Imagine your parents had so little faith in your abilities they’d pay half a million dollars to get you and your sibling into your preferred school. Assuming these kids weren’t in on it, that’s gotta sting.
Everyone saying how not surprised you are just comes across as so very dismissive.
I am not surprised, but I'm not sure that is dismissive. I think it's more cynical b/c rich people never get jail time or are really held that accountable. So they might have to pay fines and their kids, who probably were already in on this, are now seen as idiots, but probably already have big degrees and jobs and aren't hurting either. I mean pretending to have them on a sports team that they aren't on? Or staying at the SAT test longer so someone else can correct your wrong answers? Those kids knew. Their parents are so wrong in bringing them into this and making college a pay-to-play, but what do you think the judge is going to do, jail time? I just doubt it.

I'm reading that Loughlin's daughters had no idea they didn't get in on their own merit. Damn.
ETA: and honestly this seems really far-fetched...I'm going to look through the articles I read today to see which one reported this...
ETA 2: found the article and turned out I had a reading comprehension fail — it said the two “did not participate in the sport” (rowing) and I misread, thinking it said they “did not participate in the scheme.” They posed with rowing machines. They knew.

One of them (not sure whose kid) posed with water polo gear so he could be photoshopped into a pool setting for this. So, either he was in on it, or really really dumb.
I don't mean to come across as dismissive. I'm actually horrified by the process, that so many institutions are involved, and that it's so common that there are systems in place to make it happen. It makes my job as an educator feel pointless. I'm just cynical that it's being reported as somehow shocking, when it's not.

These sports these parents picked .. sailing, rowing ... they picked sports they thought would fly under the radar bc really who does them 🙄 they thought they could get away w/ it 😡😡😡
Notice that most articles mention Felicity Huffman, but not her husband William H Macy?
I had the same thought. I'm 100000% sure that there were dudes involved in this scheme (some famous or well-known) and yet only the women's faces are plastered all over the news. Obviously, they are wrong here, but they are not alone.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

This is where I am. With all that money. Where were they the other 12 years of their education? Did they keep up with their grades/educational needs? Did they get tutors? Were they paying any attention to PSAT scores?
And if they did and they felt their child wasn't able to do it on their own, why push them down that path?

Sailing and rowing seem like very normal Ivy League sports. Sure it’s not college football, but I think they both have a large presence in the Ivy League world.

One of Loughlin’s daughters posted in Instagram that she didn’t really care about school but wanted to go to college for the parties and “game days” (not the actual football games, just, you know, the parties).

Saying “not surprised” and little else is text book dismissive.
This story in conjunction with the “white parents perpetuate school segregation” is just a two day doublewhammy of an indictment on the modern educational system. It’s beyond feelings of “not surprised.”
It is a given our system is tailored to benefit white and/or wealthy at the expense of many POC and/or poor, thus how “not surprised” you are feeling offers nothing. And it almost sounds as if it’s so not surprising you can’t muster anything else? Tell me more.
Even if there's no actual punishment for them I imagine Hallmark will drop Loghlin pretty quick and I think that's a lot of her work other than Fuller house. So she'll at least have that consequence.
She is the executive producer on their #1 show and a whole franchise of mystery movies on their Mystery and Movies channel, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
I honestly only thought the sketchy stuff was just giving big donations to the schools to influence getting your kid in. The changing of SATS, posing your kid with polo gear. This shit is nuts!
And yes the wide swath of people involved. I mean people changed scores when they were serving as official testing officials. That is bananas!
Come on guys, allow yourself to be horrified by this.

Does that quantity of money not only guarantee admission, but that they can stay and get a diploma?
In that documentary Born Rich that I watched recently, one of the entitled brats jokes about how in an entire semester he only attended 8 school related things. That includes lectures, tests, finals... he only showed up for stuff 8 times. And then he would receive a letter saying something about despite his disappointing gpa, they felt if he tried harder next semester they would forgive his performance. He laughingly said, “they cant kick me out!!”

But... I'm not. I wonder if that's because of my socio-economic status growing up, and even now. Of course there are wide swaths of people that aren't deserving of the roles they find themselves in. They (or someone else) paid for them to be there. I don't come from the type of background where I assume people got there on their own merit.

These kinds of stories are horrible. I recall hearing stories of parents who pay medical professionals to provide false documents stating that their child needs disability accommodations, such as extended time.

Basically the entire soccer coaching staff at USC was indicted so not just the richey-rich pastimes. My god, how pissed the real student athletes must be.

One of the quotes I read seemed to suggest that they didn’t realize want to wait and wonder and wanted a guaranteed admission. I mean COME ON.

But I'm not surprised. I have a BIL who works at Ivy leagues and has stories that I find unethical, albeit maybe not illegal. I went to a wannabe ivy league and there was shady stuff going on there with "legacy" students who were dumb as rocks, but who had rich donor parents. We already knew that rich people hire SAT and college coaches/prep, they rewrite (or write) college essays, they donate to schools that their kids want to get into. They call friends in admissions or at those schools. Saying I'm not surprised, does not mean I'm not outraged.
I was surprised at 19 when I found out that a friend had the lowest SAT score I ever heard and yet was in the same school as I was in the same biomedical engineering, but there was a dorm named after his grandparent. How about the guy who took me out on a date and was a music major, but said, "I don't have any musical talent - it was just that my whole family has always been at this university and it was the only place they could find me a legacy position. I just have to take music classes for one year and that I can change degrees."
I posted the first article about white parents yesterday b/c I am outraged. I'm mad at friends and family who make decisions that are the "best for their kids" without thinking. I moved my kid out of a pay-to-play-style charter school that was good for my kid b/c I realized the issue. I challenge those I know to think differently about education - public and private, even challenging my close friend who basically markets for a charter school to get her to think outside the box on the "best" kids to market to. I'm glad the FBI caught this, but I also wonder what will come of this. Especially since so many of these are not public universities, so accountability is tough. What we F*&king need is Betsy DeVos to be gone so someone who has the intelligence and focus can actually look at higher education and equality in K-12 education from an objective and empathetic POV.

I can't imagine how it feels right now to be a student who applied at the same time as these kids and didn't get in. Like, "slap in the face" doesn't even begin to cover it.

I keep reading the title of this thread as INCEL celebrities.
I'm glad all participants are being charged but we'll see what happens with actual punishment. As someone else said, why not spend that money on tutors and coaches? The entitlement eats at me.
