As much as I liked this season, I doubt I will watch season two.
Not a fan of the second storyline/tone…
But, it was nice to watch a full story arc. Happens so rarely…. Half the time anymore, shows get cancelled before any resolution or go on to the point of boredom to me(looking at you Walking Dead/Blacklist/Lucifer).
I agree the Fireflys handled it terribly. If Ellie had been able to make a choice, speak with Joel about it, and say a proper goodbye perhaps things would have gone very differently. Just putting her under without her consent and without giving Joel a chance to have a conversation about it was such a poor choice.
Also why would they have to remove so much of her brain that it killed her? I know brain surgery is tough to do without harming the person, but it happens all the time when people have a tumor - why not just remove a very small piece of it and try to work with that first?

I thought the same thing at first, but then remember that they're not at a normal hospital under normal conditions. Maybe they knew they couldn't perform brain surgery the way they needed to in order for her to survive.
docholly - thank you! And so I guess whatever the thing is (I don't want to know what it is!) that game players are saying might make people so mad that they stop watching is in the second game.
The giraffe scene is taken straight from the video game and meant to give players (and viewers) some hope given the horrors of last episode and this one.

I liked the call back when he walked through the pediatric wing too. The animal murals… it can be easy for the viewer to forget she is still only 14 when it comes to the moral question of her life vs. the potential to create a cure.
I personally would have liked a little more deviation from the game because I loved what they added… Frank and Bill’s story, Joel’s emotional conversation with Tommy, the reveal about his suicide attempt, etc., but lord, the comments from so many gamers on Reddit… they wanted a 1 to 1 recreation… which it nearly was!
For the show only viewers, I think they could have done more and expanded it by an episode or two.
The whole thing takes almost a year which isn’t shown as well in the show.
This can create some disconnect like how he is all the sudden so chatty and fatherly, but it has been some months since David (winter chapter) to the hospital (spring chapter).

I actually think do a fairly decent job of conveying the passage of time. The weather is different, etc.
This episode did feel rushed to me, but it’s likely partially because I’m sad it’s over. I think they could easily have done a 10th episode.
Also, the casting of Ellie’s mom was SO good. For a hot minute I thought she was future Ellie, and I was like daaaamn who knocked her up?! 😂
Yes, same! She looks so much like Ellie. I guess our Ellie is based on the game Ellie who may have been based on the way this actress looks... But it was crazy how similar they look.
The actress who played Ellie in the game and Ellie's mom in the show - her face hasn't changed since she played Mel Gibson's daughter in What Women Want. It's crazy how she looks exactly the same lol

And she was Chrissy Seaver on Growing Pains!! (Am I dating myself!?). When i saw her last name was Johnson, I thought she had to be Dakota Johnson’s sister bc that’s who she reminded me of too, but nope.

lol yeah and that girl that bullied DJ on Roseanne

Has Abby been cast yet?
I preferred the second game, honestly. The complexity of the emotions I felt still sticks with me.

Not that I have heard…!
I think it is really poignant thematically. Both games really make you think.

the minute I saw her I was like "woah, this is the girl from what woman want!" and then I imdb'd her because she looks so young and I was curious who this young woman is that has not changed at all...she is older than me! lol. (just barely)

She's always Chrissy Seaver first to me so we can be old together.

I think it's less about the amount of brain matter needed and more about removing the trigger that keeps the cordyceps from advancing. If they take out that part, the cordyceps take over her body like anyone else.

I’m definitely old enough that I recognized her immediately as Chrissy. She really hasn’t changed at all since she was little.

That’s why she looked so familiar! I couldn’t figure it out last night and was too tired to go through her whole IMDb page so I missed her playing Chrissy!

I wanted so badly for Joel to say “i saw this in a movie once” when he got the branch to attract the giraffe in petting distance. It was so reminiscent of 1993 Jurassic Park 😎
Listening to the podcast and they said when they tested the game, players were 50/50 on whether Joel did the right thing at the end there, except if the player was a parent and then 100% of parent game testers said Joel did the right thing.
That makes sense why I wasn't upset at all by all the violence Joel was doing in that scene. I should poll my stepdaughters and see what they think.

I have come a little more to understand the other side of the argument after rewatching the scene with Marlene in the parking garage and seeing that he did believe Ellie would make the choice to sacrifice herself. Which I thought they related better in the series…
It’s clear that he would have saved her no matter what… even if he knew 100 percent that the “cure” would work and even if he knew it is what she would have wanted (although with PTSD and her being a child, her ability to make that choice in that state is not there for me).
I get the whole argument of sacrificing one to save thousands, but people tend to only agree with that if it isn’t their loved one/them being asked to sacrifice… and no one asked Ellie.
Joel was always going to make that choice because it was the parent’s choice and he already lost Sarah to a solider killing her for the “greater good.” He wasn’t going to let it happen twice.
I liked the music/his blank face in that hospital scene and that call back to carry Ellie like he carried Sarah. Any other decision wouldn’t have been in character for him considering his attachment to her and his defining experience. The story opens and closes with the same scenario… It’s who he is. As bill said, “That’s why men like you and me are here. And God help any motherfuckers who stand in our way.”🤣

Makes sense to me. My husband's exact words to me were, "Oh...Joel is going to have to kill all of them."

Yeah even in the parking garage, the podcast were talking about a possibility where Joel didn't kill Marlene and I was shaking my head like Nope sorry, she's gotta go.
Man I guess I never thought about being a parent can make you brutal! 🤣
