What has Al Sharpton said lately that is so bad? He has seriously calmed down lately and I haven't heard him say anything side-eye worthy for a few years.
Sorry if this comes off the wrong way, but this is such bullshit. Not directed at you writing about it but the mayor's consequences.
He actually took a stand for minorities who have dealt with ALL sorts of injustices and embarrassing treatment of the police for years. Stop and Frisk was a disgusting law. Hardly affecting white people and conversely hugely affecting minorities.
He stands on the side of those who have rights and gives a voice against the horrible injustice of Eric Garner. Since the NYPD wants to run rabid and play god like they can't be touched and are free from reproach, they can say shit like this when they should be standing and supporting justice. They should say how they are against racist and violent cop behavior and that is not who they are. Instead, they're pointing at a mayor who rightfully told his son to take the right precautions in dealing with the police.
If they want to be offended at that, they're taking it out on the wrong person. The mayor didn't create racist cops and racist laws.Their leader Lynch, is being such an ass, he is being the voice and representing the force in this racist crap.
The mayors privileged son has never had to take any precautions dealing with the police. Particularly now with his private security detail. It was a ridiculous thing to say. Having Al Sharpton at his side isn't going to have anyone in NYC with any sense listening to anything he says. Referring to videotaped attacks on the police officers as 'alleged assaults' isn't going to have the police believing anything he says. Having police officers stand in line to be screamed at and spat upon isn't going to do anything to convince them he holds them with anything but contempt.
Motherfucking LEVAR BURTON, you know, the least threatening person in the world, has talked about specific ways to handle being pulled over to seem like he's not dangerous, including putting his hands up. GTFO a with that shit.
The mayors privileged son has never had to take any precautions dealing with the police. Particularly now with his private security detail. It was a ridiculous thing to say. So the mayor's son is going to spend the rest of his life driving with a My father is the mayor bumper sticker on his car?
Because even that won't fucking help him, you know. They'll just assume his black ass stole the damned thing.
And of course they are alleged assaults. If the cops were looking at tapes of civilians beating each other wholesale they would still call them alleged assaults. That's what things are until proven in a court of law, allegations.
Sorry if this comes off the wrong way, but this is such bullshit. Not directed at you writing about it but the mayor's consequences.

Wait, are you fucking kidding with the first part? Are you absolutely serious with that? You think a racist system differentiates between a privileged black kid and a poor black kid? Have you ever heard of Henry Louis Gates? Hell and no with what you said there.
as for Al, it's not the mayor's fault if racists object to the message and presence of black leaders.
finally, alleged is a word that is always used legally. For example, in the articles ttt and I posted yesterday about the punching of the kid, the officer was recorded punching the kid. But the articles said allegedly punching. It is both a journalistic and a legal use of the word.

He won't always be the mayor's son, and it isn't always be obvious that he is. It is absolutely not a ridiculous thing to say to your black son that you'll have to be cautious of how you interact with the police. We just had a thread on how the president was mistaken for the valet. I'm sure he had security detail to.
And maybe what you're forgetting, is that while police might be (justifiably) yelled at, they're still the ones with the guns and the power. Regardless if the power taken is justified or not. In the case of the NYPD and their stats on stop and frisk and the bullshit with Eric Garner, Akai Gurley, the 12 yr old kid that was punched, etc.etc. It is clear that the cops hold the whip hand over being yelled at.
I'm not forgetting anything. Their guns and power didn't seem to be an issue with people chanting for their deaths. People didn't seem afraid when they were screaming in their faces and calling them pigs. When the Mayor of New York City says nothing about assaults on police officers he loses the trust of police officers. Speaking out against violent protests does not mean that the peaceful ones have no purpose. Ignoring violent protests does nothing to gain the trust of his police force or the people of New York. Putting on a show of trying to find the people who assaulted those cops - so they could immediately be released - didn't fool anyone. I'm sure there are many who think the cops deserve it - so be it. But don't pretend the mayor has shown respect for the police officers or that their anger comes from absolutely nowhere. None of this means there aren't issues. But letting people take their anger out on individual cops in the street certainly isn't solving any problems.

The police in NY have hated DeBlasio from the get go because he didn't immediately kowtow to them unconditionally. Lynch is exploiting this horrible awful murder of two police officers to put a stick in DeBlasio's eye. If this murderer hadn't killed himself he would have been arrested, tried, convicted and likely executed. The man who killed Eric Garner walks free and is remorseless to boot.
What if this guy was simply unhinged? He shot his GF and then killed himself. Blaming this killing on the "cop protest movement" is like blaming Isis for that Australian dude who took over the chocolate shop, right? Maybe that's a bad example because Isis is horrible and the police brutality movement should not even be mentioned in the same sentence but hopefully my bigger point is made. Sometimes crazy people do crazy things under misguided pretext because they are simply crazy. And that's what this guy was.
Of course the NYPD in my life think the killing of Garner was justified but this killing is a sign that the protest movement is evil. When in reality it's just a sign that this man was evil. Just as when a cop uses unwarranted deadly force it's not a sign that "all police everywhere are corrupt" just a sign that that officer is corrupt. It's possible to have a conversation about bad actors in a profession w/out wanting to do harm to the entire profession. Is logic not taught in police academies?
This was re-posted by the NYPD family member I mentioned:
ETA: the family member herself did not write this, but she re-posted a Fox News video that included this as a caption. Not that that makes it any better.

You're delusional then. Yelling at cops calling them a pig is within their constitutional rights.
It is funny how you're calling out the people chanting for their deaths, when you've failed to call attention to the racist and abhorrent shirts saying "I can breathe" worn by the police. That is more offensive because it demonstrates that they do hold the power, and they have no remorse as to the life of Eric Garner. Instead of outing the bad cops, they're standing with them and the hate fueled murder that we've seen go unpunished.
So while you're all sensitive about the cops getting support from a mayor who is brave enough to acknowledge the injustices of the NYPD in the cases we've seen in the news as of late, and throughout recent years even, you should check yourself on comments disregarding his actions and his admonitions to his son.
Because no one here is asking what's wrong with those shirts. There is confusion about things the mayor of nyc has said or not said. People wondering why the police would be angry. Well I thought there was confusion now I see I was wrong. Carry on.

1) I still can't believe that mushmouse thinks Mayor DeBlasio's son has never had to take special precautions with police. What arrogance to just sweep away his experience as if it never happened.
2) mbcdefg...I just...oh my...good fucking Christ. All those words are English, and yet, they make no sense together. I feel so comforted that this person has a gun and a badge.

Well, the (small) silver lining to this post is that the person who actually wrote it wasn't my family member, but this lovely individual: www.facebook.com/John4Revolution (PS - get ready for some rage, because both his comments and his follower's comments are OUT THERE.)
And the family member who re-posted this nonsense is the SIL of a NYPD officer. I understand that she's fired up about all this and fearful for her BIL's safety, but I'm bummed because I really like her and I've never been offended by anything she's said or done before ... this whole situation is exposing her nutty side. Everything else this weekend has been all #BlueLivesMatter and pro-NYPD ... I'm really debating on whether or not to respond to this re-post thing, because it's just too insane to ignore. Maybe, "Lol, what a nut, thanks for the laugh!"
The primary reason this blue lives matter or whatever bullshit is pissing me off is because EVERYONE is sorry when cops die. GoFundMes are set up. The paper posts a series of sorrowful stories, lauds the officers as heros, details their lives, their selflessness, etc.
But when someone dies at the hands of the police, the response is always, welp.
That's why #blacklivesmatter is a thing and why #bluelivesmatter garners eyerolls.
Of course the NYPD in my life think the killing of Garner was justified but this killing is a sign that the protest movement is evil.
Wait, people actually think that Garner getting killed was justified?!
I could kind of "understand" if people think Mike Brown's killing was justified if they believed he really was trying to shoot the cop and was a threat, but Garner? What? It's on video...he didn't do anything threatening at all. Damn.

His son is far more likely to be stopped or searched by the police than a white child. I hate politicians. I think he acted like his kid was living in the projects getting tossed and hassled every day and his statement sounded too political and too "I'm just like you!". As a mayor he needs to be (or appear to be) on everyone's side. And if he cannot be it simply isn't the position for him.
Al Sharpton's own actions earned him the disgust of many. Remembering the things he's done does not make one a racist.

Al Sharpton speaks truth to power. So - yes - he is dangerous to a lot of people with power. He believed Towana Brawley - all it takes is one mistake for him to be marginalized and ridiculed apparently. Because liberal commenters can only be wrong once for that to happen see Stewart, Jon www.alternet.org/jon-stewart-silliest-man-fox-fck-you-seriously
and African American leaders can, God forbid, NEVER be wrong.

So if DeBlasio's son is far more likely to be stopped or searched by the police than a white kid, then why did you say this: "The mayors [sic] privileged son has never had to take any precautions dealing with the police." (Emphasis added.)
How do you know that he's NEVER had to take ANY precautions dealing with the police? You are just assuming you know what his experience has been.
As for the mayor needing to be on everyone's side, how is talking honestly about warning his son to be extra careful around the police not taking everyone's side? Everyone should know that this is the reality for young black men. The fact that he doesn't live in the projects and get hassled every day doesn't change the fact that DeBlasio had to have a conversation with his son that millions of black families have and millions of white families are completely oblivious to. I had no idea "the talk" was a thing until this board. Why? Because I didn't have to. So should DeBlasio not talk about that? If we can't even talk about it, how can it be changed?

you know this, how? My husband's family would fall under privileged and I promise you he had had to deal with the police plenty, for no reason other than his brown skin.
And if you think money and privilege automatically mean you never have to deal with being profiled because of your skin please refer yourself to the story of LAURENCE GODDAMM FISHBOURNE HAVING THE COPS CALLED ON HIM BECAUSE SOME DUMBFUCK IN A DELI THOUGHT HE WAS SHOPLIFTING.
MORPHEUS, PROBABLY THE ONLY BLACK MAN MORE IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZABLE TO FOLKS THAN MORGAN FREEMAN AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, WAS ACCUSED OF SHOPLIFTING IN A DELI. LET THAT SINK IN.
But it's not like he's in the projects getting hassled every day, so who the fuck cares, amiright?
What has Al Sharpton said lately that is so bad? He has seriously calmed down lately and I haven't heard him say anything side-eye worthy for a few years.
He actually issued a statement expressing condolences to the officers families before the mayor did.

If you think black people in the projects are the only ones getting hassled you are living in a fantasy world.
I'll just paraphrase something I read on Twitter: "Black folks saying they want to live, doesn't mean White folks or police have to die. Sadly that's how people take it" mushmouse
