Clearly we all need to run what we buy for our children through the ML approval process to be sure we aren't spending too much. Or spending too little (because those people don't love their children as much, DUH).
I have 3 "designer" purses that were all purchased used.
The designers are Coach, Michael Kors, and Kate Spade
Maybe I could have sprung for $350 instead of $150 to buy them, but then I got to buy $200 worth of other stuff with the money I saved.
I probably am not cool enough to be posting in this thread.
ETA: Also it never occurred to me to be embarrassed by this. I come from the kind of money that likes to brag about finding a good sale at Kohls, I guess.
ME TOO!!!!! I do a happy dance when I see I saved more than I spent.
Those dancers are hypnotizing, I can't stop watching.

Liking not just because I agree, but because it's been too long since that gif was used.
I feel like it's very new money to look down on used goods.
(To be clear, I am No Money).
I usually don't like to look at things in those terms, but no joke, as I was swimming, I was thinking, "that thread is so full of new money maddness".
You know where you find all the old money families/street name families , in our part of town? We hang out at the dollar store haggling prices. And trust, my street name family little ass was rocking used fur coats, all through out the 80s. Frugality is how you don't lose your damn estate, everyone knows that. It's like financial tip #2, after, "Be kind to everyone as you ascend up, because you'll surely meet them again, if you happen to fall down the social or corporate ladder".
It's like those pictures of how Hillary Clinton has been wearing the same Patagonia fleece in public since '95. Old money people are the ones driving the 20 year old Subarus and putting patches on the wingback chairs.
I'm pretty sure I've shown off my receipts over drinks. Hey, when Michael's does 20% off ON TOP OF already reduced clearance prices, it's worth talking about when you score that cart full of Christmas decor for like 70% off.
I live in the suburbs now. This is a cry for help.
Talk to us sometime when you have real suburbia problems. Like if you ever start decorating for Valentines Day.

I've bought a purse used before. It wasn't even designer.

LOL. You remind me of my mom. But I mean that in a good way. Whenever she'd score a deal at Filene's Basement she'd leave the tag on so we could oooh and ahhh over the price she paid.
And I thought GMIL and Allie had a problem going nuts over AG, I'm impressed.
I have a serious problem that AG has aided and abetted over the years with their frequent sales. I like the rush of a good deal plus an AG obsession.
GMIL forces us to go see the AG store when we are in Nashville for an extended amount of time. We never leave without two outfits. GMIL gets one for her doll and one for Allie's dolls. Oh and anytime there's a mini that comes out Allie gets it.

When someone compliments anything I have, I have to tell them what a deal I got. It's like a reflex." $9 at Target" I have to actively remind myself that random people don't care.

You are my people. "Oh these shoes, funny story, I got them at Nordstrom Rack for .01". no1curr, just say thank you Gina. Save
eclaires I want to come to your house and play with your AG dolls.
She's going to lose her shit over Gabriella McBride the upcoming GOTY who is a tap dancer.
Really? I didn't know this. DD is a tap dancer and now I really want that doll. But DD is getting Rebecca on Friday for her 7th birthday and wants Melodie next year for her 8th birthday. Hmmm. Maybe next year she's let me sell Grace and we could replace her with the tap dancer. Actually, our Grace is a tap dancer because I bought a (USED ) tap dance outfit. I think it was from Marisol's collection.
eclaires, DD2 would be so happy to be your daughter right now! She wants Melody so bad right now, but it's not in the budget.
Melody is so awesome! It hurts my doll collector heart that Scarlett put her in non-historically appropriate clothes but that's actually Scarlett's favorite outfit she's wearing because she insisted Melody had to have the best outfit because Donald (in the Melody movie) was mean to her. I figured that was actually progress since usually the best or newest outfit goes to Isabelle who I think she sees as herself in a way because Isabelle was the first doll she was super into (blond dancer) and identified with.
Do you think Caroline will come back? I wanted that doll so bad for my Caroline and I didn't know they retired dolls.

are you married with children these days?
UGH NO.
Ask me again another day though. I have plucked my chin hair in front of this guy so any minute now.
I see nothing wrong with the mom's purchase, or buying used luxury goods, as long as they're in good condition. Buying used or borrowing is a styling trick. So how can I slam lay people for doing the same.
If it's something the kid wanted for the holidays, and mom had the opportunity, I think it's cool that the went the used route vs. buying an LV brand new for the younger set. If the daughter likes bags, the daughter can learn to take care of it. Then, eventually branch into buying new luxury goods when she's older, and can care for them properly.
Side note: We go out of our way to buy used items for the girls. We want to eliminate the stigma. We don't want them getting beyond themselves, and mocking or looking down on people who may not have the option. Just because we can get everything brand new, doesn't mean we'd want to go that route.
Buying used, is really no different to me than girls who inherit luxury goods from their mothers, grandmothers, etc. As long as the person before keep it in good condition, it's fair game. Some girls just don't have a lineage of deep pockets.
I also thought that like..vintage Chanel is a thing yes? (Omg used). I would love, love, love a vintage Chanel..um anything and I wish I had developed an eye and understanding for things like authenticity.
So it's used? Idk. It seems like You can learn about value, and care of luxury goods even if they are used.

Possibly but not for awhile. Felicity is coming back out in 2017 so it seems like they are cycling them in and out. Caroline is pretty easy to find new in box for less than retail though so all hope is not lost.

Marisol is actually on our list to collect because Sass is obsessed. I bought her the book of all AG stuff and she zeroed in on it.

I guess I don't see the issue when a shit-ton of UMC folks drop hundreds on hot toy items and electronics. Heck, if I had the money, I'd have spent $600 when the PS4 and X-Box One came out. Instead, I spent $400 two years after the PS4 released.
When I have the funds I happily spend a chunk of change on something I know my children will appreciate. I dropped $230 on specialty markers for my 12 year old this Christmas, and just spent $225 getting her hair done for her birthday.
I guess it comes down to the item in question. My mama wouldn't have spent $200 on a handbag when I was a preteen, but she did spend $150-200 on getting my hair braided 2-3 times a year. So... priorities?
Queen Mamadala, what markers are those? My older daughter is way into drawing and illustrating her stories and saves her money up for really nice colored pencils and markers and those sound like some that would be a great gift.

Where would I look? I've only seen jacked up prices.

Copic markers. She's been asking about them for several months and watching tons of youtube videos. I got sucked into watching the videos, too. Lol Those suckers are expensive, but worth it for illustrators. She likes drawing anime and comics.
