Pay their campaign debts so the candidate doesn’t end up on the hook with personal funds. Not the marker of an amazingly run campaign of course, but sometimes in the chaos of the election projected fundraising isn’t as strong in the end as it was when purchasing and contracting decisions were made.
In close elections those funds can also go to recounts.
Ooh, this is fascinating. I didn't realize they'd personally be on the hook. I assumed the party would be responsible, but I had no idea why I thought this.
It depends a little on the funding mechanism for the campaign and what state or whether it is congressional etc. Certainly in some cases the party covers outstanding debts but not always (and they usually do fundraising day of and after Election Day to fund that too.)

A few days ago I unfollowed every journalist, politician, activist, etc on Twitter as a mental health protection move. I was seeing so many dire predictions but then there were a couple of people giving me hope based on taking about youth turnout and partisan GOP polls being misleading and I couldn’t take it.
I know it’s probably better for me tonight but also OMG JUST TELL ME.
Another lurker- I’m Vegas based and weather today has been terrible for voting especially for the after work crowd- super windy and intermittent rain.
I’m trying to focus on the good, which is that some polling places have indoor lines, and we have a ton of them and can go to any of them, so fingers crossed it doesn’t keep people away. Voting Heller out was sooooooooo satisfying and I’m worried about our state backsliding.
MD polls closed at 8, and I keep hitting refresh on the "unoffical" results (through the state gov page) and NOTHING. Nothing is being reported yet and it's driving UP THE DAMN WALL

SAME! I’m at dinner with all the BOE candidates and the dem commissioner candidate, and everyone’s refreshing!

They just added the Early Voting results. I am so anxious about BOE. Right now BMW are leading but I hate them all with every fiber of my being. I'm hoping with today's results we'll flip.

EDIT: Jinx.
Apparently, BMW electioneers were trying to find out the volunteers for PTA who are teachers. Keeping a list of who they are.
It amazes me that every year the Republicans think it's a good idea to litter town illegally with their signs. The party of law and order until it doesn't suit them.
When I've had the energy, I didn't have the time and when I've had the time, I haven't had the energy but I have a longtime fantasy of gathering up all the campaign signs I find and leaving them at the front door of the respective candidates.
Bernadine, (gonna put discussion in this thread rather than the results thread). It seems that BMW is only leading by about 5,000 votes. I feel like with 80,000 counted, and that only being half the precincts, we have at least a shot at it flipping.
So the old folks pull the "we live on a fixed income" spiel but don't most working adults also live on a relatively fixed income? Unless you switch companies, most folks seem to get a paltry annual raise that rarely keeps up with increased cost of living. The cost of living increase for social security is going to be 8.7% next year which if someone came rolling in here saying "I got a 9% raise!" we'd be liking the hell out of that post. I'm not saying it's awesome for people who live on social security as their only income, but neither is getting a 2% raise and not being eligible for Medicare.

PA is like this too. I know they can’t show any results bc of the bullshit with the mail ins but GIVE ME SOMETHING.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I got a notice from our county dems, asking for blankets to be brought to campus for students waiting outside in line. Line was estimated to be FOUR HOURS. We have same day registration here, so some were registering, some were already registered and just voting.
Got some blankets together from my neighborhood/circle, threw snacks in the car, and headed over. By the time I got there (about 45 minutes later), they were thankfully all set in both locations, so I walked the line and gave out the snacks I brought (there was pizza and drinks too).
BUT.
THE.
LINE.
They were able to move people inside at my location and it truly wrapped around nearly the entire interior perimeter of the building. Students had brought their laptops, were doing homework, and were just camped out for the duration. They weren't going anywhere. I seriously almost started crying.
Gen Z showed up in FORCE in my pocket of the US today.

48/50 precincts in. Not good at all. I’m about to leave dinner so I can cry and scream fuck in my car the whole way home.

Just refreshed and saw and came in to tag you. FUCK. God damnit fuck this fucking county.
Bernadine, I was checking numbers for how many mail in votes were counted in 2020 (keeping in mind we were in the thick of covid) and looking at the primary numbers with how many mail in there were in the primary. I wouldn't say it's likely that it will flip with the mail ins counted, but I'm not giving up hope yet.
