Please stop saying schools are ok. College students have died since reopening. Teachers in their 20s have died since reopening. It’s kind of Trumpian (virtually no one gets it).
@@@ I didn’t say they are ok. Colleges are absolutely not ok. High schools aren’t great either mostly because of sports. Every breakout here leads back to football or volleyball and we will see the same with the next sport. Elementary schools aren’t having the same issues because there are no extracurricular activities. Masks seem to be working. There may be an isolated case but no spread in schools. My point was the huge breakouts are happening from all the unmasked events happening. There is risk elsewhere obviously but I don’t think schools are the big cause. That’s all.
@
elementary school STUDENTS aren’t having the same issues. Their teachers and paras, their administrators, have died from school exposure. I agree that events are a really bad issue. Those families then come to school. No one should be in school because no one can be trusted outside of school.
People definitely are letting their guard down. One of my jobs at work is coordinating weddings in our historic chapel (including reminding couples of our COVID rules of masks on everyone and 25% capacity). I discovered two wedding guests last week walking up to the chapel with no masks and they tried to tell me that “oh, masks aren’t required here because it’s only 30 people and we all know each other.” Umm, that’s not how this works. In fact, that mindset is exactly how this spreads.
I definitely don’t think schools should be open because people won’t do the right thing outside of school. If people were otherwise doing what they’re supposed to I think if schools have an adequate set up (masks, barriers, proper ventilation, small class sizes) we could safely do it, but that’s beyond cost prohibitive in a nation that treats funding schools as a burden and teachers as expendable.
I also think gyms and indoor dining are both dangerous still. I feel for restaurants suffering under a lack of federal assistance on this, but there’s too much evidence that indoor dining, which requires no mask, is absolutely a factor.
NJ is back up to our May numbers after a great summer. All at the same time indoor dining, gyms and schools reopened. I don’t think it’s coincidence. I think it’s part each of those and part taking those reopening to mean they could let their guard down.

@@@@ Anecdotally, this has been our experience. DS1 is in kinder and his school district has seen no evidence of widespread cases within the schools. There have been one off cases here and there, but they’re doing contact tracing and haven’t linked any of those cases as coming from within the schools themselves.
I’ve been impressed with the metrics they’re looking at and how they’re paying attention to the science. I am confident they will shut down if it feels like the risk becomes too high, but as of now, it’s been almost 10 weeks with no outbreaks in our district (at any age level).
I know school is a risk and I’m not suggesting otherwise, but I do think mask compliance is helping a lot in those cases. And while I can’t speak for others, knowing they’re in school is making us more cautious. We recognize we’re at higher risk for getting and spreading the virus, so we’re minimizing store trips and not seeing friends.
One of my friends told me about a party she is going to today. It's for families (young kids and parents) and one of the precautions is that they are requiring one person from each family unit to be tested before attending. Huh? So this is like Russian Roulette? You have a family of 4 potential carriers, but only one of them gets tested and that is supposed to some how magically protect people?
Of course a big problem I don't think we have talked about yet is so many live paycheck to paycheck. There is no help anymore and no help coming. People are back to going to work sick because what other choice do they have? It's a mess. Lots of reasons why it's getting bad again but none with an easy fix.
I really feel as if this isn't discussed nearly enough.
I have always been privileged, but right after college I really struggled and I had to work at an amusement park, fast food, and at Wal-Mart at minimum wage or close to it. Then, I lucked into an office job. Ever since I left my last "service" job, it's really bothered me that even my circle, there seems to be such a disconnect about how people who work long-term in low paying service industries live. How can these employees even survive right now?
Boris Johnson announced last night that England is going into a 4 week lockdown starting on Thursday, dependent on Parliament voting it in. All restaurants, bars, gyms, hairdressers/beauty salons and non-vital shops will be closed. You can get takeout from restaurants or bars. Kids will still be in school (which I think is a mistake). People are being asked to work from home if they can.
I wonder what compliance will be like? For the first shut down, we were all confused and scared. Now people have pandemic fatigue. How does the UK go about enforcing limits on private households gathering? I speculate that’s how it was spreading here in CA over the summer since masks compliance and social distancing is pretty high out in public.
My guess is compliance of those who have always complied and non-compliance of others. There will be no enforcement on private household gatherings unless they are a bit party that gets called in (which did happen before and I expect it to happen with uni students). Students were going to huge Halloween parties despite their area's lockdowns anyway. Lots of "people" on twitter stating that it's all a hoax and none of the info is real...not surprising due to the gov't fucking around and those in power doing the wrong things themselves (one rule for us, one rule for you). We're all screwed.

My partner's mom is covid symptomatic now unfortunately. Well she actually never got tested yet, but she lives with her daughter and adult nephew and they're positive, so going on the assumption that the severe symptoms she has now are covid. She's immunocompromised due to an organ transplant and diabetes. They said they're calling 111 to have someone come and evaluate her because she hasn't eaten for 3 days and is having trouble breathing. I know they just announced the lockdowns there, but I'm not sure what hospital care/capacity is like right now. I just hope she gets the care she needs and isn't left at home with no help. Also, I'm unclear how long it's taking 111 to get to people at this point. My partner's sister made it seem like it might be awhile. mrsukyankee , by any chance do you have any insight? Thanks!

wanderingback , where in the country is she? It really depends on location but if she's older and having problems breathing, they should get to her sooner rather than later (they are taking that symptom very seriously). If she's near a large city, then she'll have a better time of it as they have more hospital space (several special hospitals built just for this purpose). Our worry is more that we're lacking in numbers of doctors/surgeons/nurses due to people leaving due to Brexit.
wanderingback positive thoughts for your partner's mom- hopefully she's seeing the worst of it now and on the mend soon.
I'm so scared for what the winter will bring. Our hospitalizations are back where they were at the height of this, but now we have so many more things open and I don't see people giving them up anytime soon.
A senior WH official said Dr. Scott Atlas did not have clearance from the WH for his interview with RT. The official said Atlas “did it on his own without approval by the White House.”
"I recently did an interview with RT and was unaware they are a registered foreign agent," Atlas tweeted. "I regret doing the interview and apologize for allowing myself to be taken advantage of. I especially apologize to the national security community who is working hard to defend us."

They're in London, I don't remember the exact part of the city though. I know we take about a 30 minute tube ride and then 10 minute taxi/uber from the city centre where we stay in a hotel to get to her when we visit. Ok hopefully they've already gotten to her. I didn't know they had more hospital space, so that's good. Appreciate your response!
ETA: Ok they got to her and took her to the hospital. So at least she's hopefully getting cared for.
wanderingback, hope she's doing okay! London is probably the best place to be as they have more hospital space and it hasn't been overwhelmed in the same way as the north.
In a final update to my paranoia in this thread. Test came back, negative. So yeah, totally post GA masquerading as covid 😂. But yay for having easy testing around here. Drive thru, 25 minutes total. No questions asked or money needed.
