Great Smoky Mountain National Park is issuing warnings and I think I read they are planning on shutting down - telling people who are camping and hiking through the area they have to leave because it's going to be dangerous there due to the storm once it hits. I don't remember ever seeing anything like that in the almost 10 years I've lived here.

I'm all worried about the guy who stayed behind with all the cats that live at... is it Hemingway's house? poor kitties.

Yep, the east side gets the whip-around. More tornados on that side including the strong wind gusts.
ETA: That's why meteorologists are calling it the worst case scenario - Irma is churning through the exceptionally warm Florida Strait (gaining strength) and then the east side will be over the peninsula.
Fuck. Now I'm more worried about my family in PBC.
I have a friend whose parents are in a red zone and refuse to evacuate. They've actually moved to a friend's house, on the water, because they have storm shutters. It makes me want to cry...I cannot even imagine her worry.
My cousin in Naples moved inland somewhere, and apparently their neighbors volunteered to take in some animals from the Naples zoo. They've got pictures on Facebook of cages of monkeys, lemurs, and parrots being brought into the neighor's garage! I'm not sure where exactly they are, but I thought it was pretty interesting that the zoo animals are just being moved to people's houses. I assume that zoo workers are either living there or staying there.

Yeah, it's Hemingway's house. I'm a huge Hemingway fan, like diehard, but I'd rather see the house and everything in it go than for that guy to stay and get hurt
ETA: I'm literally sitting underneath a poster of Ernest Hemingway as I type, lol

Oh how stressful for your friend.
I think it's because we can actually *see* what the storm is doing to other places, and coming fresh off of Harvey...I've never been so scared about a natural disaster. My sister is finally out, but I could not sleep last night or relax all morning until I knew she was at her hotel, so I can only begin to imagine the stress your friend is under.
My thoughts are with you guys, and everyone else either nearby or with family in the path.

Actually that was pissing me off. The guy they interviewed sounded entirely reasonable and had an answer for everything (elevation, power, food, roof, when they would have evacuated.) He was far from "well we think it will turn. We prayed. Matthew turned away." They were all are you a meteorologist? Are you a structural engineer?
Well, you can't say follow science of storm but don't trust your engineers.
I agree with the point they were trying to eventually salvage which is that this guy likely is fine due to resources, they don't want to go on record, but they don't want it to give false confidence to others.
But they tried to make him look like a kook and I don't think he is.
If I invested all that I'd rather take a chance on mine than a random hotel in homestead. My relatives in Andrew at a major shelter lost the roof (thankfully not as catastrophic as superdome). I get people saying "I've hired the best and i don't know how you built that county hospital."
Only bridges give me pause in his personal situation (and his neighbors sound equally equipped.)
Maybe I have a soft spot for islanders because you don't expect entire countries to move to fl, do you? Keys are father from Miami than bimini. Driving 5 miles inland like my fil should do is entirely different.
Ok tsunamis are seismic. Hurricanes are not. Don't catastrophize what's already scary.
Just a spring tide can cause regular flooding.
Surge is scary enough and dangerous. It's not a tsunami. Size and power are different. Causes are entirely different. The ocean floor in fl gives a very different response than Japan or west coast us. Parallels based only on high water help nothing.

It didn't bother me. The guy sounded very dismissive of what they were trying to tell him - saying he didn't thing the storm surge would be as bad as they said it could be. I know it's hard to evacuate, but it didn't sound like this guy was staying because he didn't have the means to go.
But if they don't want to hear people's reasons, they might want to stop interviewing people who don't evacuate.
Note: My aunt and cousins live right next to West Palm and are being very dismissive of this whole thing so I may just be very frustrated at the moment.
So this article says almost verbatim it's happened before, isn't a tsunami. Its due to low pressure. Yeah, it will likely flood back, but heed warning, don't freak out
My parents are in the kissimmee area and seem unconcerned. They moved their outdoor furniture off the lanai, and thats about it.
My son and his (pregnant) girlfriend are in the Kissimmee area. They left to Tampa and her dad's house. Facebook photos show windows are boarded up and sandbags out but I sure wish there were more sandbags. Fingers are crossed.
In-laws are stil in their house in Port Orange with maybe two days worth of food prepared and batteries and self-powered chargers and stuff so "they'll be find." Ugh.
rjamz, I hear that. I got a completely different impression. They're expecting 5-10. Well we're at 12 min. But what if it goes above? We have supported levels to 30. What about roof. Response.
I also don't like characterization of stilts as I know stiltsville is all but gone but very different impression than driven pilings that this guy (and most on land there) have.
But when family gets involved, it's so easy to meld experiences. I'm sorry your family is being recalcitrant.
I just think if they wanted to make the point they wanted, he was probably their worst choice

The major danger on the coast is storm surge not wind damage. They need to get out.
Is this a non Floridian thing? Why do people flee to a coast? Or from one coast to another? Do they not realize that going a 2 hour drive away still keeps you in risk zone? Like they don't realize such small distances?
I've seen stories of going from Miami to Naples. Why?! Were they not there in the last few decades that went across the state from one city to another? These aren't huge distances.
Why leave Orlando for coastal Tampa?
I'll sound judgmental, but I'm really plain confused.

There's sadly a calculation on the margins. Elevation. Protection of windows. Materials of construction. What's nearby. They need to get out, I agree, but I dont know their options
Do I choose a bee or a wasp. One might mean certain death. One might mean survivable but painful and dangerous.

My mother left Ft. Myers for Tampa along with my 93 year old grandfather and her dog because my sister lives in Tampa with her three children. My sister has cancer and her husband is out of town and her children are all under the age of nine. Obviously this is anecdotal, but she went to be with my sister.
When they realized Tampa was looking increasingly at risk, they evacuated to Orlando
I think people have a variety of reasons for the choices they make.
