Am I the only one thinking that I would not go to the media over this? I really wouldn't want to subject my child to being the kid on the news that shit his pants.
This was my thought too. Take it to the school board, fine. But calling the news and putting it on facebook...no. That's just more embarrassment for the kid.
Then again I don't have kids so I keep my opinions about that kind of stuff to myself.

I did think about that, however, this policy is not only stupid, it is medically harmful to students to withhold reasonable bathroom accomodations. Sometimes, you have to make noise, to get things changed.
OP can let news outlets know that they don't want them to use her name/picture/kids name, etc. Once they get wind of the story, they can do their own investigation and really, not even mention the OPs name.
The policy needs to change ASAP. The district does not want to get sued like the district in the article dowagercountess posted. I'm not saying the OP should sue, but prolonged bathroom denial can and has caused serious medical issues.
That article was horrifying, and my heart breaks for the 12yo that has anal leakage and has to go to physical her apt to relearn how to control her vowels, due to the school's now reversed asinine policy.
I agree that the policy is medically harmful, I'm just not willing to put my child on the news over it. I would absolutely escalate and fight it, though.
I teach 8th grade and I always grant permission if asked a 2nd time. Because they're older, I'll often give them the option of taking basically a "strike" for it.. (3 in a day=detention) but they have passing periods where they can use the restroom for 5 minutes EVERY HOUR.. so it takes pretty bad lack of planning to OMG HAVE TO GO during class.. and USUALLY I DON'T EVEN ACTUALLY GIVE THEM THE STRIKE.. because if they were willing to take it, they obviously actually have to go. (I just ask that to serve as a deterrent for the kids who just want to go fix their makeup/meet a friend from another class!)
Gah, I'm so mad at the idea of just flat out denying someone the opportunity to use the restroom. It's inhumane.
I'm glad you usually don't give strikes.
To the bolded, I have no idea how big your school is, but when I was in Jr. High my schedule frequently had to haul it from one side of the school to the other, stop at my locker during only the appointed passing periods, wade through a horde of students, etc. It was all I could do to get to the next class in time. Tieing up at least three of those minutes going to the bathroom would have made me late. Maybe your students can do more in five minutes than I could :-)
I had one teacher in HS who tried to ban people going to the bathroom "on her time." My mother told me in no uncertain terms she was uninterested in me getting a UTI so that some English teacher with an axe to grind could prove her point. If I really needed to go, I was to go, and she'd deal with the school.

Our local news would be all over this with no more then an anonymous tip that 6 yr olds are only allowed to use the bathroom 3 times a day. I wouldn't need to say anything about my kid just the policy and how it's being enforced. They'd do an expose in a heartbeat without needing to mention my kid or her accident.

This. Also, I think she school board meetings are public, so once it's brought to the attention of the board, it's likely it will be addressed there, and the story would get legs. The OP or other parents who complained wouldn't even have to be mentioned, I would think.

I've seen a million stories on the news where they ABSOLUTELY protect the identity of the people, especially when they are minors. I'm not sure why people feel the OPs kid would be plastered all over the news!
Dude, I know this thread has peaked but wtf? No more than 3X a day? I just graduated from boot camp and the instructors could not deny us if we needed to use the bathroom.
IN BOOT CAMP.
I can't imagine requiring small children to adhere to that schedule.
It's against a persons BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS to deny the use of a restroom. How the fuck is this school district getting away with this?
I once had a behaviorist and an OT tell me that a client could use the restroom whenever she wanted but we did not have to provide her choice of restrooms and that she had to use the restroom closest to her at the time ( so that she couldn't talk to her BF during programming)
The Human Rights committee shot that shit down real real fast. Not only could she use the restroom whenever she could use any damn restroom in the place. Period.

ITA - 5 minutes was not nearly long enough to do all of that and if you had to do more than pee, OMG, just forget it. I would like to see a teacher accomplish all of this (stopping at locker, changing books, going to the other side of the school, wading through the horde (yes, exactly!), using the bathroom, and making it to his/her next class.
In my highschool, we got 3 minutes between classes. 180 seconds. I mean, why bother?
Luckily only one teacher was a pain about letting us go during class. A female teacher no less. This was a 90 minute class (home ec) and one day, I'd had enough of squirming in silence. After whispering to her I needed to use the restroom and, of course, her denying me, future lawyer me piped up (loudly) that I was going anyway and that my next stop would be the principal's office to explain that I was exercising my right to a basic bodily function. Yeah, that was the last time she denied a pass.
Did not actually have to go to the superintendent's office, but spoke with him on the phone. He is ripshit mad as well. This "policy" does not exist. At all. He had no idea what I was talking about. He is taking the matter VERY seriously and my kiddo and others will be allowed to use the restrooms when they need to go. Period.
Edit: So the teacher and principal are liars. Which makes me even more pissed.

WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK?!?!?!?!??
So both the teacher and the principal are sadistic assholes?!?!

Wtf? Omg thank god you talked to him and he's taking this seriously!
I also have the doctor's note and I had them put "access to the NEAREST facility". If they don't comply it will be medical neglect. So they can't make him go all the way to the office to poop.

As sadistically evil as it is, I want to withhold bathroom rights from these MutherF'rs until they shit their pants. ARRRGH!!!!!!! So glad the superintendent understands the grave nature of this situation; praying he sets these bitchfaces in their place STAT! ETA: ditto @beachgal

The fact that you even have to give these assholes a doctors note is such bullshit though. What a bunch of lying d-bags. I am so sorry for you and your son. These people need to be fired.

I'm even more pissed off now than I was yesterday. I'm so glad the superintendent is taking this seriously and as angry as you are.
Is it wrong of me to say that I would send an email to the superintendent thanking him for talking with you regarding the incident with your son and for his shared concern while ccing the teacher principal?
omfg to that update. I'm glad there's no policy, but who the hell makes up something so awful? I hope the teacher and principal are in big, big trouble. If this were me, I think I would also consider having my DS moved to another classroom. His current teacher is a terrible person.
