I don't understand why if you're poor you have to be so goddamn fucking grateful about everything. Every.single.thing. someone does for you, whether it be their job or someone handing you a sack of used dirty toys, you're supposed to bend over and kiss their fucking feet. No. Fuck that.

So poor folks shouldn't be grateful? Because their poor? Or because the things they receive aren't worthy of gratefulness?

Rose Art crayons, yo
But omg, can we go back to the my kids' school for a minute? We moved out of the county so they are going elsewhere. The biggest reason I was willing to look in this county was the school uniform situation at the old school. Even after I resolved the shorts issue, I simply could not accept the extra cost of those uniforms. So once the move was settled, I wrote a decent email to the old school informing them that I was pulling my kids and why.
They sent me back one saying that they were sorry and that they didn't want cost to be a barrier, that they were doing lending closets and arranging for uniforms for lower income kids, could that persuade me to come back.
They didn't seem to understand why one wouldn't want to sign their kids up to be the local charity case if they didn't have to.
I didn't have the patience to explain how patronizing that was, the idea that I should scrimp and go without and/or allow them to hand my child one or two uniforms that would need to be washed nightly or every other night just for the privilege of attending their school. But at that point, I would have felt like, well you know, I really don't know how to explain it. Because I'm cook with handmedowns. In fact, I regularly buy used uniforms on FB from parents whose children have outgrown them. I just bought some for my daughter.

The expectation is that if you're poor, you *have* to show gratefulness for every damn thing you receive. If you don't, then you're not worthy of receiving that service. It's an unstated condition to receiving services.
I mean, yeah I think this particular woman embodies a lot of negative stereotypes and has failed at the whole responsible adult thing. But I don't think her poor choices or her nasty attitude make any broader statement about poverty or anything else. Some people just suck, whether they're this woman or David Von Sprecklesen, Evil Rich Guy TM.
This is so true. I will never understand why her nasty attitude is somehow noteworthy or indicative of her place in society while the wife of David von Sprecklesen is allowed to treat the help the way she inevitably does.
Crystal. And in taking their charity, you'd be giving up your right to complain about issues with the school (to take the situation even further).
I felt like they were saying that if I truly cared about my child's education, I'd be willing to sacrifice to afford the uniforms. The only problem with that is that I would literally be sacrificing one aspect of a lifestyle as it were that I want my kids to have for a marginally better education. Because reasonably, I would have had to give up afterschool activities.

I think that expectation is extended to all members of a civil society, not just poor people. Typically, part of being a decent human being is gratefulness for help from others. I agree that a humane society helps the helpless and this woman needs help. But Jesus Christ, she's an asshole as far I can tell.

You're not understanding, and really I can't make you understand, how much more so is put on poor people to kowtow to every damn thing someone does for them. It goes way beyond what is expected for general members of a middle class society.

Are you actively, enthusiastically and constantly grateful (outwardly) that you have a job, or food, a bed, your own clothes, money in your checking account, hell a checking account?
Maybe I'm weird, but I think everyone - regardless of their level of asshole behavior - deserves the basic necessities and those basic necessities shouldn't be tied to whether or not someone meets another person's vague, arbitrary level of gratefulness.

No I do understand, I just don't agree.
A person who says "no comment" in response to a courtroom full of people who seemed to have personally gone out of their way to help her- when given an opportunity to express gratefulness is an ass hole. She deserves necessities- absolutely. However, I think society is allowed to feel disgusted by her attitude.

Do you want to know what's worse than rose art crayons? We did a back to school drive last year and a bunch of ladies sewed drawstring backpacks. They were well intentioned, but can you imagine sending a kid to school with that instead of a regular backpack? They should have just sewed a giant P for poor on them.

I think there is something inherently shitty in doing something for someone and then showing up and sitting back waiting for someone to express thanks.
The fact that they all went to court to wait around to be appropriately thanked really, really rubs me the wrong way.

Dude. We are doing a back to school drive at work and I got into the Rose Art crayon fight this morning. Crayolas are .50 a box. Don't be a dick, spend the extra .11.
they are super shitty cheap crayons that only poor kids get. but they should be super fucking thankful to have them, even when the ownership of said crayons in a classroom of crayolas will mean their poor ass will be teased.
Signed, Poor, rose art crayon having kid
Waxy ass crayons that color traces of red in an orange crayon or blue in a yellow crayon. It's like coloring your my little pony pages with a damned candle.
and you know fucking what? crayolas are a goddamn .25 at back to school sales. rose arts are .08. so fuck you poor kids. i cant spend the extra motherfucking .17 extra cents to get decent crayons.
Sure, people should be grateful. I'm grateful for student loans that helped me go to grad school. I'm grateful for my federal gov job that will help me to both pay off my loans and to have my loans forgiven. I mean I'm probably going to have around 75k maybe more forgiven. That's a handout, maybe more an incentive to stay at my job but still. It's a big effin government perk.
But no one tells me to be grateful or that I need to say thank you or that I should be happy i at least got to take out loans at all or whatever. I AM thankful but I'm not expected to do a song and dance to prove it. And that's the difference I think. Everyone benefits from gov handouts/entitlements/perks or whatever. But only the poor are expects to really "show" their gratitude and appreciation.

And not ask for anymore. Don't forget that. You get food stamps? Good. Stay out of the damned food pantry. Your medical care is paid for. Why do you need school lunches too?
This makes me want to walk a 10 pack of crayola boxes down to the community cupboard, unsolicited. "Hey guys, I know school doesn't start for like 5-6 weeks, but here are a ton of crayons. Enjoy."
