and seriously. You didnt need to read the whole thread to get what it was about. the thread TITLE kind of lays it out. Certainly the OP does. So you just wanted to post about Cecil. No other threads on GBCN work for that?
She likes to be the one to break the news on things.
So likely she just saw the word "Cecil" and decided it was an appropriate place to be the town crier.
I'm going to wager that she doesn't even know who Sam DuBose is, which again brings home the disparity.

Perhaps she thought he was someone involved in the hunt, but not the actual guy who shot him? Which is still awful.
I am very sorry my comment caused offense. While generally it is possible for people to care about multiple issues, and many people in CEP do, with this specific issue, many people on social media and elsewhere show only care for a lion and no care for the countless and senseless deaths of black men and women at the hands of the police. And I can totally see how that apparent hypocrisy would be incredibly upsetting and frustrating. Again, I am very sorry. I was out of the thread and just seeing this all now.
*head tilt* A man is dead, killed during a traffic stop, and people in this thread are upset about that and the lack of response from the world at large about his death vs. the outrage over the death of this lion and you post your first comment and now this. OK.
Perhaps she thought he was someone involved in the hunt, but not the actual guy who shot him? Which is still awful.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh yes, I could see that being the case.
I think she's Canadian. I don't know what the media there has shared with regard to Sam DuBose, or any of the myriad other black men and women killed by the police here in the States.
HOWEVER, that is no excuse for the level of tone deafness and ignorance she displayed here, ESPECIALLY when she was called out and posted a gross gif that only further served to illustrate her complete lack of respect and racial awareness.
nursewife - you really should apologize. You were fucking gross here.

And the dialogue from the other officer's body camera videos is also really disturbing. Tensing starts to say that he was being dragged and the other cop tells him not to say anything else. Gross.
For those worried about political stuff impacting employment--are your FB pages not completely locked down from public view? I get it, nothing is safe on the internet, but it would take some commitment for a potential employer to find somebody who knows you in real life and have them stalk your page.
I'm not saying, "YOU MUST START GETTING PUBLICLY POLITICAL NOW!", but I'm just wondering how big of a deal this actually is.
TBF, I post on FB, a lot. But I don't for a second fool myself into thinking it's "private." I'm a SAHM, so I have the luxury of not worrying about job fallout. I do worry about it affecting DH'S job, so when I post, I make sure I use phrasing that wouldn't cause issues if it were connected to him.
nursewife is the type of poster that makes you feel hella squicky posting on other boards *cough cough makeup cough*. It's why I took a break from S&B. I really don't want to know sometimes the crazy and awful in people over some OOTDs and FOTDs.

Outside of the other foolishness above - I want to highlight this.
This is why folks don't believe the police when they say they were justified. Without the video, he would have been believed and it would have been case closed. I'm going to HOPE the other officer was like "You should probably shut up" as a way for him not to be involved in fuckery or knowing that all this shit was on the body camera and was like "You know you done messed up."
After seeing the video and then listening to Tensing lie and say he was being drug by a car, I thought about how even with the Walter Scott video, the filmer read the police report and was like this right here is a bold-faced LIE.
You can't do this and expect a community to believe you or not paint you in a bad light. Cops can't run around doing shit like this because it taints the justice system. You can't enforce the law if you, yourself engage in lawless behavior.

I have no qualms about taking this shit to the makeup board. But I'm an asshole like that! Be forewarned, nursewife. Own your foolery, apologize the right way, act right, and listen when grown folks are talking.

Yes, mine is. I rarely get political on it though.
I do fear retribution/consequences from my current employer. We have social media policies, and I'm friends with colleagues and some students. If I have these conversations (and I do), I prefer it be in person where we can discuss, and not where something I say can potentially be taken out of context and used against me.
Look I can understand not reading the whole thread. But at least read the first post, for gods sake!
RIGHT. Or preface that shit. I typically say "I haven't read all the replies..." Mainly because I'm sure I missed something that was covered. LAWD. Chile. Just LAWD.
I think the irony of her posts is that they are perfect examples of how we white people say/do shit that seems innocent enough to us, without in anyway even beginning to contemplate how they are representative of our ignorance. I am sure she didn't INTEND to walk into this thread and post something that essentially proved the point of the OP, but the fact that she didn't even bother to read (which I have TOTALLY done too), kind of speaks to the mentality that it doesn't matter, whatever I have to say is important/appropriate/meaningful. And then, to top it off, posting a gif that involves African dancing...I mean, that just make it so, so much worse.
I would also like to say that I have read the whole thread (though I've had to come back to it a few times, a few hours after things were posted) and I really, really appreciate it. So if you haven't noticed my "likes," you can consider taking me off the spreadsheet, or at least putting an asterisk next to me.

No, no, no. I'm not claiming her or anything that has to do with her/ involves her. No. There is ignorance then there is what she did.

Nah, I can't even give her that benefit of the doubt. That was willfully ignorant, combined with a completely dismissive attitude. I could find other examples of people saying stuff that represents a lack of intention. The whole thing shows that she just DGAF.

YES. For all of the "people I know only post about babies and kittens" or "I don't do political" - that just means your posts have a better chance of getting someone's attention. Shifting or starting a dialogue. Or be ALL THE MORE relevant.
ETA: thanks, folks, for weighing in on the work issue. I do see that, given screen shots, etc, it could be dicey. But I also feel like for those who have the luxury of using the social media platform, comfortably and respectably - to not do so, particularly when your community has tuned out any unpleasantries such as black people getting murdered by police - is a wasted opportunity.
I have colleagues who I am friends with. I try to remember that anything I put on FB I should be comfortable putting on a billboard. And I'm OK with speaking up about travesties such as this.

There was nothing, to me, innocent about her post. It was willfully obtuse, ignorant, and insulting.

Really, her first post? Her second post, for sure. But her first one? I think it was obtuse, ignorant and insulting but I don't know if it was willfully so...she admitted to not reading the OP, just blindly posting. I don't think she was meaning to be rude, but that was kind of my point...we say stupid shit because we don't BOTHER to read. Or maybe I am wrong, I am open to being wrong. Maybe part of my white privilege is that I am too ready to presume people's intentions are good, or rather, not wrong. That's entirely possible.
If I just started a shitstorm with my post, please know that my silence from this point on is only because I am getting in my car to drive somewhere, not because I am hiding.

Yeah. When someone responds to you with "Did you even read the thread??" the appropriate thing to do is apologize and, well, read the damn thread. Not post a dismissive gif.
I don't have facebook, and don't watch the news, so I originally heard of both Mr. Dubose and Cecil in threads here. I find it so hard to stomach the coverage that I have seen since online. That people value an animal's life over that of a human being's any day is appalling to me. That anyone would continue to defend the monster that killed Sam Dubose in cold blood after watching that video is absolutely enraging. The fact that the two missing white teens in FL have raised $289,796 in 3 days (2,538 people) versus Mr. Dubose's GFM total of $5480 in 10 days (147 people, of which I am one of) also speaks VOLUMES of just how little this country values black lives and how little we've progressed. My heart hurts and I'm angry.
