I'm reading they're predicting up to 20 ft of storm surge. That's insane.
Yep. Hurricane Ike had a storm surge of 22 feet and completely flattened Bolivar Island. I don’t think it ever recovered. That was “only” a cat 2 storm. I can’t even think about the level of damage Florida is going to see. My stomach hurts just thinking about it.
I'm so worried for my friend. She and her bf just moved to Punta Gorda from the mid-Atlantic and have never been through a hurricane. Their house is right on the canal. Their plan was to hunker down but have the car packed if they need to get out...but where would they go at this point?
ETA: I see that their area is now under mandatory evacuation. I want to check in but also don't want to add to her stress
Quoting myself-- She is still at home. Jim Cantore is down the street AND the Waffle House closed, so shit is getting real. I'm so nervous.

Weather Channel reporter last night said that a hurricane making landfall is just automatically a billion-dollar disaster these days, and this is looking to be a minimum of $10 billion for cleanup, even before we know all the specifics.
The first time I ever went to the Florida Keys when I was a kid was 15 months after Hurricane Andrew. I couldn't believe there were still just swaths of devastation on our drive from Miami to Key Largo. I was a naive kid and that was the first experience I think I had where I actually got how long and hard it was to "fix" things that might not ever be able to be fixed anyway.

We live in Chicago but DH is a GC and is doing a building in Columbia, SC right now. He happens to be home in Chicago this week working on some different things so isn't there, but he's been on the phone all day yesterday and today making sure they are preparing. The building isn't enclosed yet and they have a ton of loose material on site. The trades are spending all day today and tomorrow morning getting everything secured, tied down, closed up wherever they can...and it's not even hurricane level there. DH has 7 coworkers on site from Florida, and all of them are still trying to work while also checking in on things at home.
My sister and her fiance also moved to Johns Island, SC from this area just last year and this will be their first experience with this much rain due to a hurricane. Annnnd....their wedding is in their backyard in 3 weeks, so they are stressing right now.
I'm sick just thinking about all the people in Florida that this will affect. Sending good thoughts to everyone there.
My parents live about 45 mins north of Orlando and I'm worried. Just talked to them and they are as prepared as they can be, but I don't think they've ever had a direct hit hurricane since they moved there. My dad says it's no big deal. I know it should weaken a bit by the time it gets to them since they are inland, but this thing is a monster.

They will be ok there!
I'm still concerned about flooding. My ILs just bought a home in the Villages last month. They'll only be snowbirds there so they aren't there right now but flooding can happen anywhere and I admittedly have been concerned ever since they told us the Villages just keeps adding and adding homes and it doesn't seem like that's a great idea for absorbing excess water.

My aunt & uncle live in Ft. Myers basically right on the beach. My aunt is extremely medically fragile and I don't know how feasible evacuating is for her. I'm worried about them.
I have extended family in Venice, Fl area that did not evacuate. Very worried right now. They are inland a ways but my one retired aunt is not too far from a river that flows into north Charlotte Harbor. Very concerned about flooding risk for her. I don’t understand why she didn't evacuate, it seems like such a risky and unnecessary choice.

My inlaws are also in Punta Gorda and staying. UGH! They stayed during Charlie almost 20 years ago and regretted it. This is supposed to be worse. WHY?!?!

Oh I hope they're okay! I don't get it either. I keep looking at the maps and the 18' storm surge predicted right over their house.
There might be a crew he can join. I can't remember which hurricane hit the keys most recently, but a bunch of electrical trucks were lined up at the border waiting for the all clear. They came in from around the country.
Those are linemen. He’s more the wiring in houses/businesses. He has a buddy who is a lineman who does the storm duty work though. It’s a different breed.

Those linemen don’t get NEARLY the credit they deserve!
I can only speak from my experience with an “Inland hurricane”/Derecho, but we gladly welcomed anyone with actual skills and an honest desire to roll up their sleeves, work hard, and help. Everyone here was SO TIRED, and seeing plates from all over gave us hope, made us feel seen, and took a little work off of our shoulders. Like others have said, send what he needs with him, then fill up extra space in his vehicle with things like bottled water, Gatorade, and cleaning supplies.
i have a family member who is a lineman and started driving down on Monday. so they typically will wait in a safe place and then as soon as the storm goes through, they'll essentially start following it. So once it's moved on from Tampa/Clearwater/Sanibel Island, they'll go there. And as it moves through, they'll continue to go behind it.
So, help is there and lined up, but there will be a lot of work to do obviously.

Omg:(you said it’s their first hurricane? Idk, maybe they just don’t get it? The amount of anger/rage I have felt towards my mom when she has refused to leave, followed by the fear and anxiety that comes after when I can’t get in touch with her is some of the worst emotional shit I’ve been through. I have yet to make sense of what drives people’s decisions.
This is me right now. For some stupid reason,my BFF decided to stay in sarasota. She lives on the water in siesta key and she "evacuated" to her dad's place 10 miles inland.
She has all the resources in the world at her hands to get the hell out but decided to stay. I am dumbfounded by this decision.
Just tried to pull these up and none of them seem to be working for me (it's 1:32pm EST on Wednsday 9-28 for future reference). That is not good.
Yeah, I was watching for awhile and seeing the water rise was crazy, but then they all went down.
I’ve been watching too. Thinking the power is down or it’s possible the water has washed some things away. Makes me sad - I’ve been going to Sanibel my whole life- first with my grandparents and now with my parents and my own kids. My grandfather never wanted to buy property down there bc “one big hurricane and everything will be gone.” Hoping there is somewhere to visit this spring and it’s not all washed away.

MH is flying into Ft. Lauderdale tonight and staying in Charleston tomorrow night.... unless things get cancelled. Right now it's all on time which seems absurd.

My parents are assuming both cars totaled. The boat may be gone as well. I've been hanging out with my dad the last few hours, walking around costco and scheels mostly, and he kept saying, well, since we'll be in the market for new cars... or boat (and accessories). For having just had his daughter's funeral service yesterday, he's holding up amazingly well.

Hugs to everyone affected by this storm, both directly and indirectly. It’s a beast.
My parents live in Nokomis, on a canal that connects to open water. Mom is currently away on vacation (supposedly coming home on Friday, flying into Tampa - ha!), but dad was still home and was refusing to leave until the very last second last night. My sister and I spent a while scrambling to find him the last hotel room in Boca Raton. I was absolutely furious with him for refusing to leave. He’s a 73 year old man with a chronically bad back, living in a single story house at sea level. If their house flooded he would have had to somehow magically hoist himself and their 60 pound dog onto the roof. Their house will almost certainly flood (thank goodness he left at least), and the center of the storm track goes directly over the school my dad still teaches at. It’s going to be really bad.

A family member is a retired linesman and he headed out To the maritime to help with the cleanup from Fiona last week and then said he will be going down to Florida right after. Bad times for coastal communities.

I have a lot of family in this area- they are inland and not on the water- and the worse they've gotten over the years is roof damage from wind. Hoping that stays true.
I'm actually feeling better about this hurricane for my family only because as of this year my grandma (turning 97) now lives with my aunt and uncle- prior to this she's gone through every storm alone in her own house.
