Can I just say that I have no idea how they're going to wrap all of this up in one measly episode. It feels so, so rushed. And that makes me really sad. DH and I just started watching GOT after New Year's so it's all really fresh for us. And up until season 7 (and parts of that, too), we were fully hooked. But dang, season 8 is letting us down bad.
Have you guys seen the petition to re-do the final season with "competent writers"? lol
My guess is that D and D turned down two full seasons because 1. they were sick of the show and wanting to move on to new projects and 2. they honestly thought they would be able to compensate with longer episodes.
I mean, I don't HATE it, mostly because I'm just eager to see how things resolve. And there is some really beautifully crafted film work this season. Acting is good, as always. But I'm also REALLY nervous that there are a TON of characters we're not going to see in the finale. They've narrowed it to the only storyline that "matters" which is whether or Dany keeps/succeeds on the iron throne. And, despite being called Game of Thrones, the show is SO much more than that.
For someone who has never been a Dany fan, and always thought she’d be a villain or lose it or whatever - it’s sort of a double edged sword. I’m right which is always pleasant but omg get her off my goddamn screen. She’s boring AF to me and always has been. I want everyone else not her.
So I have a huge dilemma. The lead singer of one of my favorite bands is playing a charity show Sunday night. It’s a small enough band and I’ve been to enough shows, I know him. Like he might not know my name, but I’m one of the ones he’ll hug when he sees, and I’ve had conversations where he says “like we were talking about last time...” (which went straight to me head - he really remembers me! 😂)
H will not be waiting for me, but he said he won’t spoil it.
Ahhh! I don’t know. Is seeing Brad worth missing it live?!

There are at least one or two prequels to GOT that will be coming to HBO, right? Does anyone know details and/or if D&D are going to be the showrunners for those series as well?
I would LOVE to see a sequel to GOT that shows the 7 Kingdoms 20 years later or something.

Jane Goldman is the showrunner, and Martin is credited as co-creator. Goldman has some great credentials, so I think this will be good. The one currently being developed will start filming in Northern Ireland this summer, and take place during the Age of Heroes, which is 5,000-10,000 years before the start of the current series. We should see the formation of a lot of the great houses, the original Long Night when the whitewalkers were first created, etc.
I think Bryan Cogman was the only one associated with the current show who HBO asked to write a proposal/treatment, but it's currently not ordered to series.
Yeahhh... I've actually read all of the books. Numerous times.
But thanks for mansplaining this to me. Super appreciated.
I apologize for being mansplain-y. I don’t have issues with disagreements on these issues (clearly, since I seem to have very different opinions on a lot of characters here) so I wanted to provide context for some of the complaints. Having reread my comment, I see how the tone can come across poorly.
I just listened to the end of PSA, and I agree with Lovett. I see Jon's point, too, but I totally agree with Lovett.
YEP! This is where I am. They COULD have written her transition to this. But they didn't.
I think they backed themselves into a corner a bit with things they cut, primarily probably-fake Aegon and Tyrion’s turn to darkness. Not having a Targaryen/Targ pretender on the Iron Throne who was well liked and not having dark-Tyrion pushing for revenge and war, it seems like they just said “screw it” and have telling the story in bullet points rather than paragraphs.
To turn to real world implications, I’ve been talking with a few other people who have a rough time with this because of our experiences. We have somebody who worried about the “taint” of her family turning cruel and suddenly killing innocents, suddenly becoming the person she fears. The idea that if one of your parents and a parental figure have something that resembles Targaryen madness (delusions of grandeur, cruelty, impulsity, lack of empathy) that you are doomed is my greatest fear. To have it portrayed as something you might be a crisis or two away from and that people expect at any time is... not great, to put it mildly.

How soon will you be able to watch it after? And do you use social media/connect to the media in any way?
I learned of Olynna Tyrell's death about 8am the morning after GOT by doing a quick scroll of facebook while on vacation. I was so pissed, but I also vowed never to not watch "live" again because the media will ruin it quickly.
If you can watch, like, Monday morning, I'd go to your show.

Well, it’s an early show. There is a slight probability I could/would watch it when I get home, if I can manage before 11. Otherwise, it would be sometime Monday. I do work from home on mondays...
i think I will be going. My bff said she was going, so now I feel like a should. The same folks are playing a home show in philly Saturday night, which is also tempting, but 2 hours away vs 1 hour (DC).

Where do you live? Those sound like the same distances I'd drive to each place
That sounds like a solid plan. I hope you have fun!

2 miles south of the city line. Just south of the key bridge. West side, not Dundalk.
So - dh just watched. He’s read the books. I have not. He thinks Arya will die. That the faceless men kill her because she left. He thinks she kills dany and then gets killed.

Thoughts?
Supposedly GRRM promised his wife nothing would happen to Arya, so I think her plot armor will keep her safe. She also didn't receive the Robert Baratheon "touch of death" in the pilot. I think if the Faceless Men come after her, more likely they wouldn't kill her, but leave her permanently blind.

No. The Many Faced God was promised a death, and she refused to poison the actress, denying him that death. So the waif went after her to serve the god his death (by killing Arya, which I think she just really wanted to do anyway, because the god got his death when the waif killed the actress), but instead, Arya killed the waif, which gave the god a bonus death. So, the death-debt was paid, and she was good to go. (I've also read the books.)
Vox’s TV guy predicted that Bran gets the iron throne. Hmmm.
I mean, I kind of get this but kind of don't. He has all the knowledge from the past to help make decisions...but he's also not really a person any more. He's just a big brain with no emotions.
Vox’s TV guy predicted that Bran gets the iron throne. Hmmm.
Bran is also the favorite to win the throne in the big betting pools in Vegas. I don’t get it at all. And I haven’t really researched why so many people think this will happen. I figured maybe as a long-shot dark horse? I figured **if* this happens it will be such a wild last episode, I’d rather just see it unfold when I watch.

Some people are all in on the theory that Bran is evil and warged into Drogon and burned down KL (instead of by Dani's command). So basically he orchestrated things to make sure Jon would feel like he has to assassinate Dani, becoming the next King(Queen)slayer and therefore unable or unwilling to take the throne himself. I think it's pretty farfetched and I don't buy the NK made Bran evil when he touched him, but who-tf knows at this point.
I read the leaked spoilers and they were mostly spot on for last week, so I’m kind of thinking they will be for this one as well.
This whole season is leaving me feeling empty, not related to whatever may happen tomorrow, just in general with everything that’s already happened. I feel sad, even with Cersei’s death. I hated her but what a great character.
I haven't read spoilers but I have the same empty feeling about this season. It's not that I disagree with the outcomes necessarily, but things were so rushed and glossed over that somehow it feels slip shod and unfinished and ultimately unsatisfying.

Having read the spoilers, it’s not just that things don’t make sense given the book arcs... it doesn’t make sense given what some of the people have said this season! They said they had 3 WTF moments from George 5 or 6 years ago, but I think there are that many just in where characters end up/their roles tomorrow lol.
As much as it was said years ago that the ending is going to be similar, there are several major characters I think will end up differently. Some of them are because they have had to merge multiple characters to fill roles they cut, like how Cersei, Dany, and Jon all have some of fAegon’s plot. In contrast they cut some darker points for fan favourites. Tyrion most notably is DARK by the time he leaves King’s Landing and does thinks to encourage war in Westeros before he gets to Meereen. The show runners have also minimized a lot of magical elements, from the Stark kids all being wargs to Dany’s dragon dreams and the slew of prophecies that have proven true.
I don’t know if GRRM will ever release A Dream of Spring, but I would love to see how everything unfolds in the books. I am sticking my head in the sand until then.
