Yeah. I don't get how they can be so passionate about giving up cable, but so meh about this.
Like the poster paying 13,000k for an "educational" trip to Cuba insisting that the costume is the "cultural dress" of Hispanic people. Don't wait for the trip to learn something!
I know the travel ban won't be immediately lifted but I'd be annoyed as hell if I just paid $13k for a trip to Cuba knowing that soon enough after yesterday's announcement, I won't have to pay anywhere near that much to travel there and could tour the country more freely.

Did you guys know that race is only an issue because people make it an issue?
So black ladies of CEP, next time you are followed around a store because you are black or you or someone you know is called the n-word, just don't make race an issue, mmmmkay?
I can't with pamela and her husband and their brush off response, people really care? Yes, and they should.
This get over it, NBD, meh attitude towards racist behavior is really appalling.
Pamela's DH is Mexican. Not sure if you knew that, but I think that's why she responded that way.
I'm Mexican-American and that serape/sombrero/borracho caricature is fucking offensive. Just because one is a member of that ethnic group doesn't make the caricature/stereotype excusable. Pamela needs to sit out on this one.
I get the feeling that, given the relatively high income and lifestyles of some people on MM, that being white, oblivious, and somewhat bootstrappy (as in "I work hard and sacrifice and that's why we're successful") is not an uncommon thing. So I'm not sure I'm surprised, especially if the people posting don't post anywhere aside from MM, you know?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but at the same time, they wonder why their board is dying and I want to yell, "IT'S BECAUSE OF SHIT LIKE THIS, YOU DUMBASSES!"
I mean, I like some of the posters. But many of them just seem to want to brag and/or make other people feel shitty for not having as much money (which they will present as just being a product of discipline and hard work).
I'm going to be completely honest and this might cause a board war but whatever:
Based on what I see, isn't it also that they just have really high incomes (because of their field of work, not *just* because of their hard work, which I'm not minimizing), so of course having a huge efund and money for travel, etc. is going to be relatively easy? And/or that they benefited from wealthy parents, inheritances, well-timed real estate purchases, etc.?
And I know not everyone there is a "big dog" anyway (ETA: in fact, they're probably in the minority but post often enough so it might seem like they're not), so I'm not speaking for the whole board but just some posters and posts I've read through the years.

It's not all of us (I know you didn't say it was). Though I do post more here than MM, and clearly I get more of my social education here.

Awww MM is was like my home board
Well thank goodness you saw the error of your ways.
Dig Ophelia THIS should your home board because you just used three of my favorite movies in your GIFs - Spaceballs, clue and bringing up baby lol
Well I do feel like I've found mah people, here!
Those are three of my favorites, too. My mom loved Katherine Hepburn, and we would watch all of her movies over and over again, and Bringing Up Baby was my favorite of them all, because big cats.

But the things that were most eyebrow-raising in the thread came from pamela, who posts on other boards and M, who is not white, so I don't really think that has anything to do with it. MM is my home board, so I am a bit protective (defensive? lol) when it comes to them, but honestly, that discussion could have happened on really any non-CEP GBCN board.
It's possible I just spend too much time on CEP. Lol. You're probably right. ML has had some pretty clueless posters before, IIRC.
What is the deal with the outright quickness to negate something as racist when [reasonable] people of color confirm that it is?
If someone of a different race or culture said XYZ is insensitive/racist, I'd listen, absorb, and not participate in that behavior and call it out when I see it.
What is with this fight to the damn death about proving something that you have little to no -- most times no -- experience with?
I think deep down its because they are defensive of things they have done.

I get being protective and while I agree that that debate could have happened on any other board, I would be interested in seeing what the reaction would have been elsewhere. Like, I read ML enough to know that there likely would be a lot of people saying what was said in the MM thread...but I also know there would be a lot of people also saying what @mx and @littlemoxie were saying and they appeared to be in the minority until the CEP Brigade joined in (I know they weren't the only ones to say it was racist but they're the posters I just know from here so I remember their posts).
In fairness to MM, there are probably a good amount of high earners on CEP and other boards, especially relatively to the general population, but the other boards exist to discuss other things. So CEP isn't likely to have polls about who has inherited money, or what other financial perks you've received via a bit of financial privilege (notably, there are a few MMers who have never purchased their own car, as they've had them handed down or purchased for them, or people who were gifted down payments on homes, or people who have parents who gift them cash every year so they can use their inheritance "now," or people who just receive really high-end gifts from family members a lot). That might be true on other boards, but their board literally exists in order to discuss finances. The closest we've come lately is talking about paying for college or having student loans.
Lol. I like the idea of using chopsticks being racist! When I eat with my Taiwanese IL's, they only go to places that don't even have forks and knives. To not be racist, my white self would have to stay home. No more eating with IL's!
Although I kinda wondering now what the board consensus would be on the Chinese wedding dress I wore. Laolao was so happy when she saw it, though, so I'm going with that being the important thing.

Your ETA is correct. We have had surveys on inheritances before, also, and most people never inherited or inherited small amounts. There are some high earners on MM, certainly more than what you'd find on most boards I'm sure, but I really do think that in terms of income, at least, the board is pretty diverse. Many people who came to MM pre-GBCN came to learn what to do and what not to do with money. When I first started reading MM, it was over 10 years ago and the frugalistas ran the show there, but as the group has aged (and then there was also the influx of the SoCal ladies--HCOL area), people have earned more and there has been a shift. At its most base level, however, MM is still really about people who want to make smart choices with money, and that really knows no income level (I say this with the full understanding that at some income levels, there is little to no choice).
I get it. I am projecting my own financial insecurities here, I think. I've been reading MM for several years too and they do have some great money tips, so I'll tip my hat to MM for that.
But then when I read about a 25-year-old posting her budget and having six figures in savings I'm just like,
Yeah. I don't get how they can be so passionate about giving up cable, but so meh about this.

But I digress.
She is wealthy beyond your wildest imaginations so don't sweat it.
It used to be mine too but then it was like FOH with your baby talk. So we made a new board. Which is hilarious because some of the vocal anti-baby talk people left for ML and/or have kids and ask baby questions on ML/MMM.
THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED at all and you know it, in regards to MMM. Le sigh.
I get so sad when I think of how vibrant MM used to be. I don't really know what to do other than post more over here.

Race talk is jarring on boards that aren't CEP because people aren't there to learn. I was once told on MMM that it was "icky" that I was "trying to make it racist " to talk about bad baby names.
*sigh* That's unfortunate.
There were many of us who didn't really care about the baby talk, but I think, more importantly, we were at a stage when we were high on sub-boards. Honestly, by the time we came over to GBCN, most of the "you better put an @ before your baby talk" shit had pretty much died down. But there were 3 sub-boards made for MM all pretty much around the same time, so I think that's what happened there. Anyway, I also don't think MM expected MMM to have money and off-topic chat, too. I have never been quiet on my thoughts about the subject--I hate that you guys left and also, I hate that there seems to be this tone of go to hell MM from MMM, because we were once all one board and as far as I knew, all got along well *shrug*.
It is so sad that is the tone and I don't understand it at all. There were three sub-boards and they were supposed to be topical - book club, makeup, and babies. I was never even for any of the sub-boards!
