And I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m shutting it down. I guess I’ll say, please tell me why the hidden leia baby theory makes sense without saying “but the original didn’t make sense either”. That’s not an argument in my book, because again, none of that was planned from the start.
Man, you are seriously against this. I'd like to point out it was my kid who thought it. I said upthread that I didn't buy it, I just liked it. Goodness. People are allowed to have ridiculous theories about fictional universes. Especially people who aren't experts. What you're doing here is the equivalent of me telling my students there's only one way to think about characters in the novels they read, and it's my way because I've read the book ten times. I think it's fine to have fun with stories and characters and all the ways they can exist in our imaginations.
Point taken, but if your students tried to tell me that Daisy was crying over Gatsby’s shirts because she just realized Gatsby was her secret stolen baby, I would also shut that down. I will drop it. I am a fervent arguer but I release all future annoyance at this topic. Released.
Yes! DH and I watched it Thursday night and I didn’t notice, but DH took DS to see it last night and DS caught it (and said it was one of his favorite parts).
I suspect there’s more to the story of Rey’s parents than what Kylo told her. The movies revolve around the Skywalker family and DH thinks they are trying to get away from that but I still think there is some sort of connection. Either is possible and the little boy leans towards the theory that there are lots of future jedi in the universe unrelated to the skywalkers and the stories they hear of the rebels are keeping their hope alive. So many rebels and Jedi have died throughout the movies but the storyline always hinges on the skywalker bloodline.
I don’t care what anyone says, I love Poe. I also appreciated the characters showing poor judgement and the consequences, with the women’s being the heroes. There’s more depth in the characters, some more than others, and there was still a lot of campy humor.
Kylo is a Skywalker. While his surname is Solo his grandfather is a Skywalker. He is part of the story. Why do people seem to forget that??? There is no need for Rey to be connected to them because we already have Kylo representing the Skywalker clan. (This topic makes me want to go all Kylo lightsaber tantrum on people because they totally dismiss Kylo's bloodline)
Oh I know he’s a skywalker. One theory is that they could have a kid together and continue the skywalker bloodline, but I don’t want that to happen, lol.
I think he needs him to help lead the army, for now. Kylo doesn’t seem like the fear instilling power hungry leader that Vader was - too much inexperience and internal conflict. His anger while shooting Luke was so intense though, I think if there was a chance of him giving up the dark side before, it was gone after that.
Interesting. I interpreted the shooting at Luke as more if a turning point. Well, not the shooting itself, but his reaction after he stopped.
I suppose. I just think of Vader and the more awful things he did, the more he succumbed to the dark side. Kylo already killed his own father. But Vader did the right thing by Luke when he died. If they are trying to show us there’s no clear cut good/evil, maybe there is redemption for Kylo, and Rey can explore the dark side without turning to it.
We saw it this morning and I really loved it. Every bit of it!!
It also didn't feel like 2.5 hours. Saying good bye to Leia and Carrie makes me so sad. And my understanding was episode 9 was meant for her the way Han had 7, and Luke had 8. So I'm disappointed we will see a different story.
And in the previews seeing avengers and Cap on the big fancy screen in 3D? I about lost my fucking mind at "get this man a shield."

I'm just going to agree with every letter of your comments.
He didn’t know about either of them because he was told they all died. Not the same thing. Plus...what plot reason would there be to hide a baby in this universe??? Just drop this. It’s also not the same thing, because the whole I am your father plot, including both Luke and Leia, was not originally plotted. That shit just happened as Lucas went to write each movie on his little shitty legal pad. He wasn’t much a planner. So it doesn’t make sense in the original trilogy either, sure, but now Disney is in charge. They plotted all this shit.
Except that secret Leia baby was created because of planning. Hamill hadn't signed on to Jedi by the end of Empire, so they needed an out, just in case. So they wrote in Yoda's line about there being another. From the accounts I've read, they didn't even know who it would be at that point. So when Hamill agreed to Jedi, they no longer needed "another," and the sibling bit covered the cryptic bet-hedging comment from Empire.
Oh, I forgot to add that I really liked the few minutes that Kylo and Rey seemed to be on the same side. I liked them working together. Not really sure what I would want in a storyline there. But I thought they had good chemistry.

Dude, that entire battle I kept waiting for them to finish so we could see what would happen next: Would they both take over as the two Sith-ish lords? Would she turn dark and he not? Would he turn dark and she not? SO much angst!

You got the Avengers trailer? Im jealous. We have the most random assortment of trailers.

We got Avengers AND A wrinkle in time!!!! Lost my damn mind when I saw the trailer begin.

Just when I thought I was out-
Look. This is my point. Secret baby stuff from the original sort of just happened. It’s not happening now because there is no narrative reason for it, other than that people are thinking this is Star Wars so there’s probably a secret baby. It would not make sense for the story they are now telling, is my point.

Yes!! Much to my husband's dismay. I elbowed him every time Cap was on screen with that hair and beard. Honestly he should have felt good about that. Cap in the upcoming Avengers is basically his look. Lol.
I want to go see it again just for that preview on the big screen and in 3D.

Not to pull the conversation away from the The Last Jedi (which was awesome, but needed an intermission for a pee break), but...
My husband keeps saying "CUT IT OUT!" because I won't stop fangirling over this. I'd seen the preview but holy hell it was like a religious experience seeing it on the big screen. I will definitely see Avengers by myself on Friday and then with my family over the weekend in May. NO REGRETS.
I'm way late to the game, but I wasn't totally in love with it. I liked it, and I will watch it a million times more like Ep IV forward, but agreed with others who said that I wished they had figured out a way in this movie to explain Leia's absence in Ep 9.
I liked how Luke went out the Jedi way.
Adam Driver does Kylo so much better than Hayden Christensen did Anakin. He's perfect for that role.

I loved it except for three things:
It felt like they had no idea what to do with Flynn (and for that matter, Captain Phasma) in this movie.
I felt like the General-Organa-finally-uses-the-force scene was purposely toying with my emotions and could have been executed in a way that wasn't so hokey.
Benicio del Toro's character was forced.
I think Rey is no one from no where. I'm okay with that. It was stated she'd only seen the cave in her dreams and that Snoke knew a "light" would rise as Kylo's "dark" grew stronger.
I really love the Rey/Kylo connection arc. I don't want them to be a couple, but I think it would be kick ass if they were able to help each other balance the light and the dark within themselves. Ultimately ending the Republic and the Rebellion.
I don't mind the Flynn/Rose/Poe/Rey romance confusion. IRL, how simple and clear cut is forming a romantic bond with someone you barely know? Let alone at times of war?
The casino/Canto Bight portion of the movie could have been explained better. It dragged a bit and the explination and purpose of showing Canto Bight got lost.

I thought it was too long and dragged in places. The whole casino scene was too long. I really don't like the fact that they seem to be setting up a Rey-Finn-Rose love triangle. Seeing Leia looking fairly lifeless once injured hit me hard (thinking of Carrie Fisher).
There was also a lot I liked. I liked the scene where Snoke was killed and the tension of Kylo/Rey fighting. For a few minutes, you think this is going to be Kylo's redemption like when Vadar killed the Emperor to save Rey. I liked Poe realizing that he wasn't always right- his whole arc was good this time. Laura Dern's character was strong, especially at the end. I absolutely loved Luke projecting the fight with Kylo.
I really didn't like how there was such build-up to some characters in TFA and just in general who ended up being so unimportant. Snoke, Captain Phasma - both of these characters were duds overall.

Do you think they set up a Fin/Rose/Rey triangle? I didn’t see that at all. Phasma is the new Darth Maul I guess. I know they don’t have time to flesh out everything, but I agree she’s been a dud.

To some degree. I felt like in TFA, they were setting up a Rey/Fin romance. Then this time, a Fin/Rose romance. Then when Fin was talking with Rose at the very end, they showed Rey watching him.

I totally agree with all of your points. I liked it but was overall pretty underwhelmed after how awesome TFA was, and I'm kind of surprised how glowing this thread is - Rotten Tomato's audience liked it score is a super low 56% (compared to 88% for TFA). Yoda looked so cartoonish
