We have gas heat but the system is very old and needs replacing. I’ve been considering a heat pump but heard some stories about them being “not sufficient” for very cold climates and was nervous. I feel like the info in this thread has been great and helped me realize it could work fine for us even though we have cold winters.
Heat pumps are defying Maine’s winters and oil industry pushback - wapo.st/3x7biIE
These articles tickle me a great deal. This one exposes just how hard the oil industry is trying to push out bad information.
I can't wait to move to Maine and get a heat pump. We also want a fireplace, so I'll have to research the best kind. Maybe a pellet stove? Maybe electric hooked up to something sustainable like solar?
New York has officially become the first U.S. state to ban gas stoves from new residential building construction. The law also bans furnaces and propane heating.
Under the new law, all-electric heating and cooking is required in new buildings shorter than seven stories by 2026, and in buildings taller than seven stories by 2029 — but is designed to largely impact residential buildings, with exceptions in place for commercial and industrial buildings such as restaurants and stores.
Oh hey! Since this has been revived - I still live in PA but we just got a heat pump installed this week. I'm SO impressed by the even temps upstairs now (my office/smallest bedroom had no heat or vents, so I've been using a stand-alone space heater and AC combo unit for the last 3 years). We've been told it will work to -5 F. We have a mini split in the living room too.

Do you have it zoned in the house and like other mini splits? I'm starting to think about going w/a heat pump when we do our next kitchen/1st floor reno. We need to replace our water heater too....so we could just stop using natural gas all together.

We don't, but our furnace wasn't zoned either. My in-laws have 2 mini splits, one in their great room and one in their bedroom, that are totally separate since they live in a split level and the rooms are pretty far away from each other anyway.
