This is not an opportunity for jokes or celebration. Political violence is terrifying, and there is literally no upside to this except for those who revel in the chaos and subsequent violence that can easily follow an event like this. And in case you're especially stupid, STFU and remember that this is a public fucking forum.
My husband made a good point that the Magats are now very likely to target Biden, and any other democrat, “to get even.” It’s an incredibly dangerous time for Ds right now.

I don’t see anyone celebrating. I think everyone is aware of just how dire this situation is.

Well, I made a joke, which was uncouth, but I’m still aware of the likely chaos and violence that may stem from this.

All of the comments about this being some kind of a Trump-planned conspiracy? That kind of jump-to-conclusions conspiracy thinking is reading awfully gleeful to me. Regardless, this is not a moment for people to be acting foolish.
I’m not celebrating, but I will not act like they haven’t been talking about violence and civil unrest for years, laughing and making up wild bullshit stories when Nancy Pelosi’s husband was attacked, when protesters are attacked, when well known dem supporters have suffered tragedies of their own. No. You don’t get to create all this evil and now wash your hands.

I think when you’re dealing with someone who has sowed violence and hatred at every turn, you’re naturally going to have people who are skeptical initially. I don’t think anyone (here) is still doubting that this is real.

There's skepticism and then there's arguing that Trump must have orchestrated this himself. If this is actually a board where we care about facts instead of social media garbage then people need to use their damn brains before they post.
This fucking asshole has been inciting violence for the last 6 years. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Yep. I’m not gleeful — we are watching the slow-motion death of a republic — but I’m not sympathetic to someone facing a consequence of his own choices for the last nine years.
This motherfucker is on CNN talking about how the rhetoric around Trump being a dictator and democracy being at risk is what caused this. And literally said where is the political violence coming from? Like excuse me?!?! Fuck them, fuck Trump!

Yes, this whole turn of events, whoever did it, whatever the motivations, how it will ignite/energize people, it's all really really bad for the country as a whole, when we were already in a really shitty and precarious position. I can't even begin to fathom how this will play out only to say that it won't be good and will make him (more of) a martyr.

So it's not worth condemning that someone took a shot at him and killed a bystander? Like really, let's stop and think for a minute because this rationale leads to an awfully slippery slope. I hate Trump with a fury, and I hope he burns in hell, but I do not applaud or even shrug off an assassination attempt because of what he has done. If you want a better America we all need to be a whole lot better and consistently act that way.

The video of him being taken off stage and you see the crowd starting to stand up and their instinct is to start chanting "USA" while pumping fists in the air just made me nauseous.

I kind of assumed this actually wasn’t an attempt to shoot or kill Trump. I just assumed it was another day in America with an event where someone got shot :/
This whole time I assumed the shooter was at the rally but an NYT update says the shooter was somewhere “elevated” outside of the rally.
I saw a guy interviewed who attended say he and people around him saw the guy climbing the roof of a nearby building or barn and that he had a rifle and that minutes before the shooting when they saw this they alerted cops about it and that the response was slow, confused, and unorganized.

Yes on a roof. There are pictures on Twitter of the shooter dead. He is literally on a roof not that far away from the rally. This is such a huge security failure.

I was certainly not gleeful at any point in any of my responses, including my particular hyperbolic comment that is catching fire. I am certainly not gleeful that he was hurt nor that anyone else was. I was actually scared.
I believe there were oddities in the immediate response from both USSS and who I assume is SRT. I will wait on determination of distance before I question failures of inner/outer cordons and I won’t discuss those thoughts here as requested.
I am sorry I flippantly said I jumped on the conspiracy train. At that time I thought it was a sim round that didn’t continue trajectory based on his physical reaction and his wound. I’ve been hit by one and had a very similar reaction/wound on an extremity.
As a veteran's spouse and someone who's been trained on OPSEC I hope you're being careful about your public posts. Lots of law enforcement are going to be combing through digital chatter. Be careful with yourself.

I condemn guns. I condemn people using guns to deliberately harm other people when they aren’t defending themselves or someone else in a situation where it’s clear the other person intends to do harm themself. I think this situation we are in is incredibly dangerous and I am scared what it means for our democracy and for the people who live here, especially those who are marginalized.
But we also need to remember that it is the people who were at this rally and the person who was speaking there who have created this situation. I think this shooter was deeply misguided and should not have done what they did today. But also fuck the people who have embraced this would-be-dictator for the past eight years. We are here because they have put us here. I am sorry someone lost their life today and for the people who loved that person, but I won’t pretend that I can even begin to empathize with their presence at what is essentially a hate rally.

So guns are bad, but also this person deserves no sympathy when they died from gun violence due to their presence at a Trump rally?
I'm out. Gun violence is never okay. People dying from gun violence is never okay. I'm not going to engage in conversation with people who are willing to make, "but, and" arguments on this point.

I'm just so freaking sick, mad, and angry at what this man has done to our country. How we are all reacting. How we feel like we have to wish a speed recovery to a rapist. Trying to find grace when this man has ripped apart families, incited violence, enabled all sorts of terrible things, and I'm just grieving for what he's done to all of us & exposed our own cruelties. The psychological burden is a lot to unpack at the moment.
Do we want a separate thread as we watch their base get fired up? I was also noticing the lack of T 2024 signs compared to 2020, but I have a sinking feeling they will be everywhere around here very soon.
I will avoid public places and be very careful with road rage. Too many people will be carrying even more than usual.
Pittsburgh news confirmed Trump departed Pittsburgh in the last hour. There are also 2 rally attendees in the hospital in critical condition (in addition the the deceased). That was the first confirmation I saw about 2 being shot.
