And I'm feeling some type of way about defending someone who makes those type of statements.
I see how it was offensive but I'm surprised by the vitriol? Really?
I think in a lot of posters' minds, he's fairly representative of white middle-age men who see themselves as totally non-racist, absolutely not sexist, but are incapable of placing themselves in such a situation. Not even beginning to try to imagine. And even though that's not even close to the actual experience of feeling such ignorant disparagement, he/ they refuse to even mentally go THERE. And that's what's disappointing (or at least was for me).

I read the thread on black women's relationship to feminism today. I know it's 9 months late and all. Allies who were interested in that thread might enjoy Audre Lorde's "Transformation of Silence Into Language and Action” and "Black Women, Hatred, and Anger." I am not an expert on Lorde's belief system (I know her poetry better than her non-fiction), so I'm not sure if that thread meshes with her whole body of work, but I kept thinking of those 2 essays when I read the posts.
Ironically, there was a post from reeve in it where he stated he was humbled and felt sad and ignorant in the face of what he'd read. And that, reeve, if you're lurking, is how I know you can do better than you did last night.
Random tangent, but I finished a great book on Intersectional Feminism. It's called The Sisters Are All Right: Changing The Broken Narrative of Black Women in America.

I will freely admit that I am don't read as many posts as I "should" for this but I'm a little disturbed at a long time regular being run off the board over this.
was what he said totally misguided? yes. condescending? yes. was it ill-intentioned? no.
he's not Dev, ffs. i've never had an interaction with him that was anything but respectful even when we totally disagreed on a topic.
I am just catching up, but he has done this at least twice before. He'll be back. He was not run off of anything.

I'm also (not) surprised that a number did not chime in during this thread. Ok. Not so surprised.
Trump - over it, not interested Then it became time to turn on each other because we're bored - not interested.
I don't see why you're not surprised.
Not even going to finish reading.
I know @koko said this already, but you are fucking wrong here. It was not turning on each other. It was calling out a racist statement so pound sand on that front. Sadly, I wish such a thing did surprise me online. It does not. Please learn, though, read and learn.
I also think it's kind of weird. I can't picture a racist democrat. As the party divide had grown, racial disparity had definitely become a significant issue on the left. So when I think of a "racist" Dem, I think dumb shit Biden said. I can't imagine someone one the left spewing shit similar to trump. I'm glad these aren't either or issues.

It's a must read, for anyone who is alive. Lurkers, and deactivators included.
pixy0stix , Can you please add this book to one of the sticky threads? I forgave you last night, BTW.
Massive, massive brag- the author guest spoke in my gender class last semester. She's awesome, and so is the book!!!
ETA: I just invited her over. I hope you all don't mind.
That said, my question (I've definitely been reading) is: are we doing ourselves a disservice if we keep talking about Trump's supporters as the Olds? I keep seeing young white men (and some women) at his rallies on television. Saying "it's the olds" makes people feel somewhat better about his racism, maybe ("it's generational") but ignores the bigger problem, I think. Do you think so many young white men are drawn to Trump because of the loss of blue collar jobs in the US?
I'm just all shell shocked. I reopened the thread and poured a drink and am reeling. I'm shocked by certain views, sad about how other posters were made to feel, relieved certain views were walked back. and all 'we still love each other right??'

I'd hate to vote for someone who had crappy environmental policies.
I'm beginning to realize there are a lot more covert racists on the left than I ever imagined.
I mean in our current climate. Thigh shit like this is always flooring to me. I know historically dems haven't always been on the right side of race relations. But I always think of that as back to Lincoln. Not more recent.

There are quite a few of them in areas like the PNW, unfortunately. Very liberal, but very white. I found out the hard way that a very liberal friend (no longer, of course) was very racist and not so quiet about it. They're out there.

It's not race related, but you have to remember that Kim Davis was a democrat.

Honestly when I look at dates I'm always floored. I constantly forget how recent it is in our history it was that we finally realized that black & white citizens should have the same legal rights. It feels like such an archaic notion to be as recent as it is.
I'm having to catch up again and I'm at page 16. I am going on record as saying I regret nothing I said to reeve. He knows better, he had to know what was coming. sorrynotsorry.

This is a vast, drastic mischaracterization of what happened here.
Yes, I was...out of line. I should have kept reading rather than get into the fray. My response made me realize I do not have the energy for real threads on this board any more and quite honestly haven't in awhile.
I'm going to drop controversial shit and run. I have some numbers and thoughts on race and climate change:
There are about 6000 black homicides in the US each year. To put that into context, that means that someone's loved one is killed every 1.5 hours. Around the clock. All year round. Black victimization rates are 2 - 6 times higher than white victimization rates. And it looks like rates have held pretty steady since 2000 so don't get all hopeful or anything that the US is in a hurry to become not-racist anytime soon.
But climate change could also potentially kill people. Potentially vast numbers of people. For example, about half of the population of Bangladesh live on the river delta which is basically at sea level. The population of Bangladesh is 150 million so that would be a shit-ton of refugees. Humanity can't even pull its head of of its ass to deal with 5 million refugees from Syria humanely. If 99% of Bangladeshis survived the displacement and chaos that would be 1.5 million deaths. So climate change is potentially also a matter of life and death for many people.

I really hate that people keep coming in here and saying, in effect, "well, yeah it sucks that black people are dying, but climate change affects millions of people!"
If a racist asshole who was passionate about climate change came on board, I still wouldn't vote for his racist ass because it's going to take a hell of a lot more than a presidential candidate who says, "yay vegsnism, boo fossil fuels!" to fix what we've broken, but that same person who believes brown-skinned people don't matter could make things so, so much worse than they are for millions of already disenfranchised people.
And the idea that democrats can't be racist - lolololololol. Fuck, yeah, they are. Racists come in a lot of shapes and sizes and they are definitely not limited to the conservative party. Please remember racism is NOT just about using the n-word and chanting at a Trump rally.
