I watched the first episode. And I do not get the love. It shows just how abusive this sport is.
The kids all seem like they have great stories, but it seems like the coach is not great. I read up a bit more on it, and there are instances where she has them train while injured and such. It just seems wrong to glamorize this “family” dynamic when it’s not super healthy for the kids who are pretty vulnerable.
She does. There’s a scene in which one of the guys got hurt during an all star competition. She explicitly said do not cheer the next day. Do not do it. And he did. He didn’t listen. At practice on the following Monday he was in so much pain, but she made him work anyway. I get it, if you’re ok performing injured for someone else, you’re ok doing it here.
My MIL was going through some bins in her closet. One was a first aid bin. She found some sort of ointment/cream from 1994. I was with her when this happened last summer. She also moved to a new house about 5 years ago. You would think that it would have been tossed well before the move🤷🏻♀️.
@princessbubbleyum , Yeah, I think the documentary team did a great job letting Gabi's family hang themselves. I felt so sorry for her on the day she was in the library and just hung up on them.
And I was so sad about Lexi, and I so hope that Morgan finds a direction too.
The shot of La'Darius brother watching them at the championship with the tears rolling down his cheek was such a great documentary shot.
I also wish people would cut down on laminating things. You can’t recycle it if it’s laminated.
I’ve been thinking about this too. My area has no recycling, so even paper isn’t getting recycled. Is it better to laminate my activities and use them for years, or use paper activities for a week or two but then they’re trashed.
I used to laminate soooooo much stuff. Trying to rethink.
I hear you! When things are laminated they last longer for sure. I found dry erase pockets at target last summer and I’ve been putting my math games in them. I just keep all the games in the pocket and hopefully will still be able to use them next year.
I used to ask for ziplocks for student book bags. Now I use canvas book bags. I haven’t asked for plastic bags in ages. I also use cloth bags that I use for my small groups. In the bags I put an eraser, expo marker and some post its. I can reuse the bags. We can also recycle the markers.
I cannot wear contacts. They get too dry and every time I blink they rotate. I tried several kinds. I prefer glasses. I don’t think I’ll ever try contacts again.
I agree with the rec to take a ferry ride. Such a fantastic views and a cool experience if you’ve never done a ferry. The San Juan Islands look gorgeous and we would have done that if we’d had time our last visit. My sister lives in the Seattle area so we spend much of our visits in her suburb. Also Kerry Park has great city views and is a quick stop if you’re in the city. My kids also had fun spending the day at Lake Washington, but that’s kind of far out in Kirkland if you won’t otherwise be in the area.
The Uwajimaya market is fun to visit and your kids might enjoy all the fun Japanese candies and cutesy trinkets they sell. We also ate at a dumpling restaurant that was tasty and a fun experience, but I’m forgetting the name. Have fun! I think the only drawback of that area is that there’s SO many gorgeous and neat things to see and do that it becomes hard to narrow them down!
This is a little know park just down the way from Kerry park. The views are amazing!
The coach should simply just help them change the order of the lane. I don’t understand why they keep saying no. Or just tell the lane everyone is leaving 10 seconds after the person in front of you and that would spread everyone out.
Ferry ride from Seattle to any of the Islands. Whidbey (has an old military base that's fun to explore- Ft Casey), any of the San Juans etc.
Vashon Island is really cute and might be a nice short day trip. You could even do it In half of a day. Take the water taxi from downtown to west Seattle and then i think you can take the water taxi shuttle to the Vashon island ferry.
Why doesn’t your daughter go before her? Clearly she’s faster. Has your daughter said anything? Can she leave the wall 10 seconds after the other girl instead of 5 seconds? Can someone switch lanes? Let them figure it out, but give your daughter some things to try.
I usually take unisom. I can fall asleep quickly but I tend to wake up and then not be able to fall asleep. I try not to take it all of the time, but it helps me sleep so soundly.
I had one every three years when I was in school for a 504. The school is the one that called my parents though. This was a long time ago so maybe its changed now?
Yes. I had a parent recently make a request. At first the school psych said no. I showed her all of the data I collected and then she changed her mind.
interesting! I don’t know anyone who has been declined testing and the school told me they were required to test, but maybe I misunderstood or maybe our school district does it differently. Good to know!
It sounds like there needs to be adequate data and interventions to necessitate an eval. Ive never had a parent request an eval before.
Also, it sounds like you are unsure if the school will do it or not. They are required by law (assuming this is a public school) to provide testing upon written request. If you aren't sure who to request it from I would email the teacher and CC the guidance counselor and principal. They have to do testing within 45 school days and have a meeting with you to discuss results and potential services within 60 (I think) school days. So, they have to do it. However, it may not be a complete neuro psych evaluation - they may just test for the specific areas you are concerned about.
They are actually only required to respond. They can, upon reviewing data, decline to test.

As a teacher we can only say things like “have you thought about seeing a pediatrician for this?” I have a student this year in which we had to talk to parents about seeing either a neurpsych or neurologist. In no way did we say that they have to go, only that they consider.
I honestly don’t think you can make a school pay for this type of appointment, unless the school messed something up on their end and said you NEED to go or did something wrong on the evaluation end.
If you do go and get an evaluation and there is a diagnosis make sure you give it to the school so they can get started on the iep process.
I would definitely want to know what is happening. I don’t go out to recess, we have recess monitors so I’m often the last to know what is happening outside. And I also can’t read minds. I want to be kept in the loop. If I hear from parents, kids, or recess monitors then I can help kids navigate problem solving and friendships.
2 hour late start for school today. I wish it was just closed. It’s sooo icy and cold out. Also, I just want to stay home! Dh’s district is closed for the second day in a row.
I don’t technically get a bonus but I get a stipend every year. DH gets one too. In the past we have bought furniture, saved a potion or used for a vacation.
I mean, I do sometimes make my children pay for things. It gets the point across. But I missed the OP, so, I dunno.
Do you make an 8-year-old pay for wiping her nose with her hand and then leaving the water running for 2 hours after she washes her hand?
Did you know that 8 is old enough to never wipe your nose with your hand? (I would LOVE to hear what second and third grade teachers have to say about that.)
So much nose picking and hand wiping the nose in second grade. So, so, so much.
Friday: off Saturday: hiit class Sunday: my gym has an open gym in the afternoon and you can use their equipment. I did my own hiit workout. It was hard when no one was telling me what to do! That’s why I love the classes so much. It’s a good option when we can’t make it on the morning for whatever reason.
My goal this week is to meet my friend for a swim workout. I can’t remember the last time we did a workout together.
My 15 year old is as absent minded as a 90 year old man. He just has a lot on his mind and gets distracted. If we made him owe us money each time he did something wrong, his whole savings account would be wiped clean. We have to tell him all of the time to turn the basement light off when he leaves. But we forget sometimes too.
