Exactly.  She learned about this via email on the company servers, and now is the exact right time to make sure HR knows that stuff like that is unacceptable and won't be tolerated.  If this clown is stupid enough to broadcast his illegal discrimination, swift (and public) action should be taken.

No - there is nothing in this situation that would constitute an acceptable reason to fire someone.  It was sent out publicly - and it is illegal.  OP is well within her rights to make a fuss about this.  And I imagine her HR department will be horrified.
