sfy shall I describe to you a conversation I had today with my language instructor talking about how black people generally are poor and aren't educated enough?
Gah. I wanted the floor to swallow me.
Truly I dont think he intended offense. I think he likely views it as a statement of fact that in general the are more barriers to education and wealth accumulation for poc. Like when they ask me to describe my instructor they expect me to literally say yellow skin and Asian eyes, and I'm trying to describe her mannerisms or education. But, damn, awkward (understatement)
I think I'm going to take a pass. I think it's the black people generally that is bothering me here. It's different to say there are higher percentages of black people in poverty and without advanced degrees than it is to say it the way he phrased it, you know? I know that some people are annoyed about having to be what they perceive as "overly PC," but the right wording can go a long way in engaging someone in a productive conversation. Sounds awkward, indeed!
I hate using this 'excuse' as it's pretty cliche. I tried to GBCN while I was trying to get some e-mails and forms e-mailed while having my twins bouncing around wanting to go swim. Lesson learned. Don't glance and post.
Why would you respond with a gif at all after people's reaction to your first post? I mean, there you are just sooo busy checking the forum on the go yet you managed to offend and blow off people with trivial, insensitive gif that you'd have to...oh, I don't know, look up, review, get the url, copy it, paste it into the response, make sure you've coded it properly, then hit submit.
Sounds like more work than quick reply (like, you know, the freaking "quick reply" box), "wow, so sorry, didn't read the thread and realize."
I.e., I think you're full of it.
I didn't read. I seriously just thought it was 'why the hell is she posting about lions in a post about people' reaction since all I really took the time to read was a WTF. Any other day when I actually read stuff, this wouldn't have happened.
eta- I know I suck. I obviously deeply regret not actually paying attention and READING.

Well, he did say it in his native language, not English, so it was likely very simplified for my benefit

DA HELL YOU SAY. LAWD.
Please, do share with the class.
For the record, I do recall a while back that black, educated folks weren't really black. So, maybe this was his thought process?
Also, just in case anyone is tempted to let this thread wind down, can we first please have at least three more people say completely insensitive and/or idiotic things and then follow up with weak and/or insane apologies? Not all of us have Friday night plans, am I right? Thanks, CEP!
I'm not going to say anything insensitive, but I'd be happy to share the story of my co-worker telling a job candidate we don't have many black students in our major because black people can't get good grades.

Wanted. To. Die.
Welp. Your coworker just trumped my coworker who asked a Nigerian client what was up with those email scams . Did you address this?
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
I appreciate your apology. I'm not going to lie, I will probably be more aware of you and what you post for a while. And you'll probably be on some folks' spreadsheets.
This thread has almost been enough to make me start a spreadsheet. Dang dang dang!

OMG! My BIL would have a heyday with this joker. I can hear his Yoruba accent getting hyped up in conversation. lol.
Moving forward, I think I may forever address her in my mind as "this joker." I wish your BIL had been on the other end of that conversation, because until I went in her office, I don't think she'd gotten any push back at all.

Did you report your coworker to HR?
Gosh, yes. After I spent the rest of the day apologizing to the candidate.
I'm sure you won't be shocked to know a) co-worker was fired and b) candidate did not accept our job offer.
I saw this while on vacation and was trying to figure out who the hell Cecil was/why people were comparing Samuel DuBose to Cecil B Demille. I had no idea the lion had a name...living under a vacation rock ::heading back to bed:: I need to catch up on this thread tomorrow, but once I realized it was a good thread to read/listen to, I wanted to post to be sure I posted.
I don't typically post in racial threads as I feel that I don't have anything meaningful to contribute. But I do read all of them and, especially in this thread, feel enlightened and glad these discussions are taking place. I grew up in a very white city so I really have learned so much from CEP. I treat these threads as a learning opportunity.
As for posting on FB, I tend to stay away from political posts and usually only post pictures or personal updates for family. I save the political posts for Twitter.
