Interesting, because Luke is SO emo/whiny in Ep. 4, and in Ep. 5, he becomes much more developed and compelling as a hero. I love that parallel.
eta: This is, of course, my humble, only-watched-the-movies opinion
Luke has never been one of my faves but you're right. He did continually get better.
I think what I like most about this trilogy and Kylo Ren is his path to the dark side is sympathetic to some degree. That may have been the goal with Anakin's backstory but really all that boiled down to was he was stupid. Granted maybe a better actor and better prequels could make me feel differently about that but he always seemed so dumb. In the end it was his actions that killed Padme!
The Clone Wars cartoon did wonders for Anikin Skywalker's character. He was fleshed out, you got to see his conflict, his relationship with Obi-Won, his relationship with the Order, how he was being slowly manipulated. He was more angry than whiney.

Also, Ahsoka. Who remains my favorite.
I do agree with this. I found the clone wars to be really great and they did actually make Anakin an interesting and compelling character. I always forget to add them into my character calculus. I'm generally blinded by my rage hate for the prequels lol.
I'm only on page 3, so perhaps this is discussed, but I'm surprised that so far no one has mentioned the fact that Luke is noticably younger when confronting Kyloren outside of the cave; his beard is shorter and not grey. That was the biggest clue for me that he wasn't actually "there".

He also wasn't kicking up red.
(I was paying more attention the 2nd go round lol)

I realized it the second time I saw it. I was wondering if one of the fish nuns had given him a haircut.

I noticed that immediately. I think it's a continuity error - the only other times his beard looks like that is in flashbacks where he's younger. I don't think it's a clue that he's a projection, I think his feet not making marks on the ground is.

I disagree. He looks exactly like he did in the scene where he contemplated killing Kyloren and so it's how Kyloren would have remembered seeing him last, like an aging, yet still active Jedi, not the hobit that he had become.
I just thought "Oh hey, he went back to his New Hope hairstyle!" and didn't have second thought that it was a projection! Haha. I agree that it would match what Kylo Ren remembered though, Luke as he was when he was a Jedi Master.

Exactly. A flashback where he's younger. That scene would have taken place several years earlier.

She's disagreeing you that it's a continuity error. He projected himself looking awesome deliberately, because he wanted to look strong in front of Kylo and inspire hope in the galaxy.
Or maybe Luke is also the kind of guy who uses 10 year old photos for his FB profile picture and it's a vanity thing.

LOL
Honestly, though, I liked long haired "I've been alone for a reeeeeeeaaaaaallllly long time now and have forgotten mirrors are a thing" Luke's look better than "I run a Jedi school!" Luke. Something about his hair.
meshaliuknits, can you give me a list of the books you'd rec? Do you think any of them would be appropriate for an 11yo who has seen all the movies? I'm always looking for new ideas for Jackson. Like his mother, he reads too damn fast.

LOL
It would depend on what/who he's into and his maturity level. He's like 5th grade, yeah? (OMG when did that happen?)
There are several junior novels (I read these to my kids). The Adventures in Wild Space are pretty good. We've read most of the Ezra books (SW Rebels) and have enjoyed them. I hear Cobalt Squadron is good, but I haven't read it. The novelizations of the movies always add a little something something that didn't make the final cut, so I generally find those interesting.
If he's a more mature reader, I might start with From a Certain Point of View. It's a series of short stories told from the POV of minor characters. There's one about the little red droid that sparked when Luke and his uncle were picking out droids in ep. 4 that made me a little weepy. If he's a fan of the cartoons, there are several adult/young adult books that have characters from the cartoons like Ahsoka (not terribly well written, but the story was interesting), A New Dawn and Dark Disciple. Tarkin was pretty good too.

The only YA SW novel I have read is Rebel Rising (A Rogue One novel). If you are near a Barnes and Noble you should pop in and check out their Star Wars section; they had a good mix of books in the section for all reading levels.

Best line from the fish nun article "The Caretakers are not interested in her tortured backstory or her deeply middle-school emo telepathic AIM love-hate relationship with Kylo Ren."
I noticed that Luke looked different at the end, but I just chalked it up to his having decided to get a haircut and shave before returning to non-hermit society. (I am chastising myself for not noticing his lack of red salt streaks, though!)

Same here - I thought, "oh, he cleaned himself up!"
WOT?* that poor porg! Hopefully it will shit on cheetos head.
I have named the poor thing Trumporg. I wonder if I should save the domain name. Trumporg.org? Trump.org?
OMG I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT TRUMP.ORG IS AN ANTI-TRUMP WEBSITE. HOW STUPID ARE THESE PEOPLE? They did not buy the .org domain? SAD! (Or more happy hilarity.)

Right there with you. Totally didn't even consider projecting. You all make really good points about him wanting to look younger and strong to inspire hope and look like what kylo would remember.

Flash back Luke creeps me out. He has crazy eyes in them *shudders*
Checked out the 4DX theater today. HOLY CRAP! Definitely improved the movie experience. If anyone has been on Star Tours at Disney it is like Star Tours on crack x100 with a touch of Soarin' thrown in.

I finally got to see it tonight.
The Rey backstory being she came from nowhere made the scene with the stable boy using the force to get the broom make total sense to me. The future of the Jedi is going to come from these "nobodies."
Also, someone mentioned it upthread, but I'm curious what will come of the young Jedi Kylo took with him after he burned the temple down. They have to appear in 10, right?
