i have to wonder if the PMs are being relayed fairly. was elle really asked to apologize to a goddamn piece of poultry?
or was the flippancy with regards to two completely different Latino cultures pointed out as a micro-aggression?
if the former, the poster in question is either trolling or a nut.
if the latter, it's a shame that they are being teased for being honest about something that they find offensive, especially given the possibility that the poster is a member of one of the two cultures mentioned. it's not really for elle (or any of us) to decide what someone feels is a micro-aggression to them personally.
This is an instance where I think we do need to see the damn receipts! I thought elle was saying the PMs indicated that she should apologize to V, which had me confused.
Now if the PMs just pointed out that it was a micro-aggression and the PMer was offended, then that's a whole different story.
I am pretty sure being flippant about the culture is a microaggression.
I absolutely agree.
But the commentary about the chicken was in another post. Elle just mentioned that she thought it was amusing it kept popping up. She forgot what kind of chicken dish it was. Then v chimed in trying to be all cute about microagressions.
Absolutely 100% it is a microagression to be flippant or careless about where someone or their traditions or their food is from.
But I am fairly certain that's not what happened here.
To be completely honest, I do not know how Elle could have "misremembered" if the FUCKING CHICKEN was Cuban or Peruvian. I read a bit of the thread and clearly remember that it was Peruvian food they were talking about. (Was Cuban chicken even mentioned in that thread?)
Elle never said she "forgot" if it was Cuban or Peruvian.

I think it's the truth. There have been a lot of questions, which is fine. I think people have been trying to answer and have a conversation. That's great. But there really aren't clear defined rules for every scenario. I really don't know how else to explain it other than to say there is no clear flow chart for every situation.
uh oh, someone doesn't quite like your tone! Another chip on the old ML race thread bingo card. Hilarious.
And let's recall that Elle rolled in, wrong as a man thong, in the last big blowup. Is that the case here? I don't actually know, but I'll happily stir the pot anyway.

Look, elle , would you just apologize to SKP for something? She really needs it.
Fuck. Here we are in a thread that has gone on for 2 days which, at least to me, has said, "Hey. Fucking stop sitting on the sidelines and letting people get away with shit."

I honestly couldn't have told you what kind of chicken people were eating because that wasn't my takeaway from that thread. I skimmed a bunch of that thread and homed in on the inequality / racism piece. I didn't even realize chicken was a discussion piece until it came up here.
Now you know I get all heated up in threads about racism and I am sensitive to microagressions.
And had the gist of the thread been about Peruvian food and someone popped in all, "yeah, Cuban food is really delicious!" I'd be doing the side eye too.
However, I didn't see flippancy in her post. Just poor memory. (Although ordinarily I would have been like, "fuck, you're right. Totally different dishes, man. I'm sorry" the fact that it was v trying to mock microagressions, I might not have.)
Now if someone messaged her saying they were hurt by it and she blew them off rather than engaging in discussion, then that's another thing.

wrong as a man thong
I'm going to divert attention away from the motherfucking chicken for one second and thank you for giving me a new phrase that will horrify in conversation.
I can't believe that in a thread talking about much larger issues, someone has managed to turn the thread back to chicken.
tbf, it is not chicken. It's about saying basically cuban, Peruvian. ..all the same.the chicken is not the issue and when people, general, keep saying that, it is part of the bigger issue-not wanting to point out microagression
Ooooor sometimes a chicken is just a chicken, and someone wants to red herring the discussion away from the real issues. She's pissed off that people can't see her point. I can see it just fine, and I think she's chickenshit for turning the convo from the larger issue at hand to go on her own little crusade.
Because what she's really doing is saying that a convo about chicken is much more important than a convo about real live people who participate right here, right now on the board.
My comment was in reference to a CHICKEN. Chicken is a FOOD. It is not a PERSON. I confused cuisines, not ethnicities. Because chickens DO NOT HAVE ETHNICITIES. They are CHICKENS. If my huskies kill a chicken, they have not committed a hate crime.
This has got to be the most inane argument I have ever been dragged in to on here. Kirkette is my friend. I was reading a post that had been described on ML as including a threat by Kirkette to shoot Miso. So no, I was not paying attention to the chicken. I was skimming for Kirkette's posts, and I became more and more concerned as she became more and more distressed, and frankly, it was really discordant to see V and a poster I didn't know going on and on and on about chicken in the midst of that conversation.

Look, I have zero idea what v's intent was, but I do want to point out that the word "Peruvian" came up at least 15 times in the MMM flammables thread. It sounds absolutely nothing like Cuban, never mind if you honestly don't see the difference between Cuban and Peruvian chickens or people or don't know the difference between Fidel Castro and the Sendero Luminoso. But ripping on v was more important to you than correcting a simple mistake, so I don't know what to think about that. And since I don't know a damned thing about you, I am choosing to address this via PM instead of making a public post.
You know, sometimes a dumb thread is just a dumb thread. If this thread were an actual chicken, it would be like 2 pounds of gristle and tough, stringy meat. And that was at the beginning. The bones are clean, my friends. Bury them along with what's left of your dignity. Or just let go and embrace the current chicken discussion wholeheartedly.
I'm going to get myself run out of here, aren't I?

Elle said, "(someone is still messaging me insisting I apologize to either V or the chicken, BTW)."
Ok. So that's my point. No one PMed elle saying they were offended. They were saying she should apologize to V, which in my mind makes absolutely no sense.
So this is not the same as micro aggressions or someone of color being offended and elle needs to listen and not poke fun of it. Like I said, we don't all have the same point of view, so if someone PMed elle about being offended, then sure the nice thing for her to do would be to listen and try to understand. But that is not what happened. So I don't know why all this back and forth is happening.

You're taking what Elle said at face value. Who would say, "please apologize to either the chicken or to v" as if one or the other were equally acceptable?
The poster could very well have said she was offended. We don't know, but based on the quote that elle posted, it sounds like she may have been.

To be fair, in the very last post she sent, the woman said she herself was offended. But that didn't come up until her very last message to me, after I told her she was nuts for wanting me to apologize for confusing the chickens. Had she started there, and not with a rousing defense of V and the Cuban chicken, I would have reacted differently. I still do not know what the woman's background is, but obviously, a person being offended on her own behalf is quite different than being offended on behalf of V. Or a chicken. Or Fidel.
I, BTW, do not have a problem with V. But I stand by my view that it was discordant that she was going on and on about that chicken while Kirkette was obviously in real distress. We are all tone deaf sometimes. I certainly am. I am not saying she's a bad person or anything, it just struck me as odd. Like a guest raving to the hostess about how much she loves the turkey while her friend is visibly upset at the other end of the table.

I mean, come on, she has a point. And here you are acting like she's a crazy person for asking you to acknowledge that you made a mistake.

I don't think I have ever refused to acknowledge I made a mistake about the type of cuisine. But, I am fully capable of having made a mistake AND thinking it is ridiculous someone I don't know messaged me to lodge a complaint on behalf of V and/or the Cuban and Peruvian chickens.
