The Justice Department on Tuesday charged more than 30 wealthy people — including two television stars — with being part of a long-running scheme to bribe and cheat to get their kids into big-name colleges and universities.
The alleged crimes included cheating on entrance exams, as well as bribing college officials to say certain students were coming to compete on athletic teams when those students were not in fact athletes.
Among those charged are actresses Felicity Huffman, best known for her role on the television show “Desperate Housewives,” and Lori Loughlin, who appeared on “Full House,” according to court documents.
Authorities said the crimes date back to 2011, and the defendants used “bribery and other forms of fraud to facilitate their children’s admission” to numerous college and universities,” including Georgetown, Yale University, Stanford University, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and UCLA, among others.
I didn't think USC was that hard to get into - some of these kids must have really low scores/grades. One of the articles I read said they staged photos of the kids playing the sports - lol.
I wonder which high schools these kids went to. I've heard some crazy stories about the kids at the prep schools in LA - this is probably just the tip of the iceberg.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

🤨 Their 2018 acceptance rate was just 13% with 85% of those having test scores above the 95th percentile.
Sure, it’s not Ivy League - but USC is definitely a top tier university.
I am surprised they got caught. Other than that, not surprising.
Yeah, I'm surprised the FBI works on this. I didn't realize it would be that level of a crime. But yeah, I'm not actually surprised. Isn't that basically what being a "legacy" is code for?

I don't view legacy as that at all. I could be being naive but legacy and full on bribery are two totally different things!
The socially accepted way of rich people to get their kids into college is to donate a crap ton of money to help build a building or whatever. This seems like the lower-cost and illegal way of rich people getting their kids into college. The part where they had people at the colleges helping out for payment I am absolutely not surprised about, but I will say that paying other people to take the SAT for your kid did surprise me. There is absolutely no way to morally justify that, not that the other things are really justifiable either. But a test score is a test score. Save some money and get your kid a damn tutor.
But hey, let's talk about how evil affirmative action is again!
I mean on the one hand. Not shocking. Rich people going to rich people.
But y’all. There are non illegal ways of doing this. Sketchy sure, morally ambiguous, wrong, whatever. There are ways to do this where you don’t end up in prison orange.
This is blowing my mind. Also it seems like Loughlin’s one daughter is basically an Instagram influencer. I’m sorry but any college will do to further that career if she just wants sponsored posts at a targeted audience. No need to pay $500k to scam your way into USC.

This story is crazy!
The sad thing is, nothing much will probably happen to them in the way of punishment. Although I would guess the public humiliation is a pretty bad sting...

Mama probably knows that IG Influencer is a title with limited shelf life.
(My autocorrect wanted to change that to IG Influenza, which may be the best one I’ve seen yet. Good job Tim Apple!)

I'm here. I know rich people use their money and connections to get ahead, I always assumed that's how 90% of rich kids got into these universities. But these are things like arranging to change test scores and explicit bribery of officials. That's insane.
One set of parents spent 1.2 million dollars on bribes! Surely there's better ways to use that money to benefit your kid?
I think I am more surprised that these actors want their kids to get educations. I suppose that is so that they can go make their own money and not live off of trust funds? That seems legit. Doing all this shady business to ensure that happens is not legit.
Even if there's no actual punishment for them I imagine Hallmark will drop Loghlin pretty quick and I think that's a lot of her work other than Fuller house. So she'll at least have that consequence.
