I sent my mom some money today so she could get supplies, if there's anything left. She has 2 places she can evacuate to but either way she'll probably be on her own unless my brother stays with her instead of with friends.
She's in North Ft. Myers so if it stays like this I am really worried the manufactured home she lives in will be gone. She rents and I am positive she doesn't have any kind of insurance so she could lose almost everything. I know she's planning to put family heirlooms, documents, and photos in her car but it is missing a window so unless it's in a garage I am not sure how much that will help.
If she has a dishwasher tell her to put it there. I've read about that several times today. I hope eveything goes well for her.

I had to change my TV channel earlier lest I threw the remote through it. Some chucklefuck on the 26th floor of a Miami beachfront highrise was being interviewed and he was staying. He could see a giant crane out a few yards off his balcony, he had no shutters or plywood. But hey, those canned goods and Pop-tarts should suffice. ::rage::
I have seen those cranes first hand in Miami, and they are no joke!
Yep, but from a few days ago, a huge chunk of Publix stores are closed from now until Tuesday. I don't know any grocery stores in FL that don't do that (hurricane cakes/treats) for basically any hurricane coming toward them. For hurricane parties and such.
MIL is not only not evacuating but is refusing to go bunk with a friend because "Matthew was fine." She lives across the fucking street from the fucking Atlantic Ocean.
Oh bowies I hope she goes to a shelter asap. DH's uncle, wife, and FIL finally finally listened and left their house for a shelter after mandatory evacuation. Our friends left their house in a South Tampa at 6am today and they are still not at our house in Atlanta yet. I am aghast that they decided to do this. We have so many friends who had to stay due to a spouse needing to work over the weekend for their shifts or be on call. I'm glad some were able to go to the hospitals with their spouses but others stayed at home with their families instead.
She for sure will not go to a shelter if she won't even hang out with her friend. She keeps blaming her cats but they are welcome at her friend's house.

My parents also live in N. Ft Myers, they evacuated but they may be able to help if needed afterwards.
In addition, depending on how their house prevails I may fly in to help with cleanup. Please keep me posted and PM me if she needs assistance and either I or my parents can help.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. She has a presumably safe place* to stay but my brother is going to a friend's so she'll be alone. I'm irritated with him but we basically have no relationship so I won't be changing his mind. I asked her to send me the address of where she is staying so I can monitor things. I really do think she'll be safe but I am worried she'll end up homeless. MH and I need to have a conversation about next steps in that case. It's a complicated situation for "reasons."
*It's a sturdy, inland home but the owner will be elsewhere.
One tip I heard last night I thought was really good, and I hadn't thought about it before.
If you're in FL and have friends/family elsewhere, have them be a designated contact. Cell circuits will be overloaded, so rather than have everyone trying to reach out from all over, it's one connection you're making. It will also mean you only have to update to one person in the chaos and stress and won't e repeating yourself to every relative.
I'd not seen my parents' condo in Naples. Guess I might never. They're on a small island with beach front, although they're high enough to avoid surge.
Now my mom - NOT in a mandatory evacuation zone, NOT on the coast - is texting me freaking out that they are going to find a shelter. I am practically sitting on my hands to keep from telling her to take many seats. People from South Florida are showing up at grocery stores in her town asking for shelter.
Can anyone help with a Bermudian stuck at Miami airport?
Has she found a flight out yet? To anywhere? It's a shot in the dark but if she can get to a NY or Philly area airport I'll get her. We have room in our house in NJ and are happy to make sure she's safe.

Oh no. Have you managed to get out somewhere? If any flights are going out maybe you can find a place to stay with someone? (our house is being renovated but we have a couch if you can make it to DC). And I think direct flights from DC to Hamilton may still be on--not sure when in the year they cut off.
H is supposed to be flying to St Kitts via MIA on Sunday but we assume this is not happening.
My friend's area ended up becoming a voluntary evacuation zone (may have been upgraded to mandatory, not sure). She and her H left several hours ago to go to a hotel in Birmingham (closest pet friendly she could find that wasn't booked up). They are making good time, so at least they won't be stuck on the highway. I'm going to be so sad for her if her house floods though. She doesn't have flood insurance and they literally just moved to Florida like 2 months ago.
I have an uncle and aunt in Naples. I asked my mom (this is her BIL and his wife; my late dad's brother) if she's heard from them, and she said she hasn't but knowing them they're likely to stay.
It was starting to feel windy and we had thunderstorms tonight, and a bit of panic started to set in, so I'm TOTALLY fine over here D: I'm still salty that I have to work today but I'm making it my mission to be home by 4:30, as winds are supposed to be picking up here around 3. I also know quite a few who evacuated over to the west coast, which is not safe anymore, so now they are scrambling. Please everyone stay safe.
What has really been fucked up to see is all the people on my FB trying to sell their stupid football tickets ahead of Irma (before the games were cancelled). Even with the impending emergency this is where energy was going. Insane.

this is better - from 5 AM this morning... they are getting clsoer to nailing down the actual time...it seems like a better option for it to hit FL/keys in the daytime than nighttime
