I am so upset about this. Buddy is horrible. It is not looking good for the judges in NC either.
Looks like the election for Ohio Supreme Court will go straight GOP too. This is bad because while the court will stay 5-4 Republican, one of the Republican judges kept voting with the Dems on things like saying voting maps were illegally gerrymandered. She had to retire due to age, so and none of the Republicans likely to win are looking moderate, so the decisions are going to swing right on a lot of things (and the gerrymandered maps will now presumably be a-OK).
Dem Patty Murray and Dem Ron Wyden get re-elected to Senate.
This should not be huge for WA but it feels huge. Tiffany Smiley spent a TON of money. My students today (7th and 8th) were shocked when we compared platforms, because her ads said so very little about anything actual consequence.

Looks like the NC House will fall short on a supermajority though which is a tiny glimmer. I’m hoping that means we can sneak through that Medicaid expansion deal in Dec.
Based on some conversations I've heard, the general sense was "yes, let's support school kids, but is this the most effective way to do it?" (vs. having that money go to more teachers or other resources).
Anyway looks like there's a good chance it wins!
Honestly, I think this is an incredible way to support kids. As a school nurse, I see so many kids who come in for stomach aches because they didn’t eat in the morning or for lunch. There are a lot of parents who would qualify for free and reduced lunch who don’t/can’t do it for various reasons. I think this is a great way to keep kids in the classroom!
@@@
I voted for it! Just explaining a possible counter that isn't totally anti-student.
I actually thought it would fail by a lot. I am not low income but free meals were pretty life changing for us and I really hope they come back.

@@@ Hierarchy of needs. If children are hungry they cannot learn. It doesn't matter how much technology or fancy teaching strategies we throw at them. I'd also argue that this is supporting teachers because many teachers pay out of pocket to keep food in their classroom to provide for students with food insecurity.

Honestly everything seems to be going…not bad? R’s don’t seem to be flipping nearly quite as many seats as expected. No huge, exciting pick-ups for Dems either, but they seem to be holding on so far.

Kornacki says the decision desk model based on the current info is that the House will be 219 Republican +- 13 seats. In other words he says that it is right now just as likely the House goes Dem as GOP.
Lindsay Graham says that there is no red wave. That’s not super helpful if they still have the House or Senate, but it soothes my soul a little thinking the GOP is even a little unhappy.
Chuck Grassley was reelected in Iowa. He is 89 years old. He will be 95 when his term is over. What the heck?
Assuming he … lives that long. Not to be crass but my goodness.
I don’t think anyone actually expects him to live/work that long. It seems the general consensus was that he would run (& win…because “work ethic”), work for a little bit, then resign/leave office, and his son will take his place (I don’t know the process for that in Iowa, but if their last name is Grassley, they’ll skate right on through).
89 is ridiculous. The man HAS worked hard. He should have retired and enjoyed life.
Iowa is such an embarrassment. Our Governor is awful, and it looks like Ashley Hinson will return, since she’s a pretty, blond Christian who plays the violin…and name-calls and slings mid with the best of the Rs. Liz Mathis would have been fantastic.

Oh yes. They’re definitely playing it like a family dynasty circa 1950. I was just laughing a little at the back of the envelope math of him serving that full term! Such a frustrating state.
MN governor, SOS, AG all called or leaning Dem, thankfully. I think most districts voted the same as usual so I don't think there will be much change in our state legislature or national reps. Maybe I can sleep tonight now!
Great night for IL all around (or at least all the races near me). I know it always goes blue for president, but the state offices can swing, and the anti-Pritzker sentiment is high. Bailey was a horrific candidate, so no real surprise, but I’m relieved anyway.
MSNBC was saying this is one of the best-performing midterms for the sitting president ever, and the best since Clinton’s second midterms. I had forgotten we lost SIXTY seats in the first Obama midterm. I don’t feel like I could mentally handle that kind of a loss with today’s political climate.

This seems to be the general feeling that I’m getting, too. Even though things are still up in the air, the fact that they’re even still up in the air at this point feels like a huge victory, especially considering inflation and Biden’s approval numbers. It definitely makes me more optimistic about 2024.

Locally things seem to have gone well. Mayor when to our sane and calm candidate.
@@school board
Our elementary school board election turned pretty gross last month with lots of lbgt hate being spewed. 3 challengers to 3 sitting members were campaigning on “education not activism.” It seems as though they have lost. 1 is close enough that I’m not quite ready to call it yet. Our secondary school board has been equally messy lately and again it seems like a solid call for 2/3 of the seats. The 3rd seat is within 300 votes so it’ll be interesting how that swings.
Breathing easier locally. Seemingly doing ok nationally. Whew. I was worried.
It’s been heartening to see abortion rights defended in Kentucky and Michigan (literal tears!) And exit polls suggest abortion played a significant role in the Fetterman victory and helping Evers in Wisconsin.
It doesn’t help women in red states (yet) but I’m glad everyone is seeing that threatening abortion rights can galvanize voters in key swing states.
