Wow. I had no idea people took the flu shot so seriously. I thought it was an optional thing. If you don't want to get the flu this year come get the vaccine; if not, no harm no foul. I didn't realize skipping the vaccine makes you a drain on society who is pushing chemo patients closer to death by sharing a Target cart.
The flu is rampant. Until it's a one-time shot like polio delivered in childhood, we can't expect to protect everyone from it. Look at this thread--- mists, shots, different release dates, international travel, busy schedules, and the flu is already going around. Lots of barriers to minimizing risk for others. Unless you're a healthcare provider, IMO it's really just to minimize the risk to yourself and your family.
I hope you all get your kids the HPV shots (and get it yourself if you're young enough) so that you do your part for society to keep others from potentially getting cervical cancer. That is much more serious than the flu.
And yes, I got my flu shot, but only because my job made me. I'd probably skip it otherwise. And I do get the flu pretty much every year. Sorry, society.

well that was quite the crazy rant
It seemed like everyone piled on the 2 people who opt out of the flu shot.
I asked at the hospital and they said they weren't even giving flu shots until 10/1. I'm annoyed that I have to make a separate trip or wait for my 6 week checkup now based on a few days. (I was discharged on the 27th.). Grr.

The flu is serious. Otherwise healthy people die from it every year. It really must makes me question someone's ability to be rational if someone who can get one does not. And it makes me think the person is either obtuse or just an asshole.

I think I will trust my doctor's opinion before a random internet person.

I'm going to need to see some research that shows that the flu shot is able to control outbreaks of the flu across large regions (i.e., states, nations... hell, even one single elementary school or hospital) with annual vaccination exactly as it is administered right now. If that were its intended use, administration of the flu shot would be standardized and mandatory like vaccinations given in childhood.
I don't argue that it's nice of people to get the flu shot in order to reduce the risk of transmission to others, but the flu strains are always evolving, and the shot simply reduces your risk of getting the flu. It is not foolproof. And it is not meant to be a society-wide solution to protect the immunocompromised. It's to help YOU, this year, not get the latest and greatest strain of flu.
We can disagree, but calling me "obtuse or just an asshole" is uncalled for.

Does anyone know if there is any difference in effectiveness between the standard flu shot and the new one they introduced this year that involves a teeny tiny needle?
My office is giving out the traditional ones starting Monday, but if they are equally effective I will go to CVS and get the one with the teeny tiny needle instead. I hate needles.
And of course I understand that if everyone gets the flu shot, we as a society will be better off because there will be less flu. I just think we're a long way from that as far as practical application of the flu vaccine at this point in time, so I don't see why getting on individuals for their choices is necessary.
When there is a shortage of vaccines, I bet you guys run and take them away for yourselves at the expense of young children, elderly and the sick.
Now this is just obnoxious. What is your point here, other than to be petty and rude? BTW, you never answered my question re: who are the "professionals" cautioning against it.

Why would a hospital wait until 10/1 to give them out??? They are too late now... IheartCosmos is now spreading it and we are going to be like the movie Contagion!

reread your first sentence. You answered your own question.

My last 2 doctors did not "caution against it". They simply stated that in their opinion, I did not need to get a flu shot. It's simple. Bash them all you want.
In all seriousness, I think it's great that so many are getting the shot. But bashing those who don't seems crazy over the top, especially for someone like me who doesn't deal with masses of people and has never once had the flu in my entire life.

Funny how many MMer's say to never trust the government and then later say the government is the most reliable source on how we care for our bodies. So which is it?
I got one for the first time since childhood last year because we started TTC and the flu can be bad for a pregnant women. I got this year's two weeks ago. No, I've never had the flu before but getting the flu shot doesn't do any harm so why not get it?
It has caused harm in some people.
I'm honestly not trying to debate this. I am fine with people getting the flu shot. That's great. But I am not that fine with people bashing those healthy adults who choose not to.
I don't mean to be rude. I just don't understand people who do not believe in vaccines for communicable diseases. Either you don't believe the huge about of research indicating that vaccines do reduce mortality rates and serious morbidity issues or you just don't care.

All vaccines are not created equal. I can assure you that my DD gets her vaccines on the dot. The medical professionals I talk with agree that it's vital. Yet the same ones do not necessarily agree that a flu shot for a healthy adult is vital.

ding ding ding
that is not the case, regardless of what you think.
THe vaccination rate in Ontario is 30%. It is optional and free. The Ontario government thinks it is so important to increase this rate for them to save money on hospitalizations, for the people - to save lives, that they are allowing pharmacists to get certified to give the vaccine. I would assume that is why pharmacists can do it in most states. To increase accessibility. Because it is super important.
You can die from the flu. I dont know the exact rate of hospitalization or death but there is also lost work product (this is why chessie who never takes a vacation is shocking me with her refusal to get a shot) the risk of death from the shot is much much much much less. I am immunocompromised. I work in a store. You would be surprised the amount of people you come into contact with. I bet at least one person at your work has HIV or has a spouse getting chemo. Maybe you hate everyone?
