I have one more dumb question. When ports are this backed up….what do the people on the ships do?! Do they get relief crews? Are they basically trapped? Do they have enough provisions to last through the backlogs? What if they all quit and abandon ship? (I guess that was five questions.)

This is actually part of the problem.
They are trapped and often even when they get into a port they ar not allowed off the boat due to Covid. That is causing people to quit once they finally get off the boat.

At one point the coast guard was delivering potable water and food. I’m not sure if that’s still the case

Wet kitty food is in abundance where I live. It's basically an abandoned dusty corner of the market. I didn't even notice it for a year. So if you want friskies imported to SE Asia and exported to US, I'll hook you up I can get cases!
I'm on an island in SE Asia, so obviously I have a completely irrelevant POV. I will say that my meds that used to take 2 mos to arrive from the mainland recently took under 2 weeks, so I'm filling optimistic.
What I really want to share is the shitass of the former morally bankrupt admin is ongoing. Skelator Conway is going on about how they never heard of supply chain issues. Just in case you were suffering from low BP. www.alternet.org/2021/11/supply-chain/

I'm also closely associated with, and have been for many years, loggies (civ and mil), so I guess by osmosis I've learned quite a bit. Thanks for your expertise insight mysteriouswife.
In a lolsob situation. Good friends of mine in HI did a necessary kitchen reno. Like necessary b/c they bought a foreclosure. They're now on their third delivered horribly destroyed washing machine. I'm pretty sure the most recent went through a monster truck rally. People in HI are generally pretty chill about shipping delays (chill in general), and so are my friends. But now they're on their 4th order. Of course it's not life/death they have to hand wash! But, it's been about a year. I think they just want to be done with reconstruction phase.
I feel like this needs to be on the news more, but then I guess it might just create more panic which would be bad too. Thanks to all who work in supply chain. Behind the scenes heros! I hope work gets easier for you soon. I'm really enjoying this thread. Please do keep sharing!

I feel like it’s all over the news. I am also hyper aware of what’s going on. My coworkers are sharing articles and links too. It could be perspective or #regional.

I caught a little bit of a story on it on the Today show this morning. Thanks mysteriouswife for all your insight. I’m sorry for the professional grief this is causing you, but I love it when we have subject matter experts on things and they share with the rest of the class. 😊

I am in no way an expert. I don’t even understand a lot of how the supply chain works. I just know what I deal with. I am not privy to some items discussed by different departments. I am confident most posters want me to stop talking. 😜 most of my posting come from frustration and venting.
This paragraph is a great synopsis of my ramblings above.
“ Truck drivers have been in short supply for years, but a wave of retirements combined with those simply quitting for less stressful jobs is exacerbating the supply chain crisis in the United States, leading to empty store shelves, panicked holiday shoppers and congestion at ports. Warehouses around the country are overflowing with products, and delivery times have stretched to months from days or weeks for many goods.”

I'm feeling a bit of hope. The auto industry is huge in my area and in recent months there have been literal fields of vehicles (mostly pick up trucks) sitting waiting for parts (mostly the chips). I drove past a few this past weekend and there is movement - less vehicles sitting out there. And I'm starting to see more car carrier trucks out on the roads.

And I don’t know why I can’t quote.
Since I’m in the same hell, I love your posting. I feel less alone.

We had a boat full of oil waiting to be delivered to our refinery when we had a fire and shut down for 6+months. One member of the crew lost it during the wait and we had to work with Customs to figure out how to get him off the boat and onto a plane back home before he murdered someone. And this was pre-Covid, so I can't imagine what a nightmare it would be now to try and manage that.
Sounds like we work in the same industry. Today's count of vessels at anchor outside of Long Beach terminals is 96/ For a while we were being told it would be cleared up by the end of 2022.... now they are estimating 2 years to fix the backlog. It's absolutely crazy. There is no easy fix.
SAV isn’t looking much better. I don’t have exact numbers, but it’s bad
Yeah I can't get any truckers in SAV due to the backlog. Any time I ask for a quote they are like "we are booked for the next two months."
We ordered a new cooktop for our island in Feb and still don't have it. Latest estimate is January. Unfortunately there is really nothing we can do - it's a type they don't make a lot of - island gas cooktop with the downdraft ventilation. We have thought about trying to order another brand but worried it will take as long and we will be starting the waiting process all over. They are not cheap either - ugh. Luckily our current cooktop works but its just the ventilation that broke. We were also planning on new countertops but have to wait until we get this to get those installed. It's annoying but not a lot we can do.

Ditto house stuff - just cancelled and ordered new french doors and tub faucet with different suppliers b/c we keep getting "it's coming....no, not yet" from other vendors. UGH -just tell me!
Pokemon cards have been in short supply for months - not just heading into the holidays, but really all year.
It's the resellers that are buying them up like mad. We had to limit the amount people could buy because there were down right near fist fights in the store.

It’s every company. They don’t know because we (the shipping sector) do not know either. I hope you get your stuff soon.

Resellers are such dicks.
I know. The item I want was originally $50 and will be $70 shipped from a reseller and I’m tempted to do it though. It’s better then multiple trips to target per week just to look for one item.

Are you looking for pokeman cards? Good luck because the resellers basically follow the sales rep from store to store as they fill and then take all the good ones before any non-reseller can get their hands on it. It is impossible for us to stop them because they are a customer.
Once we limited them to a certain quantity, they just started bringing more friends with them to each buy the limit.

UGH. Yea, I’m looking for that impossible Target exclusive Mythical Squishy set that isn’t even on the target website. 😭
The price of Lucky Charms had me buying Aldi brand this week instead of my usual splurge on the real stuff. Sad day. I need to find a General Mills coupon before I shop again. 😂

Do you live near Publix? General Mills was on BOGO a few days ago, not sure if it still is.
