Ugh! I feel like I’m cheating since my official diagnosis is mild not moderate. But I do have to use my inhaler most days now. The other issue is my insurance only covers the asthma doctor 70% so a visit to see if I’m considers “moderate” by now could cost me a fair bit and doesn’t seem truly necessary... ugh.
1) get your shot. There’s a reason asthmatics are on the list
2) if you need your rescue inhaler daily it’s time to see a doctor about that. You absolutely shouldn’t need to take that daily and that likely means it’s time for a maintenance inhaler, not just a rescue inhaler.
Yeah I am thinking I need to just go anyway since it’s been a while. It’s somewhat seasonal for me in that I’m very allergic to pollen so during high pollen count times I use it daily, but even during non pollen season I’ve been using it more. I will call today.
I’m irritated that my insurance covers everything 100% (minus co pay) but for asthma for some reason it’s 70%. But I’m just going to do it. I’m considering allergy shots too - I’ve heard of people who saw less need to use the inhaler after getting those for a while.
If someone you're not close with were to mention vaccine hesitancy to you, would you try to change her mind, or leave it be? I don't want to overstep.
This is the wife of one of my H's best friends. I know her husband much better than I know her and am trying to build a relationship with her, but it's tough since they're not local and haven't been since he met her. She included me on a group text with some of her other friends, and I was excited because that was a first. She was sharing some fear about the vaccine based on a NY Post article about a UT woman who died a few days after getting her second vaccine dose.
So far, I've expressed sorrow about the woman who passed and mentioned I, too, have been nervous about the lack of long-term studies but am looking forward to getting my vaccine once I'm eligible. She just said she's eligible and not rushing to get it.

Let it go, right?
I would probably try to suggest this person follow Jessica Malaty Rivera on either Instagram or Twitter. She does an excellent job talking through these types of fears/explaining the vaccine trials/correlation vs. causation.. Since this isn’t someone you are close to, I think suggesting a source of good information is the best way to go.
laurack ,book yourself an appointment. If it is on the list, you are eligible!
My H got the shot under similar circumstances.

I’m sorry your insurance sucks for this. Healthcare costs in this nation are a travesty.
Allergy shots might help. I was on them prior to Covid and plan to restart soon. I have a different breathing issue that’s unique, so they won’t have that impact for me but I believe they often can.
I definitely think you need to work with a doctor more closely for this, at least to get it under control. You’ll feel so much better! I no longer even need to premeditate before running!

Delaware is now allowing doctors and hospitals to offer shots to people under 65 with high-risk or moderate health issues. The state run vaccine events are still only for people over 65 and healthcare workers.
I registered for the waiting list with the big hospital system so we'll see what happens. The idea of being able to be in the same room with my parents this summer is making me tear up a little.
Yesterday NY opened up vaccine eligibility to include public-facing government employees, and I got H an appointment for today! He gets his first Pfizer shot this afternoon. I'm simultaneously insanely jealous, because in truth his public exposure is not really higher than mine, and glad for our family that he'll be one less potential vector of spread.
I saw a stat (https://gothamist.com/news/80-adults-ny-state-be-eligible-covid-19-vaccines-week) that 80% of adults in NYS are now eligible for the vaccine. I had a really easy time yesterday making H's appointment for today. In fact I cycled through making and cancelling about 4 different appointments for Th, Fri, Sat, and Sun., optimizing driving distance and day/time. With so much availability, and only 20% of the adult population left to make eligible... why can't we just do it?
President Joe Biden is directing states to make all adults eligible for the vaccine by May 1st, but Governor Andrew Cuomo says the state has a long way to go to vaccinate its roughly 15 million adults. He said reaching the 2 million fully vaccinated so far has been a massive undertaking.
He doesn't seem to want to commit even to 5/1 eligibility for "the rest of us." Covid Act Now is listing "the rest of us" in NY as not being eligible until "summer 2021." It is feeling really depressing.
I really wish our state would move faster on the phases. So many states are moving quickly and it seems like it will be May before DH and MIL get vaccinated. Ugh.
I hear you. Out of my close friend group of 10 people there are only 2 of us that aren't eligible and I think it will be May for us as well.
But I do wonder if they'll start to ramp up soon. My sister is a frequent volunteer at a clinic. Originally, when they'd put up a schedule of appointments they'd be booked within 10 minutes. They put out a schedule on Tuesday morning for appointments this weekend. Two days later there are still like 80 slots available for Sunday (even with the new phase being added yesterday). I'm sure that's not the case for all clinics (she's on Bainbridge) but it seems like people are having a much easier time booking appointments than early on. So hopefully that means we can pick up speed soon.

This seems ridiculous. A bunch of my friends also became eligible this week and they all already got their first vaccine, within a day of that eligibility (and all at their preferred site/time). This seems to be moving so quickly and everyone I know who is eligible got their first already. I think western NY might be lagging a bit but at this rate it seems 5/1 is more than doable to open it up.
Yesterday NY opened up vaccine eligibility to include public-facing government employees,
DH is available in CO starting tomorrow for the same reason! It's going to be harder to find him an appt though. Work is talking about maybe setting up a vaccine drive for employees, but they haven't been able to secure doses to be able to do so.
Is anyone watching Drs. Fauci et. al testifying regarding the COVID-19 response?
My favorite was the R from Louisiana complaining about "equity" and that rural republicans are refusing the vaccine but dems aren't doing enough to educate them to convince them to get it. The mental gymnastics are astounding.
Re: Redistributing doses we have to other countries. It’s just the smart thing to do. People will travel. No one ever stopped, it was just severely curtailed. Even optimistic Dr. Jha said in a NYT interview that the one thing he’s most pessimistic about is the global vaccination campaign. For purely selfish reasons alone, vaccinating the world protects Americans. It reduces the risk of someone traveling here and seeding another crisis.
Yes please distribute them to those countries that cant get any as there are none available to buy on the international market. At great sacrifce to other areas, we have found money in our budget to buy vaccines - but we still can't get them for the next few months at least.

Susie, I don't know WTF is up with Cuomo's comments. Yes, it's a huge effort but I'd assume the beginning of the vaccination initiative would be the hardest part of all.
And it's hard to know that based on having an underlying health condition, I would have been eligible already in a bunch of other states, but my state requires *two* conditions at my age.
Honestly that's just getting to gymnastics to qualify. Come on! Not you, your state DOH, I mean.
There are a few states where I would be eligible now too, based on being a family caregiver for my dad in active cancer treatment. It is a huge relief to me that he's now 2.5 weeks post-first Moderna dose, and will get #2 on 3/29, but prior to that I was terrified that I could bring covid with me unknowingly (from having members of my household "out in the world") when I go to help him. Even now I'd feel much better if I could be vaccinated too. Unfortunately we live in neighboring states and neither of our states places a value on the care provided by family members to medically vulnerable people.

Has his work talked to the county? My job was doing that and had a few appts this week for those not already vacc'd. Otherwise, I'm pretty good at the searching and would be happy to help him!

Yes, they said they're working on it. No updates since last week, so who knows.

Yes, @laurarack go see a pulmonologist. If you're using your rescue inhaler every day, your asthma is not under control. You need a maintenance inhaler.
My pulmonologist wants me in if I have to use my rescue inhaler more than a few times a week.

I already complained about this in the @@ thread, but add me to the list of people annoyed that my state hasn't yet joined the growing list of states with a plan to open to everyone over 16 soon.

I'm sure there will be an announcement soon, I'm just impatient.
Both H and I have one condition - I thought I had 2 but that was when I thought the BMI cutoff was 25, not 30.
We'd both be eligible starting Monday (?) if we lived in Wisconsin.
I've thought about seeing if I could drive to Hudson or something but that feels a little squicky to me.

I just made an appointment with a new allergy and asthma doctor (mine moved locations so it’s too far away now) and I have a video consult on the 30th, from there they may send me to have testing. Looks like due to Covid they are starting everyone with video consult.
So would he then refer me to a pulmonologist if necessary?
I’ve never had an asthma attack that landed me in hospital or anything but generally what happens is I’ll start feeling like it’s a little harder to catch my breath, and depending on the time of year it doesn’t go away but gets worse and I start feeling a little panicky, then I will use the inhaler.
During spring pollen and to a lesser extent fall grass season I am woken up by breathing difficulty a couple times a week and can’t go back to sleep until I use the inhaler, this is what first prompted me to visit a doctor maybe 4 years ago.
The last time I was there he said next time if things have worsened he might put me on Singulair. But I read that can have a lot of mental side effects which gives me pause as I have enough anxiety as it is.

I've been on Singulair for years. No side effects.

In my experience the allergist/asthma doc will order you a maintenance inhaler. If you have concerns about a specific one, mention it. There are a lot of different types. I don't know anything about them but there are a lot. You might only have to use it during your allergy season. They all tend to be expensive so cost could be a factor in which one seems right to you.
I crossed state lines because I qualified there. I felt a little weird about it, but mostly not, because there were so many appointments available. I didn't feel like I was taking one from someone else since there were 100s available.
I sincerely hate most of the websites that have been set up by stores and pharmacies. Krogers is a continual clusterfuck where they show the first appt time, and then say there is no second date. Walgreens just errors out on me all the time. Walmart I have no idea because there is never a date open to even try. Safeway/Albertsons is fine, and I only say that cause that's where I got my appt.

My condition is pregnancy. If Walz doesn't update the MN guidelines by next week, I'm going to strongly consider it. Mostly because I have a wave of irrational anger every time another state announces they are speeding up their timeline.
I heard (no actual source, just fb vaccine group) that they wouldn’t be honoring MN residents if they didn’t work in WI. I’m also annoyed because we have estimates of supply, and MPR is reporting on it. just freaking throw a date out there already.
I also crossed state lines for my vaccination. It's only 30 minutes from my house so not far. I qualified there, now a week later my own state is open. We had many friends do it as well. There were many appointments open too.

Right? I'd be totally fine with an announcement of "we'll be opening up to all on 4/15" or something like that but this silence is making me a little impatient.

I wish I lived in the US to help my step dad. He's tried a lot of stuff and just can't figure it out. I think they just aren't good at technological stuff. Ugh.

You may be able to help more than you think. When I called, CVS said they update appointments daily between 2-5 am Pacific Time. That’s the middle of the night here, but not where you are. Just an idea.
