I've never had a flu shot either. I'm old and I've never once had the flu. My docs don't seem to think it's a necessity either. In fact my current doc says she doesn't offer them unless asked. I'm under the impression she thinks they aren't necessary for healthy adults.

sure, its not a necessity. I am not going to die. I am otherwise healthy. I will probably be back at work tomorrow (probably will take a half day, though).
But thank goodness I have parents close enough to take my daughter to daycare because I was so delirious I couldn't move from bed, that I have childcare in the first place, and an understanding enough employer and enough vacation days that this isn't going to cause me any worry about my job, etc.
Many people don't have the luxuries I have in getting this sick.

Oh, I'm not saying people shouldn't get them. I am simply stating my experiences with the flu and my doctor.

Also (and I never thought about this until Amelia Pond drilled it into my head last year), it isn't only to prevent *you* from getting sick. It is also about preventing others -- particularly immunocompromised others who could die from the flu -- from getting sick.

I got mine today, and I deal with the achy arm and what will probably be me feeling tired and a bit crummy for a few hours later today or tomorrow. It's so much better than when I actually get the flu and I'm sick as a dog for 3-5 days, and then feeling run down for another week.
I got one for the first time since childhood last year because we started TTC and the flu can be bad for a pregnant women. I got this year's two weeks ago. No, I've never had the flu before but getting the flu shot doesn't do any harm so why not get it?

yes.
yes, but many professionals say to get it only if you know you will be around those types of people or if you are at higher risk yourself.

It has caused harm in some people.
I'm honestly not trying to debate this. I am fine with people getting the flu shot. That's great. But I am not that fine with people bashing those healthy adults who choose not to.

What types of "professionals"? Certainly not medical professionals. If your doctor instructs you to not get a flu shot, that is a pretty big red flag to get a new doctor.

Yep, please keep my friends on chemo safe y'all. Thnx.
Some of these responses are going to make my head explode.
DS2 got his first shot, but he gets two this year. The rest of us were going to go in a couple of weeks when he gets the second one. Maybe we will get ours sooner.

I never understand this argument. I promise that you engage in SO MUCH more risky behavior than that of flu shot complications.

I can't imagine a health care provider recommending AGAINST a flu shot. My H works in doctors offices and hospitals and his work recommends all their employees get it. Most of the people I know who are the most adamant about getting it are doctors, nurses, teachers, etc, etc. These are the ones who will be near all the sick people and I would assume would want to prevent themselves from getting it!
Also: if you are going to be around the elderly or young children, you should also get it. As others said, it is about protecting you and those for whom the flu is a high risk.
I give up. I respect everyone's choice to get the shot or not. Obviously many of you don't respect other's that make a decision other than your own.
8-D I don't respect people that are making decisions that are detrimental to their own health and that of those around them, especially when these decisions are made at the hands of ill-informed anecdotes and junk science. You also never answered my question about who these "professionals" are.

Again, in my over 350,000 hours of life (yes, I did the math), I have never had the flu. Doesn't mean I won't get it. But it's not like it's an annual thing for me obviously.
There's a million other things that are worse. Do I pass on second hand smoke? No. Do I cough without covering my mouth? No. Do I wash my hands with soap often? Yes. Do I drive with alcohol in my system? No.
If I were to get the flu, I would have the priviledge of saying home isolated. Yes, I realize germs can be passed prior, but I think the overall chances of me infecting a person with a compromised system is just crazy low.
I asked at the hospital and they said they weren't even giving flu shots until 10/1. I'm annoyed that I have to make a separate trip or wait for my 6 week checkup now based on a few days. (I was discharged on the 27th.). Grr.

are you a hermit? do you live by yourself? Do you never go into public, ever?
This is timely as I got mine today! The lady was great! My arm isn't sore at all. I'm wondering if I should make DH get one as we are seeing his mom for the holidays and she is going through chemo.

Exactly. I have a compromised immune system and have a increased chance at death from the flu.
