"The point that I was making was not that Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't, but she's a typical white person. . ."
Yeah, this is TOTALLY COMPARABLE to Trump's comments. TOTALLY.
I seriously get why black people say they are tired of white feelings.
Yup. Look at this thread. READ it. I don't give two fucks because mofos don't give a flying fuck about us.
But, y'all can waltz in and tell us to do something about OUR community and not take ownership of idiots like Trump having a platform. So, Imma be in this thread and say all the shit blacks feel and need to say because Imma treat it like Festivus up in this bitch.
And voting for a known racist, especially one trying to set us back to Germany in the earlier part of the century will make the societal changes on me so
bad nothing else will matter. Sorry but I am pretty disappointed in you.
I'm not saying I would vote for Trump, because I don't believe even if he was saying he'd do something about climate change, he wouldn't be able to do it because he'd alienate the rest of the world.
"You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent."
So in other words, he's a typical (older) white person* who often falls back on outdated stereotypes to get a laugh. Not excusing what he said, it definitely makes me cringe but it is in no way comparable to campaigning on proposing policy (concentration camps for Muslims, etc) that relies heavily on racist ideas and beliefs. The difference between the two is quite noticeable.
Why are you trying to talk about this? Stop trying to make this happen. Â We are talking about Donald Trump and your own complicity with racism, both open and systemic.
Because I was asked for examples. I could go on, but it doesn't matter. I am not going to play anymore in this thread.
I think you are all intelligent women on this board. I read a lot, learn a lot, agree and disagree a lot. I think we can all agree that we will disagree on anything political most of the time. I'm okay with that as I am sure you are all as well.
Well, perhaps we can all agree that we hope Donald Trump does not become president.
Given that you hope he will not be president, what are you doing to help prevent it? Are you planning to vote in the primary? Will you consider abstaining from voting in the Pres slot but voting down ticket if he is, in fact, the nominee? That sounds a loud and clear message in a way abstaining doesn't.
I think if a candidate came out that was 100% committed to doing something, anything, about climate change, but was racist... I'd vote for them.
Good to know that melting glaciers trumps Black Lives Matter. Because - my black ass will always be black and this right here is why we have entire discussions about inter-sectional feminism. Because in the grand scheme of life - there will always be more pressing issues than ensuring that the centuries of institutional racism are broken down.
*writes it down for future reference*
And y'all wonder why black folks don't trust shit folks have to say. Right here folks.
And yes, I'm salty as hell about this statement. Because before I'd vote for a Dem nominee, I'd ensure that the person was not racist and was pro-choice. I don't pick the least of these things because they are the least important. But, hey, rights are only important to the oppressed, so carry on.
I obviously don't have the same personal stake in BLM as you do, but 100 percent understand this and am nodding with you. As a woman, I would not vote for someone who was awesome on the economy/climate change/insert any policy here if the person believed in the subjugation of women. What good does a great economy/environment/insert other thing here do me if I'm not alive or don't have the ability to take part in it? It's a no-brainer to me that the same applies to race.

If you can't see the difference between your examples and the horrible things that have come out of Trump's mouth, then it is probably best if you do go away. Disagreeing about political issues is one thing. Supporting a racist candidate (even if you have to hold your nose to do so) is another matter entirely. There is nothing to "discuss" when it comes to racism.
I'm not saying I would vote for Trump, because I don't believe even if he was saying he'd do something about climate change, he wouldn't be able to do it because he'd alienate the rest of the world.
I'm probably digging a hole for myself now.
*SUCKS TEETH*
Pretty Much.
I figured. FTR, I wasn't thinking about Trump level racism, but I know that doesn't help matters.
Hell, y'all, we got typical white folks shit that happens on this board. Let me tell you what it is. It's the thought, "I'm doing great work on behalf of the poor, downtrodden POC! Look at how awesome I am." Then when someone says - look, you didn't bother to really engage POC with this work, y'all get butthurt and run off to the corner.
It's telling me that climate change is more important than folks ending up dead in police custody and being a racist ain't that high on the hierarchy of being a bad public servant - because these are the people we elect to create policy.
It's not recognizing that all black are a monolithic group and we have varied needs and voices.
The fuck? Who here voted for him? And that happened when he was president and he got ONE TERM and was soundly defeated.
I was only 16 14 but would have voted for him 10 times over. He was not defeated by Ronnie Raygun because of his Iran sanctions. Tell me tillie how were the Iranian sanctions racist? While you're at it you can tell me how the sanctions imposed as a national security tool throughout the history of our country against foreign nations who are our enemies are racist. Or do these things only magically become the equivalent of Trump's racist hate speech because a Democratic president does them?
Yeah, this is TOTALLY COMPARABLE to Trump's comments. TOTALLY.

Yes. I AM AN ANGRY BLACK WOMAN.
Only slightly related: I think I've become more militant in my feminism in the last couple of years, especially the last year after having to put up with my misogynist asshole BIL at Christmas, and in doing so, I think I've gained a MUCH greater appreciation for what black people (on this board and elsewhere) have been saying about being tired of white feelings.
I have no doubt that I was guilty of having the white feels in the past (and probably continue to do so to some extent because nobody's perfect), but I think I get it a lot more. I am TIRED of having to dance around men's feelings. There was a huge blowup in my music nerd community recently over misogyny, and after I pointed out that there is a problem with sexism in the community, all the men needed to be reassured that they are not sexists. It's annoying because it turns the problem into being about THEM and it also focuses on an inherent quality (being a sexist) instead of actions (saying and doing things that are sexist or have sexist implications).
And that was yet another light bulb moment for me in regards to black folks dealing with white feels. IT'S NOT ABOUT US. (Yes, I realize the irony of making a whole post about me in this context.) To be sure, there are people who are just flat out racists, but not every person who says or does something racist is A RACIST to his or her core. We all have subconscious biases and we all say and do things that convey meaning, sometimes unintended. So instead of running around, fretting, "Does Mary think I'm a racist/sexist/homophobe/whatever?" just fucking listen and evaluate your actions and words and try to get better!

You know how you can help make this not happen? By not voting for him. Ever. In any election. H2H!

I think you would be more comfortable posting somewhere else. May I direct you to the comments section on the National Review?
Honestly, tillie, I think you need a break from politics, including this board.

I'd sideye the fuck out of anyone who voted for a candidate that said a woman should be barefoot and pregnant at home and to STFU, so yeah, I get the POC on the board being pissed off.
the history of this country is so bleak in terms of racism and I feel like it is improving, slowly of course but improving. Donald trump as president is like throwing it all away. Even the idea of him as president and his support is a kick in the face to everyone who has given their lives to fight racism. It's sickening. Nothing any candidate could offer could make up for that
This is such a big issue, and I know there's no way I can explain myself in a way that is satisfactory to anyone right now. However, we are already dealing with one war that is directly attributed to climate change. A war where the refugees are spurring great shows of racism in many countries, not just our own, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. In the next 29 years, unless something drastic happens, we - all of us - are going to be in great danger. I can't separate that out, because I want the whole of the human race to survive. From macro down to micro, the environment plays a role in everything, from the treatment of women to minority equality.
Saying it's JUST about the environment isn't what I'm worried about.

I can't imagine putting any issue ahead of human rights when voting. The environment is important, the economy is important.
But none of it matters when we still have people in this country being treated like second class citizens or worse. When people are being murdered by police for the color off their skin, when people are denied a medical procedure or murdered for providing it or trying to access it, so don't see how anything else could be more important in voting.
To be sure, there are people who are just flat out racists, but not every person who says or does something racist is A RACIST to his or her core. This is exactly why I'm not at offended by the phrase "typical white person". We can't fix this if we don't stop and evaluate our thoughts, words and actions. We do need to stop acting like typical white people. Sometimes confronting the truth hurts.
I'd sideye the fuck out of anyone who voted for a candidate that said a woman should be barefoot and pregnant at home and to STFU, so yeah, I get the POC on the board being pissed off.
Yeah, I'm pissed off. And before I take anything back, I'll add more to it. One thing I'm not going to do is let shit slide. I feel some kinda way about Trump and his racism. Plus, I watched Hotel Rwanda last night and you know what stuck out to me the most - the rhetoric. The fact that these folks used radio to agitate and have folks kill their NEIGHBORS.
Think about it. I have Muslim neighbors. The thought that they would need to be registered as "Good Muslims." W.TA.F. That's where we're at. We've created such a climate of fear that we'd actually vote for the guy who wants to register Muslims. THEY DID THAT SHIT IN NAZI GERMANY. We shipped Japanese off to internment camps.
Did we conveniently forget our history here? This is a nation built upon the slaughter and enslavement of people. We can't go back to that. We can't. And to say you'd take a racist means you've thought NOTHING of repeating the past.
Why are you trying to talk about this? Stop trying to make this happen. We are talking about Donald Trump and your own complicity with racism, both open and systemic.

You were asked for evidence that Democrats - either on this board or in general - would vote for an unabashed racist, misogynist, and xenophobe for president if he or she were a Democrat. The reason you're being asked is because you're the only one who has admitted she would vote for Trump in the general election should he become the Republican nominee.
Nothing that you have offered is evidence that Barack Obama, Joe Biden, or Jimmy Carter are unabashed racists, misogynists, and xenophobes.
