"Republican Congresswoman Mary Miller, to Trump: 'I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court yesterday.'"
Same psychopath who has said Hitler was right in his views about capturing the minds of the youth.
Oh that was definitely a gaffe … a Kinsley gaffe: per Wikipedia, “A Kinsley gaffe occurs when a political gaffe reveals some truth that a politician did not intend to admit. The term comes from journalist Michael Kinsley, who said, ‘A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth – some obvious truth he isn't supposed to say.’”
I need someone to explain to me the religious right's/Republicans'/anti-every-human-right-ever-Americans' end game. What is the end game? What is the last stop for this runaway train? A theocracy? The Handmaid's Tale? A return to 1830's America? Something else? This group seems hell-bent on keeping their populace poor, sick, stuck and stupid. Why are millions of Americans falling for this crapactual total bullshit?
Please, someone, tell me what the goal is. Because I can't wrap my head around where this is all going at all.
Personal enrichment, aka money. It’s why so many remain in politics for a bajillion years, but especially now that unfathomable amounts of money control our country’s politics now.
Yup. Power.
It’s why Evangelical Christians voted in droves for a philanderer they would have excoriated had he been running with a D by his name.
It’s why they are okay with their chosen Justices lying under oath. The ends justify the means to them.
They have chosen political power over winning people to Christ, which is what THEY would say their goal is, but it’s really not.
Basically doing the opposite of what Jesus did.
The book “Jesus and John Wayne” is a really good (and frustrating) read on how the Religious Right has built up to this moment.

And it’s still also about money for the evangelicals. Gotta keep their tax-exempt status going.
There are well established practical support organizations- apiaryps.org/
They’ve been doing this work for years and have vetted processes.
I am not on Reddit but my understanding is that anyone can post on Reddit. We need safe and vetted options for people.
I have some concerns about the abundance of people offering "camping" in their state.
I'm sure people have good intentions but it feels very performative and like they have a savior complex. There's no way to verify the legitimacy and safety when it comes to just random people on the internet. Donate to the existing organizations that have already been doing this work.
Yes, exactly. The white savior complex out in full force. People have been doing this work for years, stop making this about you.
And mine sent one saying we will continue to provide health care to our patients.
I'm sorry, saudade. Considering the majority of healthcare workers are female, and many men in our age demographic support a woman's right to choose, I wonder what they would do if people said F you and aren't silenced. The healthcare industry is in a staffing crisis as it is.
There are PLENTY of health care workers that are antis. Most fake clinics have legit medical people that support/back them. There’s a whole fake obgyn "prolife" medical society. Lots of my colleagues have to fight with other healthcare personnel (like nurses and anesthesiologists) when they have to do cases in hospital ORs. So yeah, being a health care work certainly does not equal being pro abortion.
Ah! Not at all what I was attempting to say. Poorly worded. Sorry! I know that there are many many many in healthcare that are pro life- I did my clinicals in Western Michigan and switched my OB after my own experience with her and my termination here in a very blue state. I don't mean to imply that healthcare workers are pro choice just because they are in healthcare. I meant that the majority of Americans support pro-choice ( I should have left out female and male), so the likelihood that many in Saudade's work place do as well is high. If they are fired because they won't be silenced, they will be in worse shape staffing wise that ever and I wonder if they would care.

So where can we go from here? Is it time for the Ds to end filibuster and codify this into law? Can Biden do an executive order? What can be done? I am just so angry and frustrated.

if there is anything the Ds can do, they need to FUCKING DO IT. We are short on time. With inflation and gas prices as they are 2024, and even the 2022 midterms, may (will most likely) royally fuck us.
I teared up today watching a little girl walk into Costco with her dad. At the same time, I saw a man clearly proudly wearing a shirt with the outline of an AR-15 on it and a US flag hat. This country is such fucking garbage.
Part of me wants to go to a protest. The other part of me feels like it's useless and I'm not terribly interested in getting killed over it. Last night, DH made a comment about there being a lot of people downtown between the Avs game, Pride, and protests. My first thought was "I hope no one gets shot." This country is not a safe place for so many reasons.
Did you see the news about canceling the watch party in the square tonight because of people who jumped the fence to get in on Friday? I asked DH to take me downtown to attend the protest. He said he was worried for my safety due to my walker I would need to use. I cried thinking about how he is right.

No, but it doesn't surprise me. I'm honestly just glad there wasn't a shooting.

Yes. And expand/pack the court, too. Anyone here who has heard me rant about any of the above, especially ending the filibuster, knows I think this SUCKS as a long term and will become a liability the second we lose the WH but we cannot do nothing. This is it. This is what is worth blowing it all up over.
We will probably regret the fuck out of that in 2+ years but honestly we can worry about the future later.

If it is codified into law can it be undone later on if the Rs take majority? I do worry about that.
Clarence Thomas hinted once in a concurrence that he questions congress’s power to legislate abortion related things.
We should still do it because the GOP gives no fucks about the constitutionality of anything and just does whatever the fuck they want. And we need to get these fuckers on record.
But it won’t hold.
Nor will it do anything to stop what’s coming down the pipeline in terms of all the other rights they will erode.
So reforming and expanding the court is the most comprehensive solution.
We have to first get rid of the filibuster and get all the dems in line, so I realize I’m demanding the impossible. But the dem party needs to get serious and start burning shit to the ground to make this happen. And I’m frankly disappointed in the rhetoric I’m hearing from most of them right now. Most of them are too deferential to our failed institutions to rise to the occasion.

Yes. And so will every other good thing if we end the filibuster. The Trump years would have been magnitudes more horrendous if they’d ended the filibuster. They won’t though. They’ll wait for Dems to do it because we did before (for court confirmations) and they’ve benefitted from that decision in retrospect too. But there’s little dems can do so they’d better do SOMETHING instead of just wringing their hands and raising money so we can elect them again to be just as effectual as they are right now.
I can’t get over the fact that we are essentially needing to crowdfund abortion care and rely on employers to do the right thing. My family has been financially contributing to healthcare providers and travel funds and providing housing and transportation for years. And the idea of doing this on this scale is just … impossible.
My only hope at this point is the fact that our country made it through our last civil war. And maybe in 20 years things will be turning around. But it’s going to be a long haul.
I think we are unlikely to see enough Dem majority shift to do this unless the filibuster is eliminated. But if the filibuster is eliminated we can expect that any Republican majority will swing back to ban it as soon as they reclaim a majority and so on forever. It’s possible even with no end to the filibuster that Rs may have enough majority to do this after mid-terms but they’d still need to get the WH (and maintain that Congressional majority) to enact it.
The only other way is really to stack the court or to play a very long game of re-claiming the Court, but that hasn’t really worked out for us thus far.
I was just texting my friend about how Republicans played the long game patiently for 40+ years (not 50 because we know those assholes weren't mad right after Roe was decided!!!), but we are now living in a society where the long game seems unfathomable to so many people. And in a society where people need relief RIGHT NOW and they'll vote for wannabe authoritarians if they promise to reduce gas and food prices.
They used to complain about "legislating from the bench" in the 90s and aughts, and now, guess what? They played the long game so THEY can legislate from the bench for real.
NYS is expecting a humanitarian crisis to come from over the state border, and are preparing for that. I’m guessing they’d eventually petition congress about it in some way?
PA is expecting a 25% increase in abortions since Ohio and West Virginia are ban states. Unfortunately, 22 of the 25 PA clinics are east of Harrisburg, leaving just 3 in the Pittsburgh/Western PA area to deal with most of that.
I'm so upset. I'm a fertility NP. The physician I work with and I are both horrified and so worried about what is going to happen with our patients and their embryos.
And as an infertile who currently has embryos frozen, right next door to my office, I'm worried about the implications for me personally too.
This sucks!
It's terrifying. I saw a FB post that was thinly veiled anti choice screed disguised as asking for compassion and made some point about people with unwanted pregnancy should "have compassion" for infertile women and carry PG to term and place baby for adoption. As someone who struggled for years with IF (and does not have the family size I wanted b/c of IF)I am so fucking outraged that someone is so cavalier about using the suffering of others to make her ignorant anti abortion message. so ignorant and so gross.
As a fellow infertile, I always want to tell people to fuck off when they say that SO many people would LOVE to adopt unwanted babies. No, I want pregnant people to be able to freely make their own reproductive choices. Leave me out of it!
Missouri stopped its abortions immediately upon the news today, per the AG. Now, we only had one PP left that performed them and I guess a million hoops to jump through, so odds are no one had a procedure scheduled for today, but can you imagine if you did? How devastating.
I did hear on NPR how this could effect college enrollments and company locations. I hope it does. I hope our economies tank and the blue states thrive.
Fuck the GOP.
Funny you should mention that.
Since Texas stopped most abortions about 10 months ago, we are now seeing some of the impacts of people not have access to the care they want. This teenager found out she was pregnant 2 days before the ban went into effect, at which point all appointments were taken and her only other option was a 13 hour drive, so now she has twins and they all live off her boyfriend's $9.75/hour salary.
Nytimes argues today that the next supreme court steps are likely going to be supporting racism (further limiting affirmative action and holding up racist gerrymandering of election districts) and freeing corporations from environmental regulations. So that’s depressing.

Long twitter thread for those interested - it’s a collection of actions that either were previously taken or are currently being taken by democrats at the state level.
Many on the list are states that codified Roe a while ago - important to showing democratic majorities can do things and are fighting in this issue in places. A good retort to the people who think democrats consistently have failed us on this - they haven’t!
Others in the list are some creative ideas to show what Dems can do now (even at the federal level) to show that we can still fight this and Congress/Biden ought to pulling a variety of levers right now.

But they are pro-LIFE 🙄
And remember when "all lives mattered", but really that meant white, and blue
Why the assumption that the politician herself isn’t the one who had one?
Fair point, but I also feel that this isn’t information that should be shared.
That depends. I think for most politicians I agree whole heartedly. If it’s MTG or Palin, women who purposefully built their careers on denying this right to others, then I’m okay with it leaking.

I think the problem with this is the shaming that comes with this sort of outing is exactly what we don’t want to see. For instance, the rumors about Lauren Boebert largely didn’t result in people calling out her hypocrisy, but rather in the sex work and abortions themselves. The messaging comes from people who claim to be pro choice (as the right wingers don’t believe it anyway.)
I have a really big problem with this. I loathe Lauren Boebert and want her to go down, but I don’t think anyone should be outed for their abortions or which adults they consensually sleep with.
Now, this sort of leaking of private information can be effective as we saw with Madison Cawthorn. Frankly, I’m glad he’s out, but I really hate the way it went down. There was a lot of anti-LGBTQI messaging wrapped up in that - even from people who claim to be allies - and it did not make me feel triumphant.
I’m on pain meds, so I may not be framing this in the best way. I want these fuckers to go down in flames, but not wrapped up in the wrong messaging.
