They all committed crimes, and if they knowingly did it or not won't help them.
But I wonder if they all would have committed the crimes if they had believed it was a crime.
I can absolutely believe this (the not believing they were crimes), but that is the basically the whole point of why electing Trump and his merry band of morons is such a bad idea from the start. These people are not highly intelligent and in addition to being not quite bright, they lack moral compass and critical thinking skills. Most people's radar would be pinging when stuff like this is suggested, even if not positive that it rises to the level of actual criminal activity, knowing it's not quite right and can't *really* be allowed. People with legitimate experience, those who are actually interested in governing...even if their ideologies are crappy, they know what it legal and illegal and what envelopes can be pushed and how far. There are seemingly a small number of that brand of "bad" GOP'ers left, IMO, and they keep trying to fill their ranks with the outrageous, Trumpian-level of miscreants. Who will keep getting into this shit. Notice how Mitch McConnell isn't part of this, right? He's THE WORST, but he isn't stupid.
I don’t want this to come across as defending the merry band (they are completely guilty in my eyes), but I do wonder about the balance of power. Like, the POTUS said this is ok, who am I to question? The just following orders defense (that I would need to research more about to know how often it works to get people off).
Now, clearly, a deranged POTUS with minions willing to do ANYTHING to be in his favor muddies the waters vs a straight military command where quitting on the spot is not really an option.

Even if you don’t think, know or believe you’re breaking the law…does not mean you can’t be charged (and potentially) convicted of doing so.
Regardless of whether it’s a stranger, friend, family member, the president, etc that is telling you what to do.
It’s not a defense that should hold. Nobody SHOULD be above the law. Period.
