Good morning from beyond the grave 🧟♀️ Time travel has risen my from my grave at 3:22 a.m.
I've already made soft pretzels and 5 dozen sugar cookies for a kindergarten party I had the bright idea of hosting a month ago. The candlestick ones look like dicks.
A had a winter concert yesterday (he participated!!) and it was one of those "it matters when you show up" moments-- he smiled so big as soon as he found us in the audience and told the friend next to him that his mom and dad were there. It was so sweet. And because my brain can't just stop at a nice thought, it made me feel terrible for parents who can't leave work for a 1 p.m. concert.
We had the final light fixtures installed yesterday in the kitchen (it was backordered) and I got the shipping notification for the counter stools so the kitchen is almost totally finished. I can't wait to show everyone the final before/after.
I also woke up at the ass crack because I am broken. Why do I do this at least once every weekend? I hope that I have a little time to doze on the couch this afternoon.
Today's bound to be an emotional one. We have two going away parties to attend and my heart is really broken by one of them. It's so hard to say good-bye to people who are part of your daily life and have just made things better for you. I hope I have done the same for them.
Thanks sproctopus. The big to-do will be adjusting our kids to this new reality. I think we will need some big distractions in January.
The guilt when you can't attend those events is rough and there can be so many of them! MH has only attended a handful of these sorts of things because he has a very rigid schedule.
I’m sick. Apparently I have Covid? I left work early bc I was sniffly and took a test JIC bc I was the carpool ride home for 5 girls last night. Quick, immediate positive. Took another brand before bed, clearly negative.
I’m erring on the side of caution of course and assuming I have it but blahhhhh.

I’m up early, too. I caught a cough from my kiddos right at the tail end of the head cold they gave me, so I’m still riding the recliner overnight trying to alleviate some of my congestion and coughing. The nice part is that the new cat cuddles with me on and off throughout the night. Reminds me of my old cat who used to hang with me when I was dealing with pregnancy woes overnight. She seems like a good egg, even if the dummy jumped into a crockpot full of soapy water soaking in the sink yesterday 😂 still working on those boundaries.
I’m a little prickly because of a shitty email one of my troop parents sent me. We are limiting cookie sales this year to booths and online shipping, because I don’t have the mental strength to get through another year of trying to get individual kids’ in-person sales stocked with their parents’ bad math and bad attitudes. I asked for a volunteer to mentor this year and no one stepped up, so I’m cutting back our sales to what I can manage.

Patsy Baloney you need a dartboard of that woman's face! Your troop sounds so fun because of all the neat things you organize and that woman has the nerve to complain while also refusing to help be the solution you came up with? The entitlement some people feel, geez. Good for you setting a boundary.

She’s mad about it…but won’t volunteer.
Girl, bye.
I always hated managing cookie season. So much work. So little reward.
A colleague unexpectedly passed away this week. She was only 44. Her kids are my kids' ages.
Today is baking, laundry, organizing Christmas gifts.
I supported a kickstarter campaign about a year ago for an in-home lure-coursing setup. It's supposed to come Monday. My border collie is going to lose her mind!

My dd, who has broken both of her wrists over the past 2 years, fell at school yesterday while doing 'cheerleading stunts' during free time out on the field when they threw her in the air and she fell and landed on her wrist. It was right before dismissal, so the nurse called and said she was in pain and ought to be checked out and didn't recommend her riding the bus home, so could I come pick her up? And of course last night was dh's work party that was $$$ and already paid for. Luckily, the grandparents came through and met us at the ortho urgent care (which we also luckily knew was better to go to than the downtown children's ER for this type of thing) so that we could still go to the party, and also luckily, this time it's just a sprain, but poor dd is still in a lot of pain. I told her no more cheerleading stunts, at school or otherwise, considering she is NOT a cheerleader and does not have the training to do them and was basically just goofing off with her friends.
The dog had me up at 4, but when she snuggled next to me in bed, apparently I slept until 7. I only woke up because I hear E’s door at 7:15 where she’s on watch #2 of the Eras Tour movie this weekend.
I need to run to our local bird store for gifts and then debate if I want fun Christmas plates for Christmas Eve or not.
My daughter found out about Santa. I knew it was coming (she’s 9, 4th grade) but we were so close that I thought I could get one more year. Some kids at school told her and she came home and asked H and they talked about it. Then I got home from work and she realized our elf wasn’t real and teared up. I’m not ok. When my son found out it was cushioned by making him a helper with his little sister, and he loved playing Santa for her and watching him do that was so sweet.
It’s not that I’m so upset over the Santa part being done- I mean, I am- but I think it’s just everything. I feel like the little years just zoomed by and I’m so excited to see where these middle and young adult years take us, but I just wish the path wasn’t moving quite so fast. The world is such a tough place and I’m really going to miss when reindeer could fly and the real Cinderella lived in a real castle and there was magic and wonder and things bigger than them.
And I have my period, so I’m feeling everything at 110%.
I stayed up too late last night and then slept like shit. So I feel awful today. It’s been a long, frustrating week since DD1 had Covid and was out of school while my work was also super busy. Everyone in my house is tired, sick of being home and grumpy. I just want everyone to leave me alone but that won’t happen. DD1 wanted to go to basketball but she has to a wear a mask and was sobbing about it this morning. I’m over it.
I was talking to my dad last night and he made me feel like crap. I work part time and I got a good review and a decent-ish raise and I was feeling good about it. He asked what my salary is and I stupidly told him and he made me feel like crap about it being too low. My patents always do things like that and I wish I hadn’t told him (I didn’t want to but I knew he’d make a thing about if I didn’t). Ugh god I hope I never treat my kids the way my parents treat me. 😞

meganew what helped me was creating new holiday routines that the kids could not do when they were younger. Every year usually on the 23rd we all 5 ride our bikes to town and we go to the local bookstore and everyone gets one book for break and then we ride to our local pizza place for lunch. Then we ride home and read, shower and get in jammies and we have snack food/charcuterie board for dinner while we watch a movie.
Today is early Christmas with my extended family (18 people). Starts at 8:30am for breakfast and ends at 2/3pm. H and autistic DS(7.5) will be leaving at 11am/12pm at the latest. It's too much sensory overload for DS to handle for very long. I'll stay for lunch and then my sisters and I will go see our in home childcare provider from our childhood together.

Today’s plans involve some sort of workout, wrapping gifts, and running a few errands. Maybe getting my nails done, depending on how I feel.
My H is still recovering from whatever nasty cold type thing he’s had basically all of December (not covid according to the tests). I’m ready to get back to sharing the chores - doing them all myself is not my idea of a good time.
noodleoo, I'm sorry your dad knocked the wind out of your sails. A good review an a raise is an accomplishment no matter what the end salary adds up to. Especially since the majority of people in the US have crappy salaries, that's a stupid thing for him to criticize!
We went to Longwood Gardens last night and although I had high expectations, I think it even surpassed them. My H and I both agreed this was the best Christmas display we've seen, and we typically do try to get to some kind of lights/market/other Christmas themed thing at least once a year. It was our first visit to the garden, period, and now we definitely need to go back in the summer blooming months, too.
Today we are doing nothing. This fall has been so busy and the last three weekends in particular have had no down time, so I am really looking forward to just relaxing. I'll probably make a couple of meals so we can eat, but otherwise it's a movies in bed day. I also have a Christmas themed Wooble to crochet so I'll work on that.
I’m also up early. I think it’s because I’m draining from this cold and my throat hurts. I’ll take it over the congestion though. I haaate being congested.
I need to grocery shop today and then the rest of the weekend is all about Christmas prep. I have a ton of baking to get done so that I’m not stressing over it next weekend. I had suggested last weekend that a friend and I get together and I’m hoping she takes me up on just coming over here to hang out while I bake tomorrow morning.
DH is taking the boys skiing Sunday. I’m a little bummed to miss, but I’ve got too much to do and it will be nice to have some time alone to listen to music and work through my list.

She’s so lucky it’s just a sprain! First thing I used to teach as a coach was what to do when a stunt starts to fall. Aka concussion protection.
I met a friend for a hike this morning with our dogs and we had a bald eagle flying around us for a little while. I know they're in our area, but I've only seen one up close one other time. They're so big!
sadie can you share a link to the lure coursing set up? I'd love to be able to set up a course at my parents farm. My younger dog will lose her mind for it.
I'm starting to feel better from the URI I caught from DS that led to an ear infection. And from the extraction I had Wednesday. He wasn't able to do the implant at the same time, so I have an Essix to wear since it's a lateral incisor. I can't wear it to eat or drink anything but water which is tricky. DS had his wisdom teeth extracted yesterday. He's doing freakishly well so far. He's down to just ibuprofen/ice at the moment.
I haven't shopped at all or done the tree. Plus I have to get my mom out to shop-- shopping in a bricks & mortar store is her favorite thing about Christmas.
My DS was up before 7am, already wearing his most festive sweater, listening to the Titanic soundtrack on his Echo dot. He's something.
I was up at 7 but really wanted to sleep in, but it took me forever to get back to sleep and it was that weird kind of sleep where I feel like I'm half awake. Finally got up at 9:30.
We have a family party later. H's family is huge so we just rent a church basement on one of the weeks before Christmas. I have to make mac and cheese, bacon wrapped little smokies, and I'm also making these smoky fire crackers that we love. DS also insisted we make gingerbread men last night so we did that, so I have to ice them and hopefully make them not look terrible!
The party's at 5 so we probably won't be home til 830. Probably make a cocktail and watch a Christmas movie then.

beerlover just curious about how many will attend the party. DH's family Thanksgiving was way too big this year, not really enough room for all to sit and despite SIL's toxic positivity people actually did leave early because there was no room. (Note my annoyance at SIL, the reason there were too many is she invited extra people the rest of us are not related to, she needs to host her own thing with those people, but won't. As FIL hosts that's between them, but I'm still annoyed as it used to be a fun and more intimate gathering.) So curious when renting a place makes sense. FIL's house is not small and has a full finished basement even.

I wish I had more space to set up a larger course! A farm sounds perfect!
maudefindlay, its like 40-50 people. H's mother has 7 siblings so its all of them and their family/extended family, some other randos, etc. lol.
The church basement is nice because it's already decorated and has a kitchen for us to plug in crockpots and all of that stuff. We also hire a Santa for the kids and provide him with a few small gifts for him to have them open. It's a nice party!

DS is still miserable. I feel so bad for him.
He was so cute though. He lost another tooth and my mom made a comment about how lucky he was that the tooth fairy came. He told her to lose her own tooth so the tooth fairy will come to her house 😂
We have a gathering every year the Saturday before Christmas. Usually it ends up being a cousin and 2 other couples. Sometimes a 3rd couple cam make it, but that's the most it ever is. This year it's all of them and 3 others. Our house is just under 1200 square feet and now a large dog. I don't even know how this is going to work. lol Maybe short stints on the patio since it won't be frigid.
My mom invited me to a Christmas play up at the university this afternoon, so H will take Kid 1 to archery lessons while I'm at that. No other big plans for the day except tidying the house. Tomorrow I'd like to plan out some activities for me and the kids to do while we're on winter break. Mine starts a few days before theirs, so I'm not feeling the usual pressure to finish the last parts of my Christmas shopping this weekend. I could definitely get used to winter breaks that start off with a couple days of me time!
