I am in 1700sf. At the max we had 2 adults, 2 kids and 6 cats (and a turtle). Right now we're at 1 adult, 2 kids, 3 cats and a dog. We were fine. What are you going to do with your kids if you decide you don't have enough room? Decisions, decisions!

2 adults 4 kids 1 dog
2500ish sf and 1/2 a finished basement that adds I don't know what. Hoping to finish the other half soon as a room for DH since that's really all that's missing
Currently 2 adults and 2 kids in 4300 ish square feet. Our old house was 2100 sq feet and that space would have been more than fine except it was allocated very unevenly.

Our primary is 3,000 square feet and it's too big. We only use about half of it. Our ski cabin is 1,500 square feet and it feels perfect. Our old house was 2,400 and it was also too big, so it think 1,500 is about right.
We keep buying houses that are too big because we need the yard space. We don't live in an area where you can have a big yard (or even a decent sized yard) without a disproportionately big house. Our cabin is on a 10K square foot lot and it's just absolutely perfect- everything on one level, huskies have lots of room to run and chase each other - but we can't live there full time because there's no jobs.
