This is interesting. AA cancelled our flight that should have been tonight at 545pm - they saod last flight from MIA was 12pm Friday. There was a plane full of Bermudians from Orlando who missed the flight last night and had ro male alternate arrangements. Many of which who are stuck in Miami until at least Tuesday
There was a plane headed to NJ that was cancelled on THURSDAY. I just saw this now or I would have helped. Godmother's daughter and son in law were going to pick her up, after being stuck in Miami trying to get out, and bring her back to FL Keys. They are thinking of sending her up when it passes and flights pick up again. So she's not around for Jose or to clean up.
Has she found a flight out yet? To anywhere? It's a shot in the dark but if she can get to a NY or Philly area airport I'll get her. We have room in our house in NJ and are happy to make sure she's safe.
No they haven't been able to get a flight or rental car.
I'm so sorry. They'll be in my thoughts for a safe time through the storm.
What has really been fucked up to see is all the people on my FB trying to sell their stupid football tickets ahead of Irma (before the games were cancelled). Even with the impending emergency this is where energy was going. Insane.
I haven't seen this but I'm not surprised.
I hope people cancelled their hotel rooms in Gainesville and that evacuees from further south can use them. Tallahassee too.
Fil says he's not in zone. He is. He's half a block from the red to orange dividing line, but they're saying whole town anyway so that doesn't matter.
He's apparently not prepped to board up windows, and I'm thinking no plywood anywhere. Stubborn old coot. But he has a bathtub of water so he listened to me on 1 thing. Sigh.
The good thing is if he goes to a shelter everyone will be his new best friend because he just damn sociable. They'll play cards and sneak from flasks.
Bad news, he dislikes his trump loving neighbors and isn't shy about voicing opinions. Lol. If you hear "6'7" Florida man in fight over politics at shelter" send bail money

Fuckity, fuck, fuck, fuck! I just had to get that off my chest.
H and I are as prepared as we can be. We are no longer going out, hunkering down for the long haul. I have a three lb bag of peanut m&ms from Costco plus four bottle of sangria. I was feeding my feeling when I was out this morning. I also have healthy food as well.
We are almost ready (west Orlando). Still need to finish the video inventory of the house, do a load of laundry, and add stuff to our go-bag. Our street is meeting at 4 for a perishable food block party. We put down sod in our garage for our lab to use as a potty.
Hundreds of utility trucks are parked at Epcot for post-storm deployment.
Thinking of and praying for all you ladies and your loved ones. I am in the Midwest but have friends and family all over FL. My youngest brother is a LEO in Boca so he's there for the duration
My brother just evacuated out of Tampa - he flew out to visit his girlfriend in Canada. I guess she was there and left a few days ago.
He told me that September 10th (my birthday) is the height of hurricane season which sounded fitting to him so it was my fault if his house gets destroyed - he thinks he's hilarious.
Palm Beach County issued curfew beginning at 3pm. Winds are starting to pick up and it's raining here and there. A few people we know drove over to Naples/Ft. Myers earlier in the week to try to escape, and are now on their way back. Hoping everyone on all sides stay safe.

You'll be in my thoughts! Good call on M&Ms and sangria! Check in when you can and know I'm sending good vibes from NJ.

yikes- I'm watching MCNBC & they are showing lines around the shelters in SW FL...a lady said she'd just been in line for 5 hours...it's starting to rain there. I feel awful for those people...I know the track shifted west recently, but the government needs to be better prepped to handle them. otherwise, this is going to discourage others from seeking shelter. They said one shelter opened, then they decided it wasn't strong enough for the storm & made those people leave.
My aunt consulted her tarot cards and they said they'd be fine so she's not worried about the storm. 😳😳😳 I think the latest models show the storm west of where they are but still, so glad you can put faith in fucking tarot cards and not science. I hope the damn cards are right this time.

My sister, her kids, her two cats, my mom, my 93-year old grandfather, and my mom's dog evacuated from the Tampa area to Orlando. They got a room at Disney, which is accepting pets right now. I know they'll take good care of them and I'm so relieved.
My stepdad is being stubborn and remaining in Ft. Myers. I'm so worried.
We visited here a year or so ago. Sanibel is like 2/3 wildlife refuge. It's absolutely beautiful and very residential. Meanwhile, my family in this giant bay just slightly north of Fort Myers, in Punta Gorda, is still not evacuating. My Aunt, Uncle, cousins and their 4 year old. 😞

Liking some of these posts for the slivers of good news (and good booze choices) contained within them. But really I'm thinking of everyone in Florida right now, and your families, and hoping for the best.

Did they live there during Charley? That was a horrific mess.

The east side of the eye is the worst side to be on.

"In general, the strongest winds in a hurricane are found on the right side of the storm because the motion of the hurricane also contributes to its swirling winds. A hurricane with a 90 mph [145 km/hr] winds while stationary would have winds up to 100 mph [160 km/hr] on the right side and only 80 mph [130 km/hr] on the left side if it began moving (any direction) at 10 mph [16 km/hr]."
Yep, the east side gets the whip-around. More tornados on that side including the strong wind gusts.
ETA: That's why meteorologists are calling it the worst case scenario - Irma is churning through the exceptionally warm Florida Strait (gaining strength) and then the east side will be over the peninsula.

My cousins no, but my Aunt and Uncle did part- time and it decimated their condo. After posting, my cousins and their little boy are going to stay with friends down the road who have storm shutters. So, that's better I guess. My A and U have parked their van sideways in front of the garage to attempt to keep the surge from their home.

So the direction of the wind is in the same direction as the forward velocity of the storm. On the other side the wind is blowing opposite the direction the storm is moving. In southern herisphere everything is opposite because their storms swirl counterclockwise.

The size of this storm and the geography it's going to cover keeps blowing my mind. They've issued tropical storm and surge warnings here in Charleston. The storm is heading AWAY from us.

I know I'm just a lurker on this board, but if your brother needs anything, I'm in Boca and have a TON of supplies. Please PM me if he needs anything.
We're likely under a TS watch on Tuesday here - in coastal Virginia.
My parents are evacuating in the morning. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. They've been in Florida for most of their lives (well over 50 years) and are acting like damn newbs.

I saw that too. I remember in Houston they said they wouldn't turn anyone away no matter what. Florida doesn't seem to be following that example
