Here's the thing - I can't make anyone post here who no longer wants to or who doesn't feel heard or respected and bones, I wouldn't want to do that even if I could. It's an uneven playing field and I can only imagine how it must feel to have the pressure of being one of the few, having to respond to post after post with little to no backup. I think it'd be unfair to ask anyone to continue down that torturous path. I certainly wouldn't have the stamina were roles reversed.
I'm certainly a passionate person and while I like to think I'm usually level headed and capable of polite discourse, I recognize that I'm only human and sometimes my passion gets the better of me. We all have our moments. But I still fundamentally believe that most hold opinions that are closer together than society would have us believe. People will always disagree with the method, but our goals are usually the same. And that's why I will continue to listen and try to find commonality in even the most unlikely of places.
Seriously, my whole post was not intended to be some "smackdown" or whatever. I mean, Pol Pot and Dickinson Cheney? That shit is funny.
This board isn't what it used to be. And it's fine. Shit changes. But I'm allowed to be a little eyerolly that we get paged in threads like this. Because it's kind of implied that all we're good for is disputing the ultimate crazy.
Take it or leave it. I am truly done getting pissed off.
Look, I said it was stupid to page you to do circus tricks in here, and a bunch of people agreed.
I did not read your previous post as TIC, especially when you brought up people who don't feel like posting here at present as evidence of the board's suckiness.
The board is angry. They are angry because they routinely hear terrible things said about themselves, about women, about people of color, about religion, on a national and very public stage. And people here don't understand why other folks would encourage and support that ideology. So they are angry. I don't know what to say beyond that.
That's fine. Take me at my word or don't. I'm not trying to win any contests.
The fact that KateAggie is being called ridiculous, in spite of her being summoned, makes it evident that non-liberal perspectives on this board aren't missed.
The fact that she is reconciled to that, yet offered her asked-for opinion anyway, gets a big "good for you" from me.
The fact that exactly one poster in this thread has observed why no Rs post anymore is... telling.
The board is left. We (the old non-lib regulars) all get it. And I use "we" because I also have been one who is only summoned/tagged to get my non-left opinion when it's desired. (Which has been what is is, but I finally decided I didn't care to be a consultant when any other non-left political opinion I might offer spontaneously will either meet opinions which stereotype all non-liberals as idiots/racists/extremists or will be met with anything from one-liner snark to WsOT with chest-bumping included). I, like Katie, usually just engage with the non-political threads because non-liberal ideas aren't welcome on here 99% of the time. Props to Tef for sticking it out.
That's the board you want. You've got it. The non-libs have other places we can and do engage, and amazingly we even discuss with other liberals and have mind-broadening conversations. I miss when this board used to roll that way, and now it's about paging a conservative or even an indie to get some outside perspective. But now that this is what the board is, I laugh at the surprise over tillie being a lone representative of the GOP and lo-and-behold, she might vote for Trump.
Back to giving no fucks.
Off to the Festivus thread where I get to air out my hatred of the term #notextremists.
Ok, it seems you want to talk to me.
1. I paged you because I like you and because I know you feel strongly about 3rd party votes. I am sorry to have made you feel as though I have not valued you in other contexts. I thought my relationship with you was such that you would understand why I was paging you, and I apologize for assuming to know you like that.
2. I feel that I was talked to like I am a fucking idiot and completely dismissed on several occasions by conservative posters when I was not in full thrash mode and when I was was bothering to be thoughtful, and I will name names because I don't want to be passive aggressive: y4m and origami. I'm not tagging them because they've made it clear they don't want to be here. So there is blame to go around for the changes on the board.
3. Thus, the phrase #notextremist was born on one of those occasions. I felt that since a serious reply had earned me nothing, then I would respond with sarcasm and no serious replies about the topic of Republican male discussion of women. I never meant for it to go viral around here; it was meant to be my personal brand of bitchiness. And I don't have the kind of relationship with origami to be like, "dude, wth?"
4. I had a recent heart to heart of sorts with one of the posters who attends smarter/nicer-people camp with you on your other board. For her, I vowed to moderate my tone more. So I haven't posted about the topics I care most about because I don't want to get angry or fire others up. I haven't posted articles open on my iPad because I think they will just fuel the fire. I tried today to act with sense. It seems I lost on that count, too, unfortunately.
5. Ok, so people have the board they want? IDK. The same way, I guess, that Republicans have the party they want now.

I admit, maybe I wouldn't actually participate since I need a board break in the new year anyway (not forever, and not due to anything that happened), but I don't like that there is another board out there that many of us (or maybe just a few of us...?) aren't privy to and it's being dangled here right in front of our noses almost in a "ha ha ha, you can't play with the cool kids!" way. I certainly don't feel that every liberal here has been a dick to all the conservatives but whatever. It is what it is.

That makes no sense.
Racism is bad. Climate change is worse. Because when we are all drowning or melting, the question of race becomes moot.
Having said that, Pixy made the mistake that you often see in debates about torture. The so called ticking bomb argument. Its a mistake because the set up is inherently faulty. With torture, its that there will never be a situation where a) a bunch of lives are are stake and b) we have the one person who knows how to stop it and c) we know that torture will work and d) that it will work in time to stop the bomb. If we knew all of those things, then torture would not only be okay, you could quite easily argue that it is actually the moral thing to do - one persons pain saves many lives. But that situation will never happen.
Its the same with what Pixy said. If there was a) a candidate that could actually stop the problem of climate change just by being elected and b) that stopping of climate change would be instant and prevent the immediate destruction of the human race c) it would save the lives of the entire planet regardless of race then d) I think we could all vote for that candidate even if he was a racist douche bag.
But that will never be the case. Its an intellectual / philosophical exercise that is fine in that realm, but it absolutely falls to pieces in any real life scenario.
ETA and we all know pixy isn't pro racism. So theres that too.

Said from your perch of privilege.
Maybe. But as an intellectual exercise, I would rather be saved by an anti white shit head than die in the huge tornado. Again, would never happen.

As the oppression of the white male would never happen. It's easy to say from where you sit intellectually when you've never had to fear for your life when pulled over by the police.

You know what? How can you not get this? Honestly. You have seen every POC on this board discuss these issues AT LENGTH. How can you not get it?
I'm just gobsmacked that you cannot see what you just said and how offensive it is to every POC. And people point it out and you just double the fuck down.

I really think it is unfair to say that only one person defended R's in this thread. Or that people on a regular do not say that the attitude of many on this board is what drove R's away. Or that we don't understand why R's don't engage. And that we would think this board would be better if it wasn't so one-sided. Come on now. I know I alone have said it numerous times. It still doesn't make any R want to enter discussions. So honestly what is the point.
I think the ship has sailed, honestly. It is nice that there are still thoughts of being nice to people that aren't liberal?Dem?whatever, but the ship of welcoming and not "you are (not you, X poster, but all other Rs/Conservatives) crazy/a-holes/whatever" is long gone. Being one against many is never fun. Never. So, why would any want to enter? I am just rambling, but I guess I just wanted to make a point. I post, but far less than I did before. Some of that is the job, some is just, eh, I can only take so many snarky/veiled comments (I would name some if I could remember, but I am on Christmas vacation and my brain capacity is bill, thank goodness, right now) even if they are not directed at me.

Of course climate change is worse for you. It's not your ass who needs to worry about a traffic stop ending in your death. White folks walk in Target with guns and live to tell about it. My ass would be dead. See Tamir Rice.
And yes it's a ticking time bomb for a nation that routinely reminds me and the got.dayum. President of our fucking place.
I will stand by the assertion that it is correct to call this privileged ass thought process out. No, you will never tell me that a melting ice cap is more important than my right to live. Because that ice cap is still melting while a list of black people lay dead at the hands of institutionalized racism.
Have all the seats. To choose climate change over human rights of ludicrous. They are not mutually exclusive which is my earlier point.
But again, we'll let the issues of black folks be cast to the side until we're deemed worthy of your just cause.

Yeah, what the fuck is this? And there's some other board? LOLOL that this "used to be different." No, it fucking didn't. We did this in about 2008/2009 as well, back on the fucking Nest, when there was the May 06 board for some people and the February 05 board or something for some others, etc.
This board has always been like this. There is nothing new under the sun.
It was different. The stuff that is tolerated now wouldn't have been at the start. The Cons aren't pulling this out of their asses. Also there have been questionable things said about black folk's. The only difference is we roll deep and ain't finna let shit go.
No. Im out. I am, after all, a man. And white. Anything I say will be privileged mansplaining. I am simply unable to comprehend these topics because I am so high in the sky on my wonder cloud of privilege, and so white my skin is like the snow.
And again, I'm REALLY upset here because there is this continual head patting of black folks to just wait.
We've been beyond patient and every time someone tells us what's far more important than our right to be seen as human.
I am TIRED. DEAD TIRED of trying to make sure my daughter is seen as a 13 yr old and not a potential teen mom.
I am TIRED of people being surprised that I have multiple degrees and needing to prove myself to people because I can't possibly be smart enough since all black folks are dumb.
I am TIRED of watching white folks clutch purses in elevators because my docile black husband looks like a menance because he's 5'10" and 225lbs.
I am TIRED of white folks telling me that other issues are more important. I am TIRED of explaining BLM.
I tired of it and every time I turn around I find shit like this thread to remind that so called enlightened folks are still pontificating on empty assumptions of issue importance.
No sir. Not today and for Damn sure not tomorrow either.

Wish granted. No hard feelings from me
Have a great Christmas!
Dude, please don't go all condescending and martyr-out. Listen. LISTEN to what people are saying to your comments. Please.
Come on, it's not that hard to get. It's difficult to concentrate on what the earth is going to look like or if there are enough resources for people in 20, 50, 100, whatever years when you're worried your teenaged child will take a walk down to the corner market and never come back because someone misinterpreted his placating gestures for aggressive ones. It's Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and some people can't get past the bottom rung - safety.
Eta: I feel like I should include the caveat that that's not to say I'm not extremely alarmed about the environment, I absolutely am. But I understand why that isn't everyone's first consideration. It just can't be, for reasons I spoke of above.

That's a great plan. Don't listen to what anyone has to say. That's a great way to handle the situation.
