I'm only on page 3, so perhaps this is discussed, but I'm surprised that so far no one has mentioned the fact that Luke is noticably younger when confronting Kyloren outside of the cave; his beard is shorter and not grey. That was the biggest clue for me that he wasn't actually "there".
I noticed it and wondered what was going on there, but I didn't get it until he was still there after all the blasts.
We had to go to 3 theaters this morning but we finally saw it!
I have to say, seeing Billie Lourd hit me harder than Carrie Fisher for some reason. Probably just knowing that she was about to lose both her mother and grandmother is such a short time.

I liked it a lot overall, but this thread gives me a better appreciation for the Finn/Rose detour to the casino. I still didn't like Benicio Del Toro. I wonder if a less famous actor might've been better as it was obvious he was Very Important.

We finally saw the movie this morning. I need to re-see it in IMAX by myself (or at least no kids) to really catch everything. I'm a late fan and I haven't read any of the books (yet, I'm open to suggestions on where to start).
I did watch a 45 minute video on YouTube tonight with kids on all of the Easter Eggs/throw backs. I missed so much!
Our 5 week old foster kittens are now Finn, Poe, Rose, and Paige (the Porg).

I've seen it 5 times and I am still noticing things that I missed in a previous viewing.
I've read the following: -Bloodlines (Leia- takes place between the end of the original trilogy and TFA. Han and Ben are mentioned. If you like Leia it is a good one to read) -TFA novelization (Read this if you want to see what the movie didn't cover; it just provides more detail and a bit more background on some characters) -Rogue One novelization -Catalyst (Rogue One novel. Focuses on Galen Erso and Krennic) -Rebel Rising (this is a YA novel. Jyn Erso's backstory) -From a Certain Point of View (about halfway through this; it is short stories so i read a few at a time. Stories take place right at the start of A New Hope)
There are so many books out there that you can probably just grab one that interests you and start from there. I like to have the physical books so i've been slowly getting them when I can manage to find one for less than the ebook version.
meshaliuknits has read way more than I have so she can probably chime in with a few must reads.

Finally saw it last night. This has been the only one I’ve walked away from not being all FUCK YEAH STAR WARS! I am a pretty surface level viewer, though, so all the insights in this thread helped me and I’m sure i’ll enjoy it more upon second viewing.
I hated the humor. Hated it. It was so forced and obvious and interrupted my concentration. SW (particularly 3PO and Han) was always so good about using dry humor in a way that makes you giggle but doesn’t detract from the feel of the movie, and I thought TLJ couldn’t have been further from that feel. I chuckled at the tossing the light saber over the shoulder, and laughed when Leia jokes about changing her hair, but the rest did nothing except annoy me. I see I’m in the minority, though, so maybe I’m just getting old.
I'm currently reading Leia, Princess of Alderaan which focuses on 16 year old Leia - so leading up to episode 4. Holdo has popped up a couple times as a peer of Leia's in an intern/let's learn how to be leaders type of program. I was like "ah ha, that's how you're going to explain how Holdo got to be Leia's right-hand woman."
They also mentioned Saw Gerrara and talked about his way of fighting and how it was angering people. And C3PO just showed up too.
meshaliuknits, can you give me a list of the books you'd rec? Do you think any of them would be appropriate for an 11yo who has seen all the movies? I'm always looking for new ideas for Jackson. Like his mother, he reads too damn fast.
Has he read the Timothy Zahn books? They're not cannon now but I read them when they came out which means I was 10 for the first one. Also looking at book covers in google I definitely read these around that same time Splinter of the Minds Eye, Courtship of Princess Leia, Children of the Jedi, and Truce at Bakura. I don't remember much about them since that was 25 years ago lol.

I read the Timothy Zahn books in middle school and I loved them so much!!! I remember reading a few other fan fiction books and none were as good as those. But they are kind of like an alternate ending now.
I finally saw it yesterday and bernsteincat I feel EXACTLY the same about the humor. I basically said all of that almost word for word to my friend when we got out of the theater.
Also I see I'm in the minority of hating the Kylo/Rey back and forth scenes. When he was shirtless my friend and I laughed out loud. I just could not take it seriously after that. And neither of us wanted to see that so it did not help. I can't stand the Kylo character in general but I am so over brooding man-pain in media so I know that adds to it for me. I feel no sympathy for him and would be very happy if Rey sabered his head clean off.
I'm also a Finn/Rey shipper so I'm also in the minority there hah!
I don't really get why Holdo didn't share her plan with Poe or even just tell him she had a plan. It was a good plan and I don't see why he would have fought her on it.
We saw it this morning and I really loved it. Every bit of it!!
It also didn't feel like 2.5 hours. Saying good bye to Leia and Carrie makes me so sad. And my understanding was episode 9 was meant for her the way Han had 7, and Luke had 8. So I'm disappointed we will see a different story.
And in the previews seeing avengers and Cap on the big fancy screen in 3D? I about lost my fucking mind at "get this man a shield."

Zhan wrote the new (canon) Thrawn book and he's writing the sequel which IS NOT COMING OUT FAST ENOUGH.
I always liked the Darth Plagueis book by James Lucieno. He's also written some of the new (canon) books. They got a few of the old EU authors to write the new expanded universe.

My husband has finally seen it and now I can wander around the house saying "Read them, you have. Page turners they are not." It's like a weight has been lifted. lol
He has one major complaint about the movie: Princess Leia should have exploded upon contact with the vacuum of space. This was also his main complaint about Guardians of the Galaxy 2. He has dubbed it "Disney physics" though I think Star Wars was playing fast and loose with physics long before Disney showed up.

I loved the casino theme and wanted more of that. What is going on in the rest of the universe that isn't a Sith or Jedi. And loved that Rey doesn't have a significant bloodline, which ties in the little boy with the broom. The title of the movie all supports the no more Siths or Jedis. Just complicated people all over the universe that are inspired by hope. Also says a lot about the current society we live in...the power of the people.

Q for Finn/Phasma fight scene - when Finn falls backwards into some chasm, how did he pop back up to strike down Phasma? I've seen it twice and still can't figure it out.
He landed on top of a rising platform a la Super Mario.

He’s subordinate and she doesn’t need to explain; it’s his job to follow orders, not question them. His superiors do not need to explain to everyone, or *any* one, that there is a plan. Whether he would have fought them or not is irrelevant. He’s not *supposed* to fight orders. And she’s not supposed to placate him or anything else. He is supposed to be trustworthy and follow orders; by not following orders he puts others at risk due to his own actions and inactions and insubordination. Nobody should be confused, they should all want to punch him or yell at him for not following orders. (Or maybe it’s just me, as part of a military family. Lol.)

He seems to like these oddball roles? Just like the collector in GOTG. He must get paid a shit-ton for, like, 2 weeks of filming. LOL.
I thought the scene with the guards after Snoke was killed was kind of...hilarious? Like, these are 2 amazing Jedis, can't they decimate these guys a little faster? Also, these guys stick around? Because I would be out as soon as my boss died...no offense, I'll take any excuse for an early day.
It was a beautiful scene, though, the red and black. The same reason, I'm sure, they decided the sand would be red. Because red, black and white make for awesome visuals.
I was just able to see the movie today. I skimmed this thread so apologies if I repeat anything:
- Nice to see Yoda back (as a puppet no less). Also nice to see Maz Kanata. - Leia floating around in space was so, so corny - annoying that Poe kept going against Holdo but I kind of figured he’d eventually show that she knew what she was doing and Poe would realize he should’ve obeyed - Hux reminded me of Eric Trump - I didn’t remember the significance of the gold dice. They were Han’s I suppose? - Saw it coming when Kylo Ren sliced Snoke in half but it was still satisfying and exciting - I gasped out loud at the visuals/silence in the scene when Holdo shot through the First Order ship at light speed - I laughed whenever Chewy got frustrated at something and threw up his arms. Sad when he was eating the rotisserie and that last little porg was crying at him - I absolutely didn’t see it coming that the Luke at the end was his projection. Laughed and said WOW out loud in the theater. Very, very well done. (I suppose he was able to give Leia a kiss because they have the Force/family connection?)
Was there any kind of post credits scene or Carrie Fischer tribute? We both really really had to pee so we left when the credits started.
