddy one neighborhood over, and DD will be with her friend for pizza and getting candy.
DS will be a gorilla and DD is going as girl-version Johnny Cade from The Outsiders.
I did not dress up. For some reason, I am having a hard time dressing up as anything this year.
ETA: I took a PTO day for tomorrow and I'm so excited.
It’s kind of sad when they get older. My oldest is handing out candy this year, he was going to go to a friends to TOT at 15 which is old but I wasn’t going to keep him from it, but 2 of his friends have to work. My middle is having 2 friends over instead of my cousins kids-who are also going with their own friends in their neighborhood—so that means no hustle to get a party going. I usually make a crockpot dinner for everyone and everyone stays way too late. I had also switched jobs so instead of rushing I had hours of time.
Now I’m just sitting here waiting bc all the kids got themselves dressed and it’s kind of sad that I’m entering a phase where my kids aren’t little anymore.
My kid had a Mon-Thurs school trip that ended today. The other kids teased their best friend about my kid being trans. So their friend dropped them. Which is shitty any time but has also ruined Halloween for my kid. They are lying on their bed crying and won’t even put on their costume

It wouldn't matter, either way she'd go nuts. If I'm outside and the dog is inside knowing that I'm outside, she'll bark. If the bell rings, she'll bark.
It's just best if I turn the light off and not hand out candy.

I saw a man earlier dressed as PeeWee Herman. He had the same build, coloring, haircut, the grey suit and red bow tie and pocket square and even had on blush. He was riding a red bike thru town and we were next to each other at a light. I put down my window and yelled "I know you are but what am I?" He said it back to me and did the laugh.....and now DS1 may never look at me the same. Oh well, we had a good run.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
Anyone else’s child just not really into trick or treating? DS (8) will go, but never wants to stay the full 2 hours and always mildly complains the whole time- he’s thirsty, his legs hurt, when are we done, blah blah. It makes me sad because I could absolutely walk around for 2 and enjoy the festivities - I love seeing everyone’s decorated houses and just seeing everyone in town in general - and he just isn’t that into it. 😕
We made it an hour (he was probably complaining 20 minutes in though), stopped at a brewery so he could get a soda bc he was soo thirsty and we had a quick (small) beer, then were home by 7:30.
I’ve never gotten to sit on my porch in short sleeves on Halloween night until now and I’m enjoying it.
beerlover my DD never liked trick or treating all that much. She just didn’t get the point and would get bored? She likes Halloween a lot more now that she can just do her own thing with friends. So like age 11 and up.

Yea, I’m sure it’d be more fun with another kid. Only child problems lol. We did run into a neighbor friend and went to a few houses with them for maybe 10-15 minutes, but then I felt odd like I didn’t want to follow them around all night (they were with other people too), so we eventually veered off, and that’s probably when most of the complaints started.
3 years ago our district voted to always have the day after Halloween off (they won't have Halloween off because the elementary kids have a party/parade, so I think the higher grades still do some fun activities/little teaching). It has been the BEST. This year, we have Fri., Mon. and Tues. off because most of the schools are polling places, and they didn't want the kids to just go randomly on Monday so that's an in-service day. I'm so looking forward to this little break since we don't get a fall break or many days off before now.
Clearly someone who has stepped foot in a classroom made this policy.
Seriously. As staff at an elementary school it's crazy cakes Nov 1st. The kids are bouncing off the walls and can't focus.

Four big bags of candy and we were out in just under 2 hours. It was a nice night to sit outside. MH hasn’t done candy before and was shocked at how busy it was. At one point we had a line down our walkway.
We had a really fun night ToT with our neighbors. I’ve been under the weather but was able to rally and have fun. DD was a skeleton and yelled BOO! dramatically at every house and it made me laugh all 85 times lol.
ALso it is snowing here and people are losing their absolute minds. I'm the weirdo that loves winter and snow and so I'm just rolling my eyes at all the whiners.
I wouldn’t even mind if the snow came tomorrow. It just made for a wet and cold Halloween. My kids had a blast so isn’t wasn’t too bad, but I thought we might have held onto the 60/70s we had a few days ago.
Teaching on Halloween is for the birds and tomorrow will be worse. In one of the dumbest decisions known to mankind, Monday is an in service day. WHY NOT THE FRIDAY AFTER HALLOWEEN, YOU DODOS?!
Both kids are ToTing with friends. I don’t know their plans. I assume they’ll show up at my house at some point. DH and I have plans to sit on our back stoop and give out candy and drink wine.

We made it out! It took lots of cajoling and we went to a different neighborhood so peers wouldn’t see them alone (they didn’t want to run into the ex bestie) but someone gave me a drink. And they trick or treated. And I remembered they bounce back because everyday is full of shitty, Transphobic people so that is their baseline. And I’m angry but glad they at least had a Halloween.

My dog would be barking regardless as he would hear it outside our door or at the end of the driveway (we're about a car length away from the sidewalk/street so a short drive). He'd hear my voice and be very upset that I'm just outside and he's not there (or I'm not inside).

sonrisa, I'm amazed by your child's strength and resilience, and sad that they have to have developed that already. I'm glad they rallied though.
We have annoying dogs, but we just put a table with our candy at the bottom of our driveway and keep the dogs inside with us. I think my bff and I sat outside at the table last year, but dh said the dogs were going nuts with us out there, and it was boring. So this year we stayed inside and watched a movie (Hold Your Breath, which was pretty boring unfortunately). And one of the dogs peed in dd's room because we wouldn't let them out.
I was worried a few weeks ago that last night would be a bust, but it turned out super fun. My kids wanted to have a small costume party and play games instead of going ToTing, but there was a football game (on a Thursday night when there is no school AND it's Halloween!) and they're friends with a bunch of band kids, so for awhile it seemed like there would be no one able to come.
Then we got a couple of yes-RSVPs so I said, well, if it's just a small group, I'll send them out ToTing to some of the really over-the-top decorated houses nearby (one of which is a creepy-elaborate yard walk-through), then they can come back and do games & snacks until 10. And I invited the parents that we knew, to come hang out with DH and me. We ended up with a group of 10 teens that went out, they ran into two more friends who ended up joining the group and came back with them, and two more showed up after ToTing in their own neighborhood. They played games and one kid brought his guitar and they had a great time! And we had three parents join us for drinks, food and sitting around the firepit, so that was fun for us, too.
Their costumes were fabulous. We had two Heathers, the ancient mariner & an albatross, a cowgirl, a zombie, a plague doctor and several kids (including mine) who were dressed as characters they created for Dungeons & Dragons, from extensive red body paint to homemade masks and knitted "chain mail".
I feel like this group missed several prime years of "normal" Halloween due to covid and most of them are creative-types, so they still really get a kick out of dressing up and ToTing. They went to way more houses than I thought they would and came back with quite a haul of candy.
Wallflower , our cat has been catching mice lately, too! The problem is he keeps them alive to play with. So then they are running around my house which freaks me out. Yesterday though we came home and he left one as a gift for us right inside the door and I have never been so happy to see a dead mouse, lol.
