----------- Any chance getting their vote on tossing the filibuster and codifying roe?
I know this has been coming for a long time. DH and I had a conversation a decade ago in which he thought I was overly concerned about Roe v. Wade. He changed his tune pretty quickly and is a very vocal advocate, so don't crucify him. I reminded him of that conversation last night though. I just can't believe we're actually here.

I have a lot of thoughts about this, as someone who speaks and writes about the Supreme Court.
First, I am shocked and appalled at the leak. This has never happened in modern history. My colleague who clerked for Scalia says that if was an employee they’ll be fired. If it was a Justice, they should resign or be impeached. I totally agree. I just cannot believe this.
Second, while cold comfort, so much happens between an inflammatory first draft and the final that would come out in late June. Internal politicking and lobbying. Justice Roberts trying to keep people in line. Votes changing. Drafts scrapped or revised. If this is real, it’s not at all final. The outcome doesn’t shock me after arguments but the reasoning and breadth would be very unlikely to look anything like this.
A lot of things that have happened in the last 6 years have not happened in modern history. They have shown that not many people, especially the government give a flying fuck about what should and shouldn't happen because of some code of conduct.
Sure, the person who leaked this will be fired, but I doubt they care if they are. I'm grateful that they alerting the world early to what we knew was coming. Give us a bigger head start in doing what needs to be done and working harder to make sure abortion remains legal.

And plus also Mike Braun (A-IN) has already gone on the record saying interracial marriage should be left to the states.
Wow. Just… wow.
I'm mostly just horrified, but there's a miniscule part of me admires the attempt atconsistency. You want to gut the 14th? Well, here's all the ways it will affect our modern society. Go ahead and double down and show how truly awful you are.
But, then, I'm terrified that it won't make a lick of difference. Forced gestation that could result in death and suffering clearly isn't powerful enough for these scum. As the last years have shown, they don't even bother wearing hoods anymore, so why wouldn't interracial marriage be on the chopping block?
They're probably still claiming they're small government conservatives, too.

Where in Colorado did you donate? I would also like to make a donation.

I used the list wanderingback posted and donated to all but the Boulder one.

Re: ordering abortion pills, I know many who've used women on web in even more restrictive countries than the US (at least as the US is now). It's Canadian and mails globally. So, that's another option.
Very recently they now will allow people to order even if not yet pregnant if they anticipate it may be a future concern. Previously I believe it required a minimal telehealth consult and a positive result. I think some of this change came about because of covid since mail has been seriously delayed at times.
This is where they are all headed. If you’re white, were born and identify as a male, are Christian, and heterosexual, you’re good. Otherwise, nope. No equal rights for you.

Might as well go back to land owning if they want to be originalists. I doubt they'd object.
Although the number of Irish Catholics might not like that at one point no Irish are allowed and Catholics aren't to be trusted are far more recent history. But, fuckit, they're in charge now, so down with the universally hated, women.
You'll get a kick out of how off their rocker some people really are. I copied and pasted that thing going around Facebook where it says "I'm not pro-murdering babies. I'm pro-insert female name here and a valid explanation of why the individual would be requesting an abortion."
Anyway, an acquaintance of mine on Facebook had to respond and she is completely off her rocker but I've known that for quite sometime. I would like to put her in her place and really wouldn't mind if she unfriended me. We were only friends because I was her sons cub scouts den leader but they have since moved and I didn't care for her to begin with.
Without further ado, her ridiculous response: This isn't taking away the right to have an abortion, it's updating the gestational age of a viable baby. For instance Roe v Wade was in 1973 FOLLOW THE SCIENCE. . . now NICU BABIES CAN SURVIVE AT 22 WEEKS. It's a blanket law stating the scientific viable age of a baby. . . you have all of your numerous anatomy scans and genetic testing prior to this point numerous times. <Her NICU story born at 28 weeks gestation> This isn't not allowing a women to have an abortion; this is putting a blanket law of what defines a viable baby. <She then goes on to explain why all of the women in the scenarios I listed would not be considered abortion as she says abortion is the medical code for a choice. She finally mentions that every state has a different timeframe for abortion currently, however; the maximum gestational age is based on a viable baby based on current NICU survival gestational age. If you actually read what they are doing this is laughable because it's promoting a false narrative. LOL now the science we are not going to believe in anymore? My body my choice but everyone was forced to wear a mask quarantine get a vaccine? Really we didn't see this coming?

melissa, honestly I'd just block. There's no arguing with such stupidity. And if someone is that ignorant, I can't have them in my life. They're unreachable. I've given up thinking if only I could craft the right rebuttal. This shows there is zero data, zero evidence that will have a single bit of impact except my future stroke.
This explains why McConnell was clutching his pearls so hard with concern that KBJ would be sworn in before Breyer steps down. If they sent this to a vote before then, it wouldn't pass because it'd be a tie.
This is absolutely about white supremacy, and so many nonwhite catholics and pro-lifers have no clue.
This is about making white teen girls and white women have white babies because nonwhites are outpacing whites in population.
And it's about returning to when women and nonwhites were subjugated. Next up: marriage rights, equal pay, affirmative action, brown v board, and property ownership for anyone other than white men.

I was reading some pieces about how SHOCKED the general public is that these justices and the courts wouldn't be 100% neutral. And it just goes to show how little people pay attention until it's too late.

From the NYT's live updates:
"Speaking to reporters inside the Roosevelt Room of the White House, Biden on Wednesday said the overturning of Roe vs. Wade could unravel a range of privacy rights. “What are the next things that are going to be attacked? Because this MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that’s existed in American history.” He then clarified to say “modern” American history. The White House views the potential overturning of Roe as an opportunity to galvanize voters ahead of the midterm elections."
This explains why McConnell was clutching his pearls so hard with concern that KBJ would be sworn in before Breyer steps down. If they sent this to a vote before then, it wouldn't pass because it'd be a tie.
This makes absolutely no sense. What are you referring to here?

McConnell and cohorts accused Biden of trying to pack the courts by swearing in KBJ before Breyer steps down. It didn't make any sense at the time, but now it does. If the SCOTUS wanted to put their opinion to a vote, and they have even 1 person on the "right" who is unsure, they could send it to a vote in the narrow window between Breyer stepping down and when McConnell thought KBJ would be sworn in, with a clear majority. And if they did it before Breyer stepped down, and KBJ was "packed" into the court, it'd be an even 5-5 vote even if the one hesitant justice from the right voted with his/her cohorts.
Not sure what about that makes absolutely no sense.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I have a lot of thoughts about this, as someone who speaks and writes about the Supreme Court.

Aside from the fact that they'd never vote to end the filibuster, there's also the problem of Senator Bob Casey (PA), the last "pro-life" Democrat. He'd never vote to codify Roe.

McConnell is an asshole, but he is not stupid. Did you read this article? It is literally just him stirring up the GOP base and expressing faux outrage. He is not pearl-clutching anything. All of that aside, even if this was Biden packing the court (LOL, with 1 additional justice), she isn't ruling on cases that were argued before she was seated on the court. McConnell knows this also.
